"The Heiress," which is the amazing film adaptation of the Henry James novel Washington Square, earned Copland an Academy Award. A highly recommended film. Sir Ralph Richardson is the biggest possible ham in it.
Hi Dave, never thought I'd be into Copland's works. Got that trilogy of CDs by Slatkin & St.Louis SO with the Symphonies and "Music for a Great City". Wonderful stuff. Best regards. Ignacio.
Dear Dave ! I would like to congratulate you for reaching 50 000 subscribers today !!🎉 I hope you will do a celebration video on an interesting topic. 😊
I think Copland is seriously undersold! Not film music for sure, but I remember as an undergraduate being prostrate in my college rooms with bad 'flu hearing _Quiet City_ for the first time (on LP, as we called vinyl back then!). Talk about being transported. Sticks in my mind 40+ years later. Oh, and the particular CD Dave is talking about: it's sell-your-grandma worth it.
There exists on paper acetates but still listenable the actual Copland opening to The Heiress which Wyler changed to put that sappy Plaisir d’Amore in the middle much to Copland’s anger Coplands original is much more let’s say impressionistic sounding. Copland got the Oscar for the Heiress - a great film better than the book
I wish there were room in today's opera world for a revival of Pasatieri's opera on the subject, Washington Square. It's not bad at all and a real opportunity for a singing actress.
Glad to agree with you on Copland, Slatkin and Steinbeck.

It's hard to go wrong with the ever dependable Leonard Slatkin. He still maintains a busy international schedule.
You skated quickly over The Heiress, which won three Oscars, including one to Aaron Copland for Best Score.
Copland's John Henry is a great musical impression of a locomotive.

I have it and I love it! Especially the music for Our Town. Have you done a video on his clarinet concerto?
