    This reminds me of Hannah Arendt’s concept of atomization and how it leads to totalitarianism. People need to act in the world and be judged on that action in order to develop their own self concept. If people lose their ability to be recognized for their actions, they become “atomized”. People then seek out groups of like minded people and they conform to that group, because they don’t want to lose that connection. Those groups coalesce to form political entities and you get totalitarian regimes.
    That can easily be seen as people desperately seeking status groups and subordinating their reason in order to belong to a status group. I think this is definitely playing a major role in our current cultural issues.

    • @joenunez3800
      @joenunez3800 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s a bit reductive tbh. I think William James’ volume on pragmatism is more convincing and generative, as far as making sense goes.

    • @TheCommonS3Nse
      @TheCommonS3Nse 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@joenunez3800
      It is a bit reductive, but I don't see why that makes it untrue. I will use an example to illustrate. I'm going to assume Storr's spheres of status (SOS) to be equivalent to Arendt's "space for action", as they are both areas in life where you are judged by your peers.
      Say we have an Amazon employee. At work he is required to select items from shelves with robotic efficiency. There is no SOS in this workplace, as you are judged solely based on a timer. If you select your products with 10 seconds to spare, you don't gain status, you just move onto the next item. You can only lose status by failing to meet your time quota. This employee makes $15 per hour, therefore they are forced to work a second job in order to survive. Let's say they drive for Uber. Uber has a slight SOS, as you receive stars to reflect your status as a good driver, but I wouldn't exactly consider that a social environment. With all of this time dedicated to working, our employee will likely have to dedicate their remaining time to one of family, friends or extracurricular activities, therefore they have lost another two SOS. I don't think this situation would be an outlier in present day America.
      Arendt would suggest that this person is more likely to find themselves part of a group where your social status is based on how strictly you adhere to the group's dogma. The Nazis or the Bolsheviks in Arendt's time, MAGA or BLM in today's world. This employee finds themselves aligning with a lot of what Trump has to say, and the more they agree with Trump, the higher their status in the MAGA SOS. Then you throw in lockdowns which make the MAGA group one of the only SOS in this employee's life. Arendt believed this person would desperately adhere to the dogma of the group for fear of losing one of their few remaining SOS. That is how you end up with good, honest, intellegent people going along with wild ideologies.
      That seems pretty straight forward to me. I can see that it is somewhat reductive, and I would never suggest that this is the only factor impacting our social problems, but I don't see why it wouldn't play a significant role. If you see a glaring hole in this logic, please explain, because I am always trying to improve my understanding of the world.

    • @joenunez3800
      @joenunez3800 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@sebastianhelm1718 I appreciate your observations of how it appears disjointed, and I’m not arrogant enough to presume its absolute relevance to all matters of particularity. So thank you. Insofar as making sense, I’ve found that pragmatism as a method of inquiry into understanding how meaning is derived from both empiricist and rationalist paradigms, depending upon its practical consequence, is helpful to me as I engage in a spirit of hermeneutics with the influential thinkers, such as Arendt. What forms the basis of her truth? Of the truths that become reoriented, sedimented, or indexed from the discursive archive, or genealogy of knowledge that becomes disciplinized? What, in turn gets subjugated as a result? As someone who is on his own journey to self-discovery, I find myself asking how current tensions, and the frictions thereof, might be understood as a heuristic device that helps to reveal the pluralities of existence that form the basis of, perhaps incommensurably so, human beliefs and, in turn, human actions. Again, thank you for asking. If you know of anything that might contribute to a fledgling intellect like mine, please do share. Be well

    David Irving was the recognized as the worlds leading and most important historian on WW2. All of his work was 100% original done through his decades of researching US, UK, Soviet & German/Third Reich archives and discovering original documents of historical importance.
    David Irving never denied the Holocaust but he did prove the numbers were massively overblown. It was Irving's research that forced Auschwitz to change their big plaque which once claimed 6 million Jews were killed in the Auschwitz gas chambers to every visitor for nearly 60 years...but today that same sign/plaque has now been officially changed to read 900k Jews were killed here. David Irving was crucified much like, Charles Murray was crucified.
    For the record, I'm an Israel supporter and an admirer of the Jewish people in general...so any claims of me being antisemitic just know that you're very wrong.
    Irving is a first class, second to none WW2 historian. He's a man only concerned with the truth...he even came out several years ago with some revisionism of his own work even though he knew he'd lose a huge portion of his following. But as Irving says, he will only go were the archives, documents & evidence take him. The truth is the truth no matter who doesn't like it.

    Insightful stuff, very interesting.
    However the remarks on the huge personal criticism received recently, how it internally can be dismissed because of the low status trump supporters pushing it, doesn't sit right with me at least.
    I do not live in the U.S and have not been part of any election taken place there.
    In fact, -who- you spoke of in that controversy couldn't have matter less to me personally, but -what- you spoke of is a whole different matter.
    Status, ideology, money...it's fascinating (..disheartening) to see how it effects everyones reasoning, and to a greater degree the more one is invested in any of these trades.
    With that said, you're still putting out great stuff.
    It's just that Trump (or how I view it, -democracy) part that still creeps up and scramble it all.
    Ethics and morale, doing objectively good, speaking truth untainted...
    I'd say you do best by retracting your statement, saying you really need to think this through, and come back with insights that separate individuals/ideologies from the actual process of democracy.
    Admitting being wrong on something isn't the end of things, rather it shows you're truly capable of working past it.

      If people like you don’t like SH opinion, then you should be drooling in annoyance that DT was willing to burn the whole system to the ground.
      Also strange people accuse SH of having TDS, whilst constantly behave in a similar way towards SH.

      Any examples? I’m not sure I’d call someone a monster for a mistake, even a mistake that wiped out 99% of the earth with a long, suffering death wouldn’t by that fact alone generally be considered a monster in common usage of the term…It has more to do with why the mistake was commited, imo, at least from my understanding of how the label tends to be used. It really seems like the mistake can be arbitrarily serious while not being a monster.

      Hard disagree, for reasons already addressed by Pookz. If someone killed all life on Earth, except theirs and mine, by total accident, I don’t think I would even be tempted to call them a monster. A fool of apocalyptic proportions, but not a monster.

      I am not a religious nut. I don't think sam has expertise in anything at all but sophistry and word play. And if you have been so much impressed by his "thought provoking conversation". I am sure your thinking abilities haven't really lifted off. His best argument is showing atrocities by religious nuts then asking rhetorically "If you don't agree that this is wrong, then something is wrong with you." His degrees in philosophy and neuroscience are just typical high society frauds.( His main education upto 40 years of his life was in english language or something, his degrees are purely honorary ones.) He and other wildly successful internet intellectuals are just a symptom of degeneracy of intellectual life in the west and rise of mediocre edgelords in current era. And he is in true sense a fraud just like trump but on the opposite side of the spectrum.
      I mean for all his rants, if richard Dawkins pushes some argument by evolutionary explanation, he at least knows exactly what he is talking about, while as Sam Harris offers JUST HIS OPINIONS, which aren't even original or scientific or logical. He just FEELS things should be the way he is arguing for. Real arguments aren't based on intuitions or common sense. Everyone has got intuitions and common sense, how does one's argument gets to be decided to be better than others??????
      His whole premise is either appealing to peoples emotions or intuitions or common sense. I don't find it "thought provoking".
      In good times, people used to write books, then academics used to critique them, then after surviving the crucible of professional criticism, those ideas used to attract people. Nowadays "intellectuals" just need internet following and have FANS(how stupid) to gain acceptability.
      If there hadn't been anti-religious sentiment after 9/11, sam harris would have been trying his trickery in Social justice movement or stock market or somthing.
      Research how much of Sam Harris' work is cited in actual ethical philosophy works or scientific papers on consciousness or neuroscience. You will shed your illusions.
      I mean it is not particularly stupid to listen to him. But evaluating critically, his arguments aren't objectively better than those of, say, tucker carlson. He has opinions which match your taste, nothing wrong in listening to your ideologues. I mean tucker carlson has millions, so has jordan peterson, and if not censored even nick fuentes will have equal, if not more followers. You are just one of them, following your own taste.
      I mean ffs, with all her creepy viciousness, mother of american libertarians, Ayn Rand is intellectually far more superior than anything Sam Harris would ever say.
