something I realised while playing rolling girl on diva as I was watching this; sekai has brought in an audience that just..doesn’t truly care. I mean, once you FC or AP a song do you ever play it again other than in co op or watching the 3dmv with your new outfits? I find myself replaying songs a lot more in diva than I do in sekai (point and case rolling girl, I haven’t touched the sekai chart for months) bc it’s just more fun and longer, which also brings me to the point that people’s attention spans for songs have gotten much shorter than when growing up with Diva. For example with Melt or HCM in sekai people are upset with how long it is even tho the length is nowhere near as long as diva’s version.

Another bitter truth, you play that song over & over again bcs the limited song selection & diva extend is the first one to bring good song selection.
While sekai ? Their song library is GIGANTIC new 5+ song each month, till the point where newly created song is getting the attention when they release bcs its almost like "timed sekai exclusive" until its released on other media (ex: youtube) + the attention is divided by "event on overall" "unlocking event story" "exchanging event point" "farming gems" "coordinating card formation" (focusing on bonus% or scoring for limited card selection bcs of F2P) PLUS its more rewarding to get FC on newer song instead of old song bcs the gems they provided. While project diva... Your attention doesnt divided by anything, only costume maybe...

The fandom also disregards a song's impact before inserting their own thoughts into it. Sure, opinions are allowed but Melt permanently shifted the Vocaloid scene and showed what the software was truly capable of. It used to be praised, and now sekai players just say "Ew, Melt long song = bad song!!!" and. I hate it! I don't think Sekai ruined Vocaloid or Prodiva, I just think that they're giving us a bad wrap. The fandom is a god awful place, and I used to be in Sekai twitter so I think I'll blame myself of that..

@@lazyrainysoul those views on melt or other songs like it make me irrationally upset. people ignore so many of the beautiful worlds within these songs over such shallow things. i get not wanting to play a long song, but that’s all they see it for. like, come on… melt is a BREATHTAKINGLY gorgeous song and hitorinbo envy is full of so much anguish. but that gets brushed over.

disagree, I replay at least 35% of the songs regularly
I have 2 playlists in game, one for long songs, one for short, and they both each have 50-60 songs in them. In EN there are 320ish songs, and 110~/320 is a pretty decent amount. The game also introduced me to most of the music I listen to now, and without it I absolutely would not enjoy or know about 95% of it. Prior to playing sekai I only listened to kikuo and eve, and now I have many producers I listen to (with songs in and out of the game) even if I'm not particularly aware of "vocaloid history" and etc. Saying people don't care and just move on after playing once is sort of a massive overgeneralization in my opinion, because every dedicated player (casuals shouldn't count, they're in every popular game) I've known in this game either was heavily into vocaloid or got into it because of the game.

I mean I guess I understand from a financial standpoint why Sekai has replaced Diva, but it just sucks when there are clearly a lot of people, including me, who still prefer what the Diva games offered. F, the first Diva to get an international release, was my introduction to the series as well as to rhythm gaming (I was even there when Sega made that Facebook post asking fans if they'd be interested in the series getting ported over) and I honestly can't say that I, a middle schooler at that time who absolutely sucked at the rhythm aspect of the game, would've remembered it as fondly if not for the things I could enjoy outside of the core gameplay, like the DIVA rooms and the entertaining MVs that through visual storytelling gave so much more depth to the songs and made them stick out more to me. To this day I still play MM+ and the mods people make but also find myself missing the F games and wishing they got ported too.
Idk, I'm bummed out but at the same time don't wanna be all "back in my day" about it if this is what the majority of rhythm game/vocaloid fans really prefer 😅

  • @StarryPenguin
    @StarryPenguin 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +24

I feel like one reason they didn’t add an edit mode is the lighting engine. Let’s be honest, the Arcade models, while being beautifully detailed, only looked good when lit well. You can see in the future tone pvs that they heavily manipulate the light source depending on where the character is in relation to the camera. Adding an edit mode would just lead to people discovering unflattering shots/angles when compared to f/f2nd. Overall, I believe the arcade engine seems too restrictive to really have a polish looking edit mode.

project diva died on PDX despite amazing songlist, it was rather short.
the moment i saw PD arcade/ft is coming to consoles, i knew it was nearing the series end of life/support since all PDFT had was just the rhythm game experience without the things that made project diva iconic, like the diva room and edit mode. And regarding content, we haven't got a new announcement on a new project diva nor new dlc since that june 2020 stream, and oh speaking of non-arcade project diva, its been 8 years since PDX.
project mirai needs to come back, the hardware limitations of the 3ds made the overall creative direction unique, you can see how amazing the mv were on matryoshka, kokoro,
romeo and Cinderella, world is mine, etc. even they had remakes of existing songs specifically for that version, like electric angel.
i felt like the direction their going for project sekai is VASTLY different from project diva, since project diva console has a rather lower difficulty than project diva arcade charts, they're focused on difficulty of charts, while sure they have a story mode now, i felt like thats the only thing that keeps me playing the game, otherwise its pretty much not my cup of tea, gameplay loop wise, i don't hate the gacha honestly but i just don't like how to obtain modules in the game being overly grindy.
i think this kinda sums up my love/hate with the hatsune miku project series, i would still play sekai whenever there's a song or 2 i like but pretty much thats it, im looking forward to fanmade project diva mods like eden project and PDMM f edition.

Hey! I recommend you to play the other games because they are so good especially f2nd, and the reason why future tone is a compilation of songs is because is a port of the arcade machines exclusive to Japan released in 2010 but the version that is ported is the arcade future tone from 2013 with all the updates up to 2015 with the realease of mirai dx. And the truth is that the boss of the project diva didn't knew what to do with the saga anymore , this was when f2nd came out, and he wanted to quit so he decided to make a last game wich was diva x wich is a love letter to all old players and new commers to the series. And because the boss was quitting they decided to port the arcade machine as a desesperate move from sega because diva x wasn't all well received :(

Given it's one of Sega's more successful franchises I doubt it's ended as such. Though I doubt any future release would bear much resemblance to the previous ones either. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a new Project Diva game for the current generation of consoles at some point - but I'll bet it will more closely resemble Sekai than it will Diva.

Ever since encountering my first Vocaloid songs a good... 12 years ago (!), I've always wanted to get a Project Diva game but never could due to only having Nintendo consoles and not really being interested in other Sony exclusives. Couldn't really get Mirai either due to never having seen it get a physical release at the time.
My first option, aside from struggling to run the older Diva games on my crappy computers was as soon as I got access to my own credit card to buy Future Tone on the PS4 we did get after my sister getting invested in Sony exclusives. Frankly, I was blown away by the huge variety of songs available, so much that I did buy the overpriced dlc, because everything was new and I kept finding new songs to love, though I was still a bit passive in regards to looking for what was beyond the available songs.
Now that I've become a huge Sekai fan, I've actually started to actively look for what each producer has created, and I really like the spotlight given to each one with the commissionned songs, though I can still see what the game itself lacks in comparison to the incredible works of art that were Diva's MVs, or just how important each song can feel in a game like the older Divas where you weren't suddenly put in front of a list of 200 songs as you first play the game.
I genuinely enjoy and love each main side of the "Hatsune Miku rhythm games", as they each contributed in different ways in my overall appreciation of Vocaloid. I understand how easy it can be to make asumptions especially with things you don't (want to) like, but no matter what game serves as the main flagship rhythm game of Vocaloid, we can still enjoy Vocaloid itself for the wonderful works of art it brought us, and maybe hope for an eventual return of Diva, or at least something adjacent to it... I'll keep crossing my fingers just in case 🙏

Although I played pjsk first and not the pjdiva series because it was free, I spent my time learning about the vocaloid fandom and how vocaloid came to be. Me personally, I loved vocaloid the minute I saw my first vocaloid song ever, patchwork staccato )Besides nyanyanyanyanya). The main issue I have with pjsk is that I feel it kind of lacks the passion the pjdiva games had. When I got diva x a few months back and I saw the end credits roll with all the fanart… it made me sort of emotional how much love was put into the game and the franchise as a whole. I really enjoy sekai with all the songs I know and love, but project diva was the franchise that really made me fall in love with vocaloid as a whole. Idk I just can’t explain the joy I have when I open project diva and play my favorite song while I hum along.

guys someone should get an entire team and ask sega if they can earn the rights to diva so they can keep the diva series going so we can keep having fun other than just flick tap flick tapping on our phones !! someone needs to atleast ask sega if they can make new diva fangames
    edit:
i feel like even if theres more trends going on, and even if people leave the old ones, like edit mode, we could still add them for the people who still want to use them, it would just be plain wrong to remove it even if you knew some people still use it.. but we should still make fangames and update it when we can, atleast WHEN we can so we dont get tired out. we should take like ideas from everyone so we can get a littleee bit of everything that people like.. we should all be able to make contributions of it and all that,, adding onto the updates, we could add ingame-purchases like pjsekai, but for more exclusive things like special songs like future tone and everything, more outfits if we make mvs, and just more gems/currency like pjsekai! and we should make a story, like pdx and sekai! maybe a character creator for the mvs, or add an online story mode w/ user-made npcs around the world, or an open-world thing like genshin, where you can move around, or just a 2d thing.. just do anything we can!! id rather have anything good rather than nothing..

I remember one or two years ago when I found out project diva was on the switch, I basically begged my parents for it (I only had nintendo consoles my whole life so I felt really surprised when I saw mega mix on there lol) Even though many people didn’t really like mega mix, I immediately fell in love with it. Not only could I play fun challenging charts (I mostly play rhythm games so I like playing hard charts), but I could also jam out to my favourite songs. Although, I feel like the one thing that made me love the game was the MVs. Although some people are conflicted with the MVs in Mega Mix, to me, they gave the game so much more magic and fun to it.
Going back to about September 2023 or so, Project Sekai (finally) launched in my region. As you could expect, I was overjoyed and immediately downloaded it when I got home. Although it was kinda fun at first, I stopped enjoying it quite a bit after a month and ran back to Mega Mix. I have quite a few friends who play Sekai and have NEVER heard of Diva in their life. (To be fair, I know that Sekai is free and accessible and feel really bad for people that don’t own any consoles, and I’m not blaming Sekai for Diva’s downfall,) but to me I feel really sad because I know that so many of my friends know Hatsune Miku as “that one character from that mobile game that sings” and would never have the opportunity to experience the magic of Project Diva’s amazing MVs and song charts over 2 minutes (which is completely understandable but MAN the songs lose soooo much personality when they’re cut into half).
I know this is a really long rant but I only found Wowaka’s works (rest in peace) through the rolling girl Project Diva MV on TH-cam, and to this day the song still holds a very special place in my heart and probably will for a long time.

I guess the argument is well if project sekai hadn't been created, diva games definitely would implement all the new stuff diva fans wanted for years. But with the quote at the end about it "proving difficult," something held them back from making the successor project to diva🤔
If the developers of diva games had played their cards differently with song dlcs and reused content it would have been a whole different ballgame.

I believe all of the blame should go to SEGA. They sabotaged the main Project Miku games, by getting rid of the old team that did care about the game, and X was just not good. And the 'newer' games are just stupid arcade ports with no sort of originality in them whatsoever, no wonder the sales for X were troubling, only good thing about FT is the gameplay, and MegaMix fucking sucks and the mods are what keeping this poor excuse of a game alive. And I doubt SEKAI should be blamed for it, I do like SEKAI honestly, BUT the DIVA series was doomed since X, and SEGA was sabotaging the series themselves and MegaMix was pretty much released at a time where SEKAI was in developement and SEKAI simply had an delayed release if i remember correctly. People should just stop blaming SEKAI for DIVA coming to an end. SEGA is clearly at fault.
And take this with a grain of salt, i'm not a new VOCALOID fan but i'm not an og either, i played SEKAI for VOCALOID at first but then got into the other things abt it, it's pratically a VOCALOID subgenre imo, and the characters are not bad. DIVA and SEKAI are real different games, ppl tend to like DIVA over SEKAI but whatever pays the bills i guess. Rest in peace Project DIVA, literally got sabotaged by SEGA

Well that was kinda X where you had to grind for modules 😭 a lot of people didn't like it, but I think it's okay kinda. I prefer the way you got modules in 2nd-f2nd though and I'm glad that I never have to go through that pain for grinding modules again..

I absolutely agree with you on the Edit Mode thing. Would've made it much easier to make 3D videos, and easier to add songs in. Hell, it would've gone SO well with Steam Workshop. It was one hell of a missed opportunity. I get that the PS4 couldn't do what Edit Mode needed, but come on. MM+ was the perfect opportunity for it.

I don’t want there to be a new game. The vocaloid community changed since Megamix. And I don’t blame Sekai for it entirely.
1- The rise in popularity of non-cryptonloids is notable here. Out of the top 5 songs with the most views, (being Goodbye Sengen, Echo, Shoujo A, Aishite x3 and Kyoufuu All Back), only 2/5 are sung by cryptonloids, being Shoujo A and Aishite. Making a new Project Diva game in 2024 without it being a Megamix Port would be a terrible move considering most of the songs 2024 vocaloid stans hold dear to their hearts could not be included.
Project Diva comes from an era were the Cryptonloids ruled the fandom and those who were popular outside of that category were few and far between. Only including Cryptonloid songs was not an issue at all since they made up a large percentage of the popular songs at the time. That much can’t be said anymore. And it’s perfectly fine.
2- The Project Diva franchise has always reused songs from other instalments. If I recall correctly, ALL of the F2nd songs EXCEPT Kagerou Daze ended up in Future Tone, and that became sort of the standard. X and Megamix didn’t really include ALL of the Future Tone songs so automatically, most of the fandom considered both games inferior.
Now, where I’m getting at with this: there’s NO way using the entire Future Tone catalog while adding new songs would be profitable. ON TOP OF THAT, let’s be honest, a load of the Future Tone songs didn’t stand the test of time. Handing out a plate full of Saihate, Futari de, Sakura no Ame, etc. to a modern day vocaloid fan who’s used to hearing some Kanaria, Azari, Chinozo and all of those vocaloPs that popped off after the Project Diva high could be jarring. And not very appealing. Keeping a balance between newer more appealing songs for the modern audience WHILE keeping enough of the classic PJD charts like Kocchi Muite Baby, Decorator, Sadistic Music Factory, etc. for the die hard Project Diva fan franchise who won’t buy the game unless their favorite charts are in would be super hard and just a fight to please two very different demographics.

I’ll be honest, I love the fact that Megamix is just… just a good rhythm game. That’s it. I didn’t have to unlock any costumes or songs, no stress over a long story mode or challenges. The only thing to keep you going is getting better and the fun of it, and I absolutely ADORE that. Maybe I’m in the minority but I just think rhythm should do their one thing really well and not overcomplicate it. If you don’t like the actual music or rhythm gameplay enough to keep going with that then there are other games with more modes.

    FT ain’t even a mainline
Arcade 2010 was originally a kinda-remake of the PSP original with unique mechanics and exclusive songs but later iterations of the arcade game turned it into a compilation of the series as new DIVA and MIRAI games released
No matter what people say FT MM and MM+ are NOT TRUE DIVA GAMES
They lack the magic that the other games have and i know that’s the intention as they are straight up compilations but people need to stop acting like they are mainlines that have the same magic and creativity that the PSP and F trilogies had
X may have been divisive but FT was the start of the dark era and eventual death of the franchise despite its popularity
I know that’s odd to say but the franchise may have actually been in a better place if SEGA didn’t just bank on FT carrying the entire franchise as they kept rereleasing that game until people got sick of it or stopped caring

i'm gonna be real: this video feels more about complaining about future tone being the "worst diva game of all time" and essentially blaming it for pjd's demise from my prespective (my adhd ass may be misunderstanding, but that's how i view it) rather than why the "sekai killed diva" arguement is dumb. for starters, future tone isn't even a "mainline" diva game, but it was a semi-remake/arcade version of project diva arcade back in 2010, almost a year after the first game's release. arcade added songs from the games overtime, and even songs that weren't in any of the mainline games. it's why future tone is a compilation game since it's a port of an arcade game. in my opinion, as much as i am a defender of project diva x... it's unfortunately why we've seen a huge drought in diva games. the decisions made in pdx is why the reception was lukewarm from fans and wasn't selling well. not helped by the fact that the general producer, hiroshi utsumi, of the games left sega a few months later.
future tone and mega mix are not the only games that rehashed content: project diva IN GENERAL has reused content since the beginning. 2nd had reused songs from the first game, extend also had some of 2nd's songs reused, f2nd has songs from the old psp games, mirai dx is an updated version of mirai 2 WHICH ITSELF reuses content from mirai. and that's not taking into account the reused models. (i.e. dreamy theater uses arcade's models). hell, future tone, at least it's arcade variant, is actually an updated version of project diva arcade. (kinda the reason why the lighting, expressions, and overall models look so much better compared to the pre-f songs lol). and yes, mega mix is a demake of diva arcade and was handled by new devs after the old team left. which stinks cuz i kinda like megamix, simply cuz i can play project diva on the go just like i did in the psp and vita era. though most of the pvs take a downgrade a lot. so yeah, the entire franchise is guilty of reusing content, not future tone. though admittedly i wish the later diva games after utsumi's departure weren't just rehashed versions of future tone/arcade, so i do blame x for that.
i do agree with a few points: i wish we had the cute little diva rooms from past games and the lack of edit mode... okay, i blame sony for not including it since the ps4 doesn't support mp3 audios like the psp, vita, and ps3 did. :/ and the overpriced dlcs... yeah no comment, i don't like those.
idk maybe it's the longtime diva fan of me that is kinda sick of seeing future tone/megamix be considered a "mainline" diva game when it never really was. i was expecting the video to explain why sekai did not kill diva and instead was mostly about future tone bad. plus, i feel like you overly compare future tone x and mirai dx way too much and it kinda bothered me a lot, heck not even acknowledging the original psp games. obviously, nothing against you and it's your opinion at the end of the day! i still disagree with a lot of your points and calling future tone the absolute worst game is a huge stretch.
sorry if my words are all over the place. i just have a lot of thoughts and issues with the video. i've been a fan of vocaloid and diva since 2011 and a sekai fan since its announcement in 2019. i think sekai is a great spiritual successor to the diva games and i don't think it "killed" the franchise. imo the mishandling of the series since x and utsumi's departure is why the series has been left dormat.

@@NotAnya2D don’t really know what to say since this is all valid, but i hear you. staff decisions and departures are a huge part of what makes games what they are, and i can DEFINITELY see an argument as to why x could have been to blame for the series’ downfall.
i personally think future tone is to blame for a lot of these issues mainly because it had more rehashed content than the other games, even though they ALL have rehashed content. it also doesn’t take many unique spins on that content (which is why i being up mirai dx so much-while having similar content, it changed a lot of things up) or include a lot of the things that made the diva games more than just rhythm games.
also, while i understand that while future tone isn’t actually a mainline diva game, i feel that the effect it had on the community was the same, if not stronger, than the effect that mainline diva games had anyway. and because of that effect being stronger overall, all of the parts that made games like diva unique got overlooked in service of quantity > quality.
my goal here was to show that, no-project sekai did not kill project diva, because the community being complacent with the lack of unique content/other gameplay modes we see in games like future tone did. i will admit that i am really biased here, since i really do not like future tone (in comparison to other diva games. if compared to any other video game, it would be a favorite of all time for me. plus, it holds a super special place in my heart)-especially compared to the other diva games i’ve played or indulged in in the past. so you do bring up a really good point about this video being more about future tone. it’s my belief that future tone’s lack of variation and the community’s acceptance of that caused the series’ downfall, but that belief would not have grown to be so strong if not for any inherent bias i had. this is a pitfall to watch out for when making any argument, whether or not it is part of a opinionated piece. your insight on diva x and its creators is really interesting!! whatever stance someone takes on this, the difference between these games and the trajectory of the series illustrates a stark contrast.
also dw!!! it didn’t sound like a mess of words at all!

Personally I wouldn't give up hope yet, unless the Switch 2 gets a port of Project Sekai imo there's a very high chance something Miku will be on that system doubly so with Project Voltage I'd be shocked if they don't market those songs as a selling point for a new game and they announced more happening eventually
It might just be a one per system series now that just gets longer support in dlc instead of multiple entries
Oh. Nevermind I hadn't seen that interview

As a crusty relic of a vocaloid fan(been listening to vocaloid since 2008), Project Sekai just doesn't sit right with me. I get that it made the vocaloid music scene more widely available and easier to enter for younger audiences...
But at what cost? I'm a huge fan of rhythm games, but Sekai just feels so... lazy? Plus, part of what made original Project Diva so good was edit mode. People were able to make custom PVs and charts.
The reason why people get nostalgia for the old days of vocaloid is because they miss the "made for fans by fans" aspect. Vocaloid songs and media were highly fan and hobbyist driven... Whereas project sekai has these song contests where people only care about making a song that's profitable and gets into the game.
I feel like the drive to be original and unique has been scrapped for what's popular.
