      You say: other religious group. I also say The president oppressed other “religious” groups, I mean that “religious” groups look like monks. Is it an ideal Buddhism doing self-immolation?. By the way, “The oppression” is the result that the communist expect, is last reaction on sequence of method of communist, last reaction to ruin regime. After, group of international investigating reports there is NO persecution on Buddhism or Buddhists. I believe that there always have reason to believe a man, or only image about a man. I am Vietnamese, I believe The president Ngo Dinh Diem, he is just like a hero.@@ok-ie7ux

    Here's what I want to clarify. Ngô Đình Diệm was not a bad man. He didn't persecute Buddhists. Those Buddhists were Communist advocates, sent by the Communist regime themselves to get burned, influencing Southern Buddhists. Diệm loved Buddhism. Because, it was our country's 10 century old religion. The press only wrote down the things they see. Even now, the CIA identified the real situation, and acknowledged that Diệm was indeed a good man. The US didn't know his tactics, they led him to fall, and the whole country fall with him. The South Vietnamese loved him as well. Even now, the Buddhists want him back. The communist regime is too bad. My grandfather and grandmother were Buddhists living in Sài Gon at that time. They weren't persecuted, they walked around freely, being normal citizens. The suicidal Buddhists were influenced by the Communist regime too much. The communist regime did everything they could so that Diệm could lose power. Indeed, this is how America was beaten by communism. Just to clarify again, I'm not taking sides lol. You can't take sides on a war because both did horrible things. I'm just another fellow Vietnamese-American.

      Funny how you say all this, in the UK history classes we are taught Diem was a dictator and a very corrupt person. Which in conclusion he is not a good person, he even got assassinated by his own people so I’m not sure what your South Vietnamese parents told you, a president who wants the richer to be richer and the poor to stay poorer for the country to fall into like China.

      You can't be misleading people here, I have visited all the Museums in HCMC and read all about it. Diem and his brother are strong Catholics persecuting Buddhism and he even betrayed Bao Dai who appointed him as President so that he can get rid of the French and help the Americans. If you go to the site where the monk set himself on fire, there is a monument there too showing Southern soldiers persecuting Buddhists monks. Don't blame the communists, they never betrayed Vietnam like Diem and soldiers in the south and the Uncle Ho and the communists brought Vietnam to independence. Vietnamese are all now thankful to Uncle Ho.

    • @Ma1q444
      @Ma1q444 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The original comment seems to gloss over some critical historical facts about Ngô Đình Diệm’s regime. While Diệm wasn’t universally despised and did have support from certain groups, his administration was marked by significant repression, particularly towards Buddhists. The claim that protesting Buddhists were just communist agitators doesn’t hold up; the Buddhist Crisis of 1963 was a genuine response to Diệm’s discriminatory policies. Although the Viet Cong did exploit this unrest, the grievances of the Buddhists were real and well-documented. The CIA and international press reported on these issues extensively, and Diệm’s increasing unpopularity was a key reason why the U.S. eventually withdrew its support.
      On the other hand, the response is more aligned with historical records. Diệm and his brother indeed showed favoritism towards Catholics and repressed Buddhists, which led to significant unrest and protests, including the infamous self-immolation of Thích Quảng Đức. Diệm did consolidate power at the expense of Bảo Đại, further fueling political instability. While the communists under Ho Chi Minh did lead Vietnam to independence from colonial rule, it’s important to remember that perspectives on these historical events can vary widely. Both comments reflect the complexities and varying viewpoints on Vietnam’s history, but the second one provides a more accurate representation of Diệm’s controversial rule.

      He assisted US to remove the French and the last Emperor.
      He was appointed by the last Emperor Bao Dao(who was appointed by the French) because both are Catholics and foreign powers wanted someone like him to persecute Buddhism. The American government had a hand in overthrowing Diem, although it was split on the matter. It quickly came to regret its actions. It was no involved in his murder.
      The primary conspirators, however, were ARVN officers. Diem had alienated South Vietnam's Buddhist majority through his persecution of them (Diem was Catholic) and his corruption. The famous photos of monks setting themselves on fire during the Vietnam War were taken during protests against Diem's rule.
