Mutable Instruments Clouds as a Lo-fi Tape Delay

  • Demonstration of Mutable Instruments Clouds Texture Synthesizer as a Lo-fi Tape Delay. Lovely warble and disintegration on the repeats. Reverb, filtering and diffusion for tone and texture control.
    Note: works best on the Parasite Firmware pre-V2.0. To access the delay, it is the third mode known as Looping Delay. The quality setting should be set to one of the 8-bit modes. Position sets delay time. Texture is a multimode filter. Density adds diffusion, I personally like it at 0. Size has no effect unless the buffer is frozen.
    Video starts with a simple monophonic sawtooth arp sequence from the Novation Peak. I slowly bring in the wet signal with the Blend control. I also bring up the feedback and reverb with the Blend control. There is a sweet spot for feedback. Too much feedback and things get out of control. Near the end, I take the incoming signal out and just let the repeats feedback into themselves before freezing the buffer and playing with that for a bit.

    Well look what popped up in my TH-cam feed. Nice to revisit this, lovely stuff as always. Now that I’m in the Clouds cult I’ll have to try this “tape delay” patch.

    Clouds does indeed have a great and rather distinctive sound. Unfortunately though, every synth i hear processed through it sounds somewhat similar at the output stage.... It's creating a degree of mundanity within recent 'ambient' audio excursions.

    Amazing demo. Helped me discover completely new sonic capabilities with my clouds! Quick question - do you use the pitch knob at all in looping delay mode? I generally don't like the sounds I'm getting when I do but I saw a demo you did with light bath and it looks like you do there. Maybe that was granular mode though

    • @rbeny
      @rbeny  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      the only time I use the pitch knob in looping delay mode is with the buffer frozen. the pitch shifting with the delay buffer still open can sound a little funky, but sounds great once a loop is frozen. I do use the pitch knob with an active buffer in the granular, time stretching, and spectral modes though.

    Amazing sounds!! As always! Whats the difference between stock looping delay and parasites? Got a used uClouds with stock fw but can't get anyone to install parasites because the u things doesn't respond great to the audio file update :/

    • @rbeny
      @rbeny  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      there's only a few small differences on the looping delay btwn firmwares. mainly clocking/timing stuff. that's a bummer the audio file update doesn't work great. maybe someone can update it with a programmer? for the record, i recommend the parasites over the stock firmware all the way, even for beginners.

    Thanks for sharing... What is the difference between the pre v2.0 firmware and post?

    • @rbeny
      @rbeny  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      There was some slight noise affecting Position which creates the warble. 2.0 "fixed" that. You can recreate it by patching it yourself.

    • @kriskeyser6691
      @kriskeyser6691 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      can I ask how one would patch that warble back in? what other modules would you need in order to add that warble to a sound?

    • @rbeny
      @rbeny  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You would need noise, a VCA and a filter. It would have to be very very subtle.

  • @studio48nl

    Why does it works best on parasites pre-2.0? You mean on older parasites firmware versions?
    Edit: Ah, less 'warbles'. You mention it othe comments. One can introduce the wobbly thing by adding fluctuations to the position 👍🏼

    • @rbeny
      @rbeny  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      specifically less warbles in the feedback path. patching fluctuations to position certainly helps as well!

  • @saren6538
    @saren6538 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Brilliant what firmware has this lofi ?

    • @rbeny
      @rbeny  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      all firmwares will have the lofi setting (see audio quality settings in the manual). the parasites firmware slightly changes the way the looping delay works. it slightly lets noise affect the pitch, so you get these nice pitch warbles on the feedback. from my understanding, this was by mistake, so the current parasites firmware no longer has this.

  • @toddtrulock6809
    @toddtrulock6809 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    can the delay be synced by CV?

    • @rbeny
      @rbeny  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I believe it can, but with the Parasites firmware only (don't see it documented on the official manual)
      "When a clock is sent to the Trig input, the Position knob becomes a clock divider/multiplier for the pre-delay: at 12 o'clock, the pre-delay takes the value of the clock length; clockwise, this clock is divided, and counter-clockwise it is multiplied following the rates: 1/16, 3/32, 1/8, 3/16, 1/4, 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, 1, 3/2, 2/1, 3/1, 4/1, 6/1, 8/1, 12/1 (borrowed from the Echophon). Note that the clock division is limited to the largest division not exceeding the maximum delay; beyond this point, the Position knob will have no effect. Note also that clock synchronization will be more accurate with the Size knob fully counter-clockwise."

  • @Obiwaz

    Why pre 2.0?

    • @rbeny
      @rbeny  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      in the previous versions, there was a "bug" where noise from the power supply would affect the pitch slightly. I found this "bug" to be pretty pleasing, slight pitch warbles on every decay
