The discussion between Hima and her grandfather leads to a better understanding of the plant life around us. We know that plants produce their own food. They draw nutrients and water from the soil; leaves absorb sunlight and carbon dioxide to produce their own food. Depending on the soil and climate different plants grow in different regions. The plants that grow on land are called terrestrial plants e.g. banyan, peepal, mango and tamarind. Plants that grow in water are called aquatic plants e.g. duck weed, water hyacinth, water lilly and lotus. Plants even grow in deserts where there is very little water. A variety of cactus and other plants survive in the desert, these plants have thick stems and leaves where they store water.
A plant can basically be divided into two parts. The part above the soil is called the shoot system. The part below the soil is called root system. The main function of the roots is to hold the plant firmly to the soil and to absorb nutrients and water from the soil. There are two types of root systems; tap roots and fibrous roots.
The roots of aquatic plants have soft and spongy roots so that they can float on water. Some plants have thick roots where they store food, e.g. carrot, beetroot, radish, etc.
The flower in plants grows into fruit. Fruit have seeds, from which new plants grow. Flowers are of different shapes, colours, sizes and smells. The main parts of the flower are petal, pistil, stamen, sepal and receptacle. Some flowers are used to make medicines such as hibiscus, neem and tulsi. Some flowers are used for making beauty oils and fragrances such as jasmine, rose, lily and lavender. We even eat some flowers such as cauliflower and banana flower.
Fruit are a source of food. Some fruit such as lemon, neem and amla have medicinal values. Fruit such as soap-nut and shikakai are used as soap and shampoo.
Ugadi is our New Year Day, we make Ugadi Pachchadi on this festival day. This is a mixture of six different tastes, sweet (jaggery), sour (tamarind), salt (rock salt), acrid (raw mango), spice (chillies or pepper) and bitter (neem flowers). These six tastes represent the six emotions of life.
Plants play an important role in our lives. Plants are a gift of Mother Nature. We need to protect our environment by planting more and more trees.
