When you're abroad for 8 months, it can be a strange feeling to come back home where everything feels "normal" again. It's called Reverse Culture Shock. This video explains what my mind is currently going through as I begin my 4 week trip around the USA.
To all my travel friends out there -- Can anyone relate to me with reverse culture shock?

So reverse culture shock basically means feeling uncomfortable in your own Homeland than other countries that you were exploring well it's something new for me thanks Drew

Yes, exactly. Also because you experience your own country differently after traveling in foreign lands for months at a time and getting used to different cultures, customs and standards of living.

Prajwal Basnet My case is kind of like that but there’s a twist, I've lived here in my hometown ever since I was a kid but always feel out of place due to the fact that I’m bilingual. I honestly don't think that I belong to any culture

I know the feeling man! Luckily it gets less intense both ways the more you travel...but it will never go away completely. It's always a weird mix of emotions going back home.

It's actually worse than that. You've changed, your hometown's changed, you're much more of a foreigner here in your hometown than you ever were abroad. And last but not least, hardest part of all: once you've grown a multicultural mindset it's just so hard to find interest in, or even just respect monocultural people, especially when their only culture is the one you know best. Old friends you used to love, acquaintances, neighbours, people you used to enjoy talking to... all of a sudden they aren't even humans anymore. They're more like robots marching in line, repeating the same few behavioral patterns. Like mouthpieces of their culture, old broken records producing the same few aggravating sounds over and over again. To say talking to them can be a nightmare is an understatement. It's a strange, lonely nightmare filled with boredom and self-isolation. Moments shared with fellow migrants are pretty much the only solace.

This is so relatable. I’m an Asian guy who lives in Europe and hasn’t been back home for almost 2 years as of now. Last time i went back home in 2017 was also after another previous 2 years and i was caught in reverse culture shock. One time i ate at a local street vendor, gave the finished plate back to the staff, and wiped the table with a tissue because well... It’s a common sense to leave things clean. Everyone was looking at me so weirdly.... 😨
Even my family thought that bringing tote bags for grocery is something unique because people still gets plastic bags for free.
But it’s not a bad thing. New places, new experiences. Can’t wait to be home again later after 2 years and get another reverse culture shock. ;)

Even though South India us much cleaner and developed I wanted to move out because in North India the rules are not followed and you will feel free. You could sleep on the streets no one would care, you could smoke a cigarette on the road side no one bats an eye you could do anything but eat beef. It’s like India where every state, region, & metropolitan area has a completely different culture, accent, history, climate, & look. New Mexico has a completely different culture than Texas. New York State is completely different from New York City which is completely different from NY’s Long Island way of life. North Florida is completely different from Central Florida & especially South Florida, even the climate goes from subtropical to tropical. You get the point

Drew -- I don't get to travel nearly as often as you do, but I recently visited Thailand and had an amazing time. Now I'm back in DC, and I feel somewhat out of place again. I've always felt that way in America, especially because I'm Iranian-American. Throughout my life, I've been told by fellow Americans that I'm NOT an American (I was born in Houston, come on), as if one's physical characteristics determine how American they are. I love living in DC, but it's very hard to relate to people here. Everyone is about themselves.
If you're ever in DC, please let me know!

Funny. I'm from Puerto Rico. Lived in New England, Canada, traveled Greece, lived in Israel, traveled Spain and then back to Puerto Rico and I felt so incredibly out of place there... But then after a few years something quite amazing happened, I started making friends that were also very unusual and with a story and I had some of the best memories of my life with them. Now I'm back to living abroad, but this time for good.
