      Hi, My first hard drive on a PC was a XT class and i bought a used 10meg, it had everything on it, dos, nortons, xtree, pascal, word perfect, multiplan, and only @ 300 at the time mid 80's
      The 90's was a year of ide and rattlers 400meg to 2gig, i still have 2 x connors 420meg drives that still work, everything else from that era is dead.
      I have 2 toshiba laptops from XP era and in 2020 bought new old stock 60+80G 44 pin drives for them of ebay @ $30 each - i am so happy as i tri3ed to use the ide to Compact Flash adapters with no success

      @JaapGinder 3 ปีที่แล้ว +12

      Well, dead means dead. The drives are not working at all, it seems. Maybe the one with 'No boot sector' could containg something.

    • @Reziac
      @Reziac 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      First they have to spin up and speak to the host system. If they won't spin up (and they were doing the dead actuator click of death) and are not recognized AS a drive by the system, you can't use software to recover the data. You could rebuild the mechanical parts (chances are the data on the disk itself is intact) which is what professional data recovery would do, but if it's the logic board, it needs to be an exact match (sometimes even the same batch).

  • @itskdog

    That first drive that was showing as unallocated could just have a corrupt partition table. Try using testdisk to recover the partitions if they're readable. An old USB HDD of mine did that a few times but I was able to use testdisk to recover the partition table so I could at least copy the files off.

  • @1980sGamer

    4:40. They also have an eBay store and yes, their prices are absolutely ridiculous. Every time I saw an old laptop on eBay with a price like that, I'd always know it was from recycledgoods. Craziest thing is that they're a recycling company so it makes the prices they ask even more ridiculous.

    I'm reminded of the older USB HDDs we had back then. Ever since my dad learned that USB enclosures were a thing, he turned every working HDD we had from unused/broken PCs into USB HDDs. Most were desktop HDDs, so we had these huge clunky things that each used a USB B cable _and_ its own power adapter. Lol. It was cheaper than the actual ext. HDDs back then. Flash drives weren't as cheap as they are now and offered too little space for our backups. Younger me would've loved my affordable (and faster) pocket-size 2TB HDD.

    • @PFMediaServices
      @PFMediaServices ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Clunky but effective! This is the kind of solution I still use to this day, though no longer due to price but on account of I've got a buttload of perfectly functional HDDs so why would I possibly NEED to buy more? 😝🍍

    KDS stands for Korea Data Systems and they OEMd a lot of equipment I believe back to 1990. The Gateway 2000 Crystalscan 1024ni was made by KDS. It is my understanding that they went on to become Princeton Graphics and Mag Innovision sometime later. I also think, (but am not sure), that the CEO of that company went on to financial ruin, only to come back and start Vizio.

I found a few with Windows XP installed, Windows 7 (which couldn't even boot), and one with Windows 2000 straight from an office workstation. I tested them on a HP Omnibook 6000 (the only computer I could find that natively supports the 44-pin IDE interface). Many were Hitachi, IBM Travelstar, and some others.

    For the Latitude D610, you can get a D-Bay to IDE adapter for like 10 bucks off parts-people, and you can do these tests much fasters without touching any screws, and it can both be detected under Windows or be booted directly.
    Also, next time you probably should've gave away the hard drive caddy when you give away an old laptop, finding the hard drive caddy for the really old laptops are quite hard and those older Latitudes absolutely need the caddy's internal adapter (ribbon cable) for the hard drive to work on them

    The Latitudes at that time were amazing machines. I have a D-810 and a D-630 and both of them still have fully functional batteries.

      Until you got a D630 or D830 with a Nvidia GPU, then they're garbage.
      Anything Nvidia until Fermi/Kepler was garbage, reliablity wise. And even then Big Fermi (GF110 Quadros in Precisions/EliteBooks) was pretty eh
