    I remember visiting Alien War in London in the early 1990's. Many original props such as the smaller scale dropship and APC where there to be seen - and touched ! If I recall there was also the Gateway matte painting on display and parts of the full size alien queen puppet. No glass cases, so barriers, all out in the open. Crazy.

    • @glyph2011
      @glyph2011 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yup, I went there too and couldn’t believe the amount of props on show. I photographed them all from various angles..goodness knows what happened to them though.

    • @davidanderson1639
      @davidanderson1639 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I actually got to go behind the scenes of Alien War & the stuff they didn’t have on display was amazing. They had a Smart Gun & harness, Dietrich’s armour & various pieces from the production.
      The walls / corridor detailing of Alien War were cast from the original sets of Hadley’s Hope, as well as some of the bits of set from the Nostromo that had survived (mainly the more industrial parts).
      But one of the stand out props they had acquired was a pair of Art Deco style Greyhound statues, that were from a deleted & long since lost scene from Alien 3, which took place in the library on Fury 161. This scene, I think was a left over from Vincent Ward’s original concept.

    It’s interesting to note that the Dropship model doubled for both the craft seen in Aliens.
    This is similar to what they did with Sulaco & the rescue ship seen in Alien 3. During production, Sulaco was borrowed from Bob Burns & restored, for the filming of the opening sequence; although they did something very clever. Which was to write Sulaco backwards & then film it in a mirror as it needed to go through the shot in the opposite direction.
    Then on the other side of the model, the name was removed, in order to film the sequence for the rescue vessel.

      It's one of my fav sci-fi ships because it looks credible. It's the sort of design you would expect from the military. No soft, curvy lines, but practical, modular, hard edge, reliable systems and sensors. It's got the best of the Apache, Harrier and Hercules in terms of military grade.

    Robert and Dennis Skotak are, it's safe to say, legendary visual effects artists. If you think this is amazing, take another look at the original "Terminator" (1984). It had a fraction of the budget of "Alens," but their talent and experience pulled off amazing miniature shots that still hold up today. They are proof that it's not the cameras, the film, the lighting, or the budget that creates amazing images. It's the mind and skill of the creators.

    All this rich history of modelmaking lost to someone's home! These classic models should be in a museum of sci-fi and movie-making for future generations to enjoy!

    • @Thomas_Esson
      @Thomas_Esson 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Nothing's being "lost" in this case; it wouldn't have survived if not for the private homes it's been in all this time. And it may very well go on loan to a museum - quite a few collectors do that. But it's hard to expect everyone who's saved, cared for, and put time and money into restoring this stuff to just donate it.
      If the few museums that collect this material receive sufficient support from benefactors and from an enthusiastic visiting public, then they can acquire some of this material - the same as art museums do. Unfortunately, at this point in time, the average person who accepts the value of art museums still views props and costumes with near-complete indifference. Hopefully that will improve in time, but it's been a slow road.

      Sometimes a museum will be loaned pieces for a showing. Admittedly not always, not often, not everywhere, and not for long. If we want well-stocked museums, we need well-funded museums, and that requires a lot of hard civic participation. Additionally, when a culture has great wealth inequality, tons of rich nerds outbid institutions. So in a "frog and scorpion" way, it's the fault of the rich, but in a palpable way it's the fault of the citizenry.

  • @Paperfiasco
    @Paperfiasco 2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I know a lot of people are asking why not hand these to a museum, a lot of these seem to be coming from private hands already - and let’s be honest, they want a possible return on an investment here. Plenty other private hands are probably willing to pay more than what a museum is likely to pay for some of these pieces, no matter how treasured they might be to people like us or Adam.

    The one thing that bothered me was enlisted flying spacecraft/aircraft. In the current military(s), officers are aviators and enlisted are allowed as cargo-masters and mechanics. This could represent a good change as my Dad was a licensed pilot, but was enlisted in the Air Force. There is nothing wrong with enlisted as aviators, but I need to let this go as this is a film that represents a possible future for the Earth.

    These videos have been brilliant. Did you shoot all these smaller videos back to back - I'm enjoying the fact that you have to express your gratitude and your welcomes as if you haven't just done the same thing repeatedly over and over during a day.

    It reminds me of an A10 warthog. I wonder whether the original model 'borrowed' any parts from an A10 model kit.

    Love the first 3 Alien movies. yes, even the theatrical cut of Alien 3. The movies are so nostalgic to me. Was born in 75 so I grew up with the movies. Always remember Alien War at the Trocadero in London, which is now sadly a distant memory. Alien war if I recall had some of the original movie props on show and I remember a full replica of the Alien Queen in the Virgin music store in Tottenham court road around that time. If I recall in late 90s, early 00s. I so wish I could afford an original prop as all I have is a face hugger from the AVP game collectable pack and a MacFarlane avp figures

    Another amazing iconic movie prop. I was lucky enough to visit propstore not so long back where we 3d scanned a number of props including I beleive Stevens own Tie fighter maquette.... then last month I visited FBFX where I beleive you will be visiting again soon. Absolutely love this stuff.... I just need to earn more to be able to afford a piece for myself!

    There must be some crazy wealthy Aliens collectors out there...The dropship went fo £125,000; The M41A1 Pulse rifle for £112,500 and two of the uniforms went for £87,500 ("Apone") and £175,000 ("Hudson") ... It is mental that some people have so much money to spend on movie memorabilia ...

    The very thing that made me become an airline pilot! 👨‍✈️✈️ Actually I wanted to fly dropships into combat but the military wouldnt take me because of my eye sight. Oh well. Took the civilian route and here I am! Ironically we fly military contracts lol.

    Can we talk about the display in the background though? I see different iterations of Michael Myers' mask, Jason's masks and machete, Freddy Krueger's claws, a Venom mask, Pinhead, Chucky, how cool is that?
