    My son also crossed the North Sea from Norway, but to Aberdeen Scotland single handed in November. My heart was with him all the way, and he made the travel ok. This video is a good because a Mom wants go know. He didn't make one, but I'm glad you did. When you raise a sailor you never know where they will go. When he told me about this journey he wanted to do I was concerned about his safety but knew he had to do it.

    This is a fantastic video Erik. I honestly don't know which part earns you more respect: you taking on the mighty North Sea in January, or you choosing not to edit out the part where your Mum calls via the coastguard to check up on you. You could have easily edited that out to foster the hardman image, but you chose to be honest and keep that in there. That gets a ton of respect from me. The Shetland Islands and their inhabitants are brilliant, I've had some memorable (and some not so memorable...) nights out there! "Eple faller ikke langt fra stammen" and you are doing your Viking ancesters proud. Bring on the Faroes! Chris 👍👍

      @@erikaanderaa you should wear a lifeline, it's not just about your safety. An unmanned boat drifting into a shipping lane could kill innocent people, and you are making the Coast Guard go out and look for you now. Im from the puget sound area, climb onboard fast, you have 30ish minutes to get naked and dry off then start warming up. Take any longer to do these things you get hyperthermia.
      Drifting in the ocean with no line you have a few before your muscles stop working and you drown. That's what happened to the Titanic, they didn't freeze, you lose control of your muscles far before that and sink. Think of yourself and other boats.

    Total respect Erik.
    As someone who has worked offshore in the North Sea for 30 years. I've seen a few storms and as a sailor myself would never contemplate sailing in them. What you do is of the richter scale for respect.
    Brilliant video as always, shame about the drone but not much chance of flying her in those winds anyway.

      @@erikaanderaa If you keep going in that direction, Nuuk in Greenland is an amazing place to visit. I've been there on an offshore vessel and it's an unbelievable place. Imagine a capital city with no roads leading in or out, with Icebergs floating by and whales galore: that's Nuuk! We got a day of downtime when we were in port (you'll know how rare that is Erik...) so we climbed one of the snow-covered mountains which overlook the city in totally inadequate trainers. It's a long sail to get there, but you're a Viking, and it's worth it!... Chris

    I just cannot imagine the courage required to cross the North Sea in January, singlehanded in a sailboat. I've done it several times, but together with two or three companions, and in small motor vessels rather than sailboats. On my last trip I was so seasick I crawled into an empty bunk (mine was soaking wet due to the port having earlier been smashed in by the waves) to die. I honestly had reached the point where I just didn't care anymore. Thankfully one of my companions had many years experience as Chief Engineer on an ocean-going Salvage Tug and he guided us safely through the storm. If it had been just me, alone on a sailboat, I would have been eaten by the fishes years ago. You have my utmost admiration and respect.

    What an animal and big respect , I was working in that sector of the north sea in the oil industry on vessels and the maersk guardian and endeavour 3 pod jack ups as a rigger in all weathers up to 28 hour days mental and physical pain , so I understand what monster you took on single handedly ! You made me chuckle when you said your flying back and pick up the boat in the spring !!! It leaves a serious imprint on a mans soul you will never be able to fake or forget !!!!!! Well done pal !

    Impressive Erik. The real Spirit of Adventure!
    To those people suggesting attaching a lifeline. Think it through. The boat is doing 8 to 12 knots. And no-one aboard to slow/stop the boat. So you drown anyway, being towed under by your own boat. Not pleasant.
    Anyway, Erik is a Viking. He wont go under - he will go to Valhalla ofcourse!!

    Just wondering, being a solo sailor, would it be a good idea to tether yourself to the boat somehow in the event that you are tossed overboard from a freak wave at night or during the day?

    • @kastrioti4519
      @kastrioti4519 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Problem with that might be that if the boat sinks and you can't un-tether yourself in time, you go down with it.. Choices xD

    • @walkingmanvideo9455
      @walkingmanvideo9455 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kas ESO valid point. Perhaps he should carry and Emergency beacon in his jacket in case of overboard. I don’t doubt the sailors skills, but the open seas can bite back. Cheers from Australia.

      I'm nowhere near as experienced, but I would feel uncomfortable standing on the cockpit seats in a roiling windy sea without a short tether. You usually would only need them when going forward on deck. He knows best. But my starting point would be full exposure suit, Type I PFD, comms on my body and a cockpit tether. If he falls over as we see him, he very quickly drowns in such cold water.
