I’m a fellow slow traveler. I spent most of my time in SE Asia. I own 3 rental properties [in Memphis, I paid approx $100K each] with mortgages on all of them. I have a property manager that does a fantastic job. The revenue I get pays about half my expenses. I sold my home and put the proceeds in an index fund. The interest off the index funds pays the other half.
I’ve watched you guys for several years now. As a retired video production person I appreciate how you guys have continued to grow with your online presence. All aspects have improved. Maybe the biggest leap is attaining good audio. I think it would be fun to look back at your transition from beginners to present day. Good stuff.
When we have to go back and watch some of our old videos to grab clips, we almost cringe! We started out know nothing at all and still have a lot to learn!! 😊 Thank you for sticking with us all this time! 😁
I have an accounting degree, had a career in financial software consulting and running a small biz, and in retirement I have a handful of clients I do bookkeeping and business advisory services for. It keeps my mind active. Now I am considering a YT channel on budget solo travel and early retirement. I am still playing with the idea. Grounded Life Finances kind of led me into it. But I do know there is a lot of work in the channel thing. I actually have clients that are content creators.
Finance channels do very well on TH-cam. If you have the knowledge already, flip the camera one a get started!! We decided that we had nothing to lose and everything to gain.
I started my own business reselling vintage clothes, accessories and home décor. I can do most of the work online but when I travel, I have someone pack and ship orders for me. I enjoy shopping and love being my own boss, working only when I want, and the extra income pays for all my travel. Best of all, I source new product inventory on my trips, so my travel expenses are also tax-deductible.
We live in a small Colorado mountain town for 4 months in the summer and RV camp host for a free place to stay. We do have a longtime business that we can do from anywhere (we work 10-20 hrs a week). But my GF has mixed in waiting tables for the summer and does quite well. I am pretty confident that if our business goes away we can both do that for 4 months and make enough to travel and live the other 8 months. I am not too proud to do that.
We are fortunate that we own 3 apartments that will be our main source of passive income when we begin slow traveling next year at the age of 52. We maintain a home warranty that covers repairs on pretty much anything for a small deductible amount. Our daughter lives in the area and she will be our "property manager" - being an HOA we don't need to worry about any of the maintenance to the outside but of course we do need to account for that HOA monthly fee. We do have non-retirement accounts to fund some unexpected events and also retirement accounts for when we reach 59 1/2 - We are also very fortunate to be debt free which I agree with you guys is key to the success of retiring early. We are not camera friendly people :) so doing videos may not work for us, we know our limitations and making friends is definitely not our strength, overtime our circle of friends and people we hang out with has shrunk to almost zero, most times is just just the two of us. I do consult a lot of people on their finances and at my job as a loan officer on mortgages etc. so there may be a way to profit from it as a consultant...Thanks for sharing, Cheers!
That will be great to supplement your travels, for sure. Having your daughter willing to be the property manager is a major bonus (always great when it's someone you trust). It sounds like consulting could also be a side gig ☺. Safe travel ahead!!
That is so awesome! You got to do something you love, helping others do something they love - all while making some money doing it! A complete win-win!
Can you do an updated video on camera/mic equipment, editing software, etc. Basically how you do videos? Your quality has gotten so much better within the last six months.
That's so great to hear, so happy to hear this video fit what you were looking for. You're awesome - thanks so much for the beers, we really appreciate your support. Cheers 🍻
i met a retired expat in Cusco Peru where he would transport Americans/Canadians from/to the airport because a lot of tourists feel safer that way - he advertised on facebook etc. - i thought that was a good partime gig

I'm originally from your home state, much further south than your hometown, which is beautiful, but I'd love to see a video from there or even Seattle and surrounding areas while you're home!
You guys have been fun to watch. Andrea and I have gotten good information from your channel. I’d like to make money off my travel addiction but my lack of computer skills requires me to know more than I’m willing to spend time on. I do enjoy my reels but it’s likely not going to make me any money.

New sub to your channel and love it! Such great info and the way you guys share your knowledge back and forth is quite pleasant to watch and listen to. Not ready to travel but inspiring to do so. Thank you. 😊
I also just started writing a book. Working title, from bankrupt broker to Mexico millionaire. I was living in Seattle and lost my house in 08 to the market crash. I moved onto a tiny house barge that I cobbled together enough money to buy. Interior living space was 240 ft.². But I was happy. Until one day it started taking on water…
Just FYI the intro to your videos is very skippy and blurry up until it gets to you both starting the video. Wish I could do a screen shot. Thank you for all the wonderful content, always learn something new😊
Off topic question. My husband and I are very seasoned travelers, but our next trip is to SE Asia and involves some excursions where we'll be leaving our stuff on the boat, van etc. We both need to have our laptops with us and it will just not be feasible to lug them around with us all day. What do you generally do in those situations?
We usually only go on day trips and leave our valuables back at our accommodations. When we do need extra security on the road, we put all valuables in our locked suitcases. If your excursion is with a reputable company, then you shouldn't have any problems.
You always have such good, practical advice. I came up with three ideas just because I listened to this. Also, I'd like to request that you include something in your videos about wine at the places you go to. I enjoy having one token cold beer every summer as a nod to the hot weather, but mostly I forget! Same with rum and eggnog at Christmas. Thanks to you both:)
One of my agents was a photographer in his previous career. He makes an extra $90K a year from people/companies buying his old pics! Even though he does real estate now, he uses that extra income to travel with his wife and take even more pictures... and he continues to make more & more money every year.
One of your first points regarding renting out your current residence is a valid point of issue. In Canada, and specifically Ontario, I have been told by accountants and investment advisors alike that I should consider selling my residence rather than looking to rent it out. Problematic tenants and having them removed can be a real hassle. Your concern about having a Property Manager is also an issue. The other issue by selling the property is taking yourself out of the housing market, in a rising market. This deserves real thought. The residence is an asset and should earn you some income. I would also not minimize the effort you made to become known on TH-cam and gain your audience. The audience has to like you and appreciate your content too which is not guaranteed either (it's not an "If you build it, they will come" situation, no matter good you think you are). You have to be comfortable in doing it, as well as investing in the technology. Not everyone will become a conglomorate selling bling bling!! ;) Cheers to both!
Great points, Robert. On the housing issue, one of my best friends had a rental. The older single lady was great for over three years. She passed away and her grandson moved in. My friend had no idea until the payments stopped. It took him a few months to get the grandson out, he trashed the place before he left, and nothing could be done about it. My friend is a deputy sheriff!!
Totally agree on prop management while away. I'm still in the US and my rentals are in Mexico. Soon I'll be moving there and self managing but then I'll start the slow roll out on the properties selling one every three years. So many times I've gotten a message, "hey the internet is down, or can we take these towels to the beach, the neighbor is being noisy.."
Have y'all thought about doing some one on one travel consultation? You could have 1/2 hour or 1 hour time slots for zoom calls for fee. Although maybe the time differences you mentioned would make this difficult. Thanks for this video!
We have but like you mention, the time difference would be a challenge. We also have a lot of behind the scenes work we do to get each video ready for launch. We think we have a good balance going at the moment.
Lucky on my end the ratio of property management to income works out very much in my favor. Thank goodness. I did teach business English to adults in person in Spain, it was fun and financially I did well. I can't get behind the being a local tour guide proposal though. It just stinks of taking advantage over ACTUAL locals.
I am a slow traveler, also currently in Herceg Novi, Montenegro. I do have the benefit of retirement income as a federal employee, still too young to collect SS. But I have stated instagram and will be podcasting on slow travel as a single man for additional income. I love it so might as well see if I can monetize it.
How is your merch selling? Are the pieces with sayings more popular or the logo ones? Nice logo btw. My logo is a replica of a vintage pasta floor tile from Mérida Mexico.

There have been times that we have had issues and went to a local Starbucks. Ironically, we had a house sit in the US we had to do this!! 🤣But for the most part, besides Greece, we haven't had any issues.
I skimmed through the video to see if you mention what someone could expect to earn from posting TH-cam videos like you do, but unless I missed it, I didn’t see it.
We make money by posting videos on TH-cam but to say how much someone can expect to make would be difficult. There are too many factors that will differ from one person to another.
I can understand that. Thank-you for responding. Was just wondering if it’s worth investing in the photography equipment and my time. BTW, I like the quality of your videos. Video and sound quality are great. Thank-you for not having techno drum machine music in the background.

Here is a link that has a few of the best.
