I must admit wanting to do this too. Also I wanted to watch walking video from every country. I will definately let myself be inspired by this channel. I admire your skill in reading
Do you watch Futurama? The episode where Bender (a robot) gets the update to be compatible with a new kind of robot. He goes through and "rejects" the system, first living a simple life, then returning to New New York to liberate the rest of the world from "new" technology In short, he has to utilize the new robot to save his friends from the chaos he starts and as he does so he snaps out of that reality only to find that he has finished getting the update. He leaves questioning his reality but ultimately takes his update in stride. My point, is that the western trope of fighting the system seems to me to frequently result in a personal change relative to the system and rarely changes the system itself.
This was such a good list! I read all of these in my Japanese literature classes and they are fantastic to really get into reading more Japanese authors.
Obviously I've listened extremely carefully and your journey in Japan's literature has been really very amazing and interesting. It has been long and not so easy to translate everything in the best way, but it also has been an honour for me. Thank you very much.
Hi MattI have just listened to the Japanese books on your journey around the world-Love your quick reviews and insights -and have listed all 4 on your books to read when we return to Japan in (hopefully ) January .Thanks heaps as I look forward to hearing about your choices from other countries .As for Australian books-perhaps my favourite contemporary author is Tim Winton -Many books are great read but Dirt Music and Breathe are right up there ,in my opinion.CheersMike from Brisbane
Thanks for the valuable information, I really appreciate it! This might be unrelated, but since you are interested in Japanese literature, I figured you'd appreciate a particular genre of music that Japanese stood out in the 70s and 80s called fusion jazz. Here are my favorite artists: -Casiopea (Mint jams) -Jiro Inagaki & His Soul Media(Funky stuff) -Masayoshi Takanaka (all of me) I hope you like them! I want to start reading your recommended novels, but I'm a beginner. How should I begin? since I have seen that these can be very complex or difficult to digest. Thank you for everything this has been my favorite channel.
I wish I could borrow from your library! I too, read about other cultures, other countries- how else to become truly "human", educated to me meant travel but I never had the money....we are lucky to have access to books- I haven't read many Japanese authors, I haven't much money and the library doesn't always have the budget for the books one would wish for. The writer on my shelf committed suicide- was there a writer named, Mishima- ? I can't remember any titles! Interesting talk. Thank you. Namaste from Canada
I read Akutagawa's Rashomon stories, and a good few besides. I found them mostly dull. I liked Haruki Murakami's after the quake (published in 2000), especially the first story, 'UFO In Kushiro'.
This was so intriguing!! I've been wanting to read more Japanese literature, and these recommendations sound great :) You might like the channel Expedition Through the Pages, she's also trying to read books from every country :)
hi i am from india.. G20 is being organized in my college in which i get to represent japan To tell about one of the famous writers or poets of Japan Please tell me a short story in English by any famous writer.I only know two languages, one English and one Hindi. If you help me, I will represent Japan well in India, which will make your country famous.
Sorry, but Convenience Store Woman isn't fit to be mentioned in the same group as those other 3 classic stories. It's like putting a Ford Focus with a Ferrari, Lotus and Lamborgini.
Please send me your suggestions, novels or short stories that are poular in your country. I am coming your way. Thank you.
Honoured, love to
INSHALLAH

Glad you like them! i will check your suggestions from Australia. Agains really appreciate it.
Convenience Store Woman was in a way lucky to recognize and accept/embrace her role in the world. Many of us never really manage to work that out.
Thanks for the valuable information, I really appreciate it!

I'd like to listen to you, but the connection is very slow and the video freezes after each four or five seconds, so maddening 👿👿
I’m sorry to hear you’re having difficulty. The video plays fine for me. I don’t know what’s going on with TH-cam on your end.
