  • As part of completing our 15th year of Jiva, we would like to introduce a series that celebrates the students who have completed their Arangetram, a milestone in a solo dancer’s career where the student “ascends the stage” for the first time and performs a full Margam (the path, or full solo repertoire) in Bharatanatyam.
It is truly a testament to the dancer's emotional and physical capacity and maturity, and the training itself is a process where much is learned and developed by both the teacher and the student. In my experience, a special connection and a lifelong appreciation and understanding of the art are nurtured.
My first Arangetram was with Aditi Narayanan on Sept. 17, 2017, at NYU Skirball Center. Aditi was then 16, a junior in high school, and a very talented and expressive dancer. Aditi has art in her genes, she is the great-granddaughter of famous Carnatic composer Smt. Ambujam Krishna. Aditi now is at Yale, where she is cultivating her singing, acting, and dancing skills:)
Here is a clip of her Javali, Madapayale in Paras, which she learned from my teacher, Bragha Bessell. Here, the young heroine is being tormented by Cupid’s five different flower arrows affecting different parts of her body and being.
