How to make a coconut leaf hat is in two parts and will teach you all you will ever need to know to make these highly functional and great looking hats. You could probably adapt the weave a little to make them from willow if you got inventive and did not have palms in your area.

That looked painfully difficult to explain David and absolute top marks for giving it a damned good go. I think I followed it and am looking forward to part two. I would imagine this is the birth of hat making to keep sun out of workers eyes and it probably has equivalents in straw and other materials. The palm version looks awesome. These are great to protect you from the sun. Just wait until they have turned braun and they work well. When they are green they still heat up a bit. Good question!

One hour is all it takes. With some practice. First one took 3 hours though :)

The one in coconut leaves is unique. We used to play with their leaves making toys but nothing know off anything useful like this . The palm tree leaves hat are on still been used here

Can anyone tell me if they have the same issue? No matter what I do, I can't get the hole on the top to close up like he does in the video. I've worked it every which way and the smallest that I can get the hole is 1.5 inches across. I've tried hats using the frond formula 3-8-7, 3-8-8, 3-8-7, and 3-6-7 (if you watch the second videos, you'll know what I'm talking about). Any suggestions?
Before starting to weave, just apply low heat the front in a wooden fire. This will give flexibility to the spine and durability to the product. It will last for one year without any damage if you heat the front. Traditional baskets with coconut fronts were made in Kerala after little heating of the front.
