There’s millions of business owners with more employees than Sam Harris, and they provide significantly more value to the world than this pathetic authoritarian you defend.
This reminds me of Hannah Arendt’s concept of atomization and how it leads to totalitarianism. People need to act in the world and be judged on that action in order to develop their own self concept. If people lose their ability to be recognized for their actions, they become “atomized”. People then seek out groups of like minded people and they conform to that group, because they don’t want to lose that connection. Those groups coalesce to form political entities and you get totalitarian regimes. That can easily be seen as people desperately seeking status groups and subordinating their reason in order to belong to a status group. I think this is definitely playing a major role in our current cultural issues.
@@joenunez3800 It is a bit reductive, but I don't see why that makes it untrue. I will use an example to illustrate. I'm going to assume Storr's spheres of status (SOS) to be equivalent to Arendt's "space for action", as they are both areas in life where you are judged by your peers. Say we have an Amazon employee. At work he is required to select items from shelves with robotic efficiency. There is no SOS in this workplace, as you are judged solely based on a timer. If you select your products with 10 seconds to spare, you don't gain status, you just move onto the next item. You can only lose status by failing to meet your time quota. This employee makes $15 per hour, therefore they are forced to work a second job in order to survive. Let's say they drive for Uber. Uber has a slight SOS, as you receive stars to reflect your status as a good driver, but I wouldn't exactly consider that a social environment. With all of this time dedicated to working, our employee will likely have to dedicate their remaining time to one of family, friends or extracurricular activities, therefore they have lost another two SOS. I don't think this situation would be an outlier in present day America. Arendt would suggest that this person is more likely to find themselves part of a group where your social status is based on how strictly you adhere to the group's dogma. The Nazis or the Bolsheviks in Arendt's time, MAGA or BLM in today's world. This employee finds themselves aligning with a lot of what Trump has to say, and the more they agree with Trump, the higher their status in the MAGA SOS. Then you throw in lockdowns which make the MAGA group one of the only SOS in this employee's life. Arendt believed this person would desperately adhere to the dogma of the group for fear of losing one of their few remaining SOS. That is how you end up with good, honest, intellegent people going along with wild ideologies. That seems pretty straight forward to me. I can see that it is somewhat reductive, and I would never suggest that this is the only factor impacting our social problems, but I don't see why it wouldn't play a significant role. If you see a glaring hole in this logic, please explain, because I am always trying to improve my understanding of the world.
@@sebastianhelm1718 I appreciate your observations of how it appears disjointed, and I’m not arrogant enough to presume its absolute relevance to all matters of particularity. So thank you. Insofar as making sense, I’ve found that pragmatism as a method of inquiry into understanding how meaning is derived from both empiricist and rationalist paradigms, depending upon its practical consequence, is helpful to me as I engage in a spirit of hermeneutics with the influential thinkers, such as Arendt. What forms the basis of her truth? Of the truths that become reoriented, sedimented, or indexed from the discursive archive, or genealogy of knowledge that becomes disciplinized? What, in turn gets subjugated as a result? As someone who is on his own journey to self-discovery, I find myself asking how current tensions, and the frictions thereof, might be understood as a heuristic device that helps to reveal the pluralities of existence that form the basis of, perhaps incommensurably so, human beliefs and, in turn, human actions. Again, thank you for asking. If you know of anything that might contribute to a fledgling intellect like mine, please do share. Be well
I have a small ego. Almost no concern about my status. It's hurt me since i haven't felt a push to keep increasing my income or professional skills. I make enough, have my friends and interests.
Im a very similar individual. I find my life is enriched this way and my happiness could not be higher, although it can be strange sometimes as we live in a world were most people, particularly in the western world are driven almost solely by status.
I also strongly relate to this. So much so that a lot of what was described in this podcast feels quite alien to me. Although I do recognize that most others do actively seek status. I agree with Skeletor (never thought I'd say those words) in that I find it quite liberating and I feel a strong sense of happiness knowing that I can pursue what makes me feel fulfilled without the weight of social pressures guiding my decisions.

All of his work was 100% original done through his decades of researching US, UK, Soviet & German/Third Reich archives and discovering original documents of historical importance. David Irving never denied the Holocaust but he did prove the numbers were massively overblown. It was Irving's research that forced Auschwitz to change their big plaque which once claimed 6 million Jews were killed in the Auschwitz gas chambers to every visitor for nearly 60 years...but today that same sign/plaque has now been officially changed to read 900k Jews were killed here. @@joenunez3800
It is a bit reductive, but I don't see why that makes it untrue.
@@joenunez3800 I’ve read James but I don‘t see how pragmatism applies here?

Don't worry. These two speakers are shills. I believe you.
This is me as well, but my ego still has a way of making me out to be the smartest person, and my excuse for low status is that I lack the motivation. I'm comfy enough so I don't push myself, but I also think I'm smart. You?

David Irving was the recognized as the worlds leading and most important historian on WW2.
David Irving was crucified much like, Charles Murray was crucified.

Research how much of Sam Harris' work is cited in actual ethical philosophy works or scientific papers on consciousness or neuroscience. You will shed your illusions.
I mean it is not particularly stupid to listen to him. But evaluating critically, his arguments aren't objectively better than those of, say, tucker carlson. He has opinions which match your taste, nothing wrong in listening to your ideologues. I mean tucker carlson has millions, so has jordan peterson, and if not censored even nick fuentes will have equal, if not more followers. You are just one of them, following your own taste.
I mean ffs, with all her creepy viciousness, mother of american libertarians, Ayn Rand is intellectually far more superior than anything Sam Harris would ever say.
@OdieHis content is good content even if I may not agree with it all its still good thought provoking conversation
Censorious Sam
trollorious Theo
Is it trolling when it's true?
@@robk5427 yep. Theo needs to get a job, his mom wants him out of her basement...
Haha brilliant.
it's so entertaining watching Sam not give a shit about these false claims
Great Conversation!!
Lol
HAHAHHAHAH
Is that your "always" voice?
I used to worship Sam. Now I mourn his loss like I do Hitchens. For the record, he was already dead to me before he explicitly stated he was completely lacking integrity. He's been wandering in the wilderness of mediocrity for years.
and yet you are still here and still lonely for any attention, ironic I'd say.
Sam chased away all the moderates when he embraced authoritarianism.
Amen
If you worshipped Sam to begin with, you weren't listening to him properly.
@@reinforcedpenisstem Ok, I didn't really worship him. I did admire and respect him though. I no longer do either.
well youtube chat is officially a dumpster fire. Think we need to migrate to reddit or something, where there's some moderation. Have fun people
Reddit....home of low T and people clamoring for censorship.
Lol fucking reddit? Reddit?!?? Lol that's you're alternative to TH-cam comments? Holy hell.
@@robk5427 Ironically, exactly what Sam Harris is advocating for.
@@robk5427 it’s hard to defend authoritarianism…hubris, not religion, is the root of all evil.
There is censorship, is the phase you are describing.
I've been pondering lots about this social dynamic lately and why it seems to be a motivation for lots of people somewhat confuses me since I naturally don't have much interest in participating. This came at a good time. Jesus does exist.
'Sam Harris, Personal Hygiene is Important.'
2018.
Jebus is IMAGINARY. It's all wishful thinking.
You have fallen from Grace, sir.
Something on the order of “repentance” seems to be in the cards.
The enormous ego and hubris makes that impossible, Harris is far less intelligent than he or his fans think he is.
@@Nick-AngelpeodSeaxisc How do you know how intelligent Sam is or is not? I'm curious about how you'd measure that? Is it as simple as noticing your disagreements with him and then, judging yourself to be more intelligent, deeming his opinions incorrect because they conflict with your own?
@@J.R.Y. "How do you know how intelligent Sam is or is not?"
Publicly stating that you would not care about murdered children in the basement of your favored politicians offspring is not a statement that would be made by someone of high intellect.
"and then, judging yourself to be more intelligent"
Reading comprehension is a thing and then there is just completely fabricating an argument or statement that does not exist.
That is only done by someone who has absolutely no argument to begin with.
"deeming his opinions incorrect because they conflict with your own?"
The previously publicly stated opinion made by Harris is in conflict with any form of decency or higher intellect and is planted firmly on the side of degeneracy, to disagree would only prove ones own lack of common sense and understanding of morality.
Bye.
@@Nick-AngelpeodSeaxisc Ted Bundy was generally regarded as an intelligent man, if not a murderous and immoral one. One can be devilishly intelligent, yet wholly immoral. So, you haven't done anything to disprove Sam's intelligence.
Do you actually think you are more intelligent than Sam?
@@J.R.Y. Your go to is Ted Bundy😂
Behave yourself ffs.
Hey Sam I think what marks was saying with private property was more That the bourgeoisie Would take all the property and simply Rent it out To the workers It was a matter of jealousy Kyle like BlackRock is doing right now when they're buying up all the property they can for rental properties and cutting the people out by offering cash So if father that shouldn't be private property because we would use that law to take land away from other people we did that to the American Indians As well Also the private property of a factory that something that gets moved to China leaving all the people that worked in the factory Jobless Again property rights
this one was a great listen sam
SOY HARRIS!
That’s an excellent one.
real jedi don't make fun of people...so you are fake jedi huh?
Maybe it was Ham Sarris. He has no other defense.
HDS. Harris Derangement Syndrome. Congrats, numpty.

He discusses all these topics and much more, and in a much more refreshing and entertaining way as he's not limited by the need to conform to stifling, politically correct orthodoxy as these two are.
