My mother's an aspiring writer. Her works are truly incredible, but we're not financially ready enough to publish them officially. I really want her stories to be published in hardcopies, and it breaks my heart to see even though we all want it so bad we unfortunately need to have more patience. So until that happens, I want to do something really special for her. That's why I'm here, trying to learn bits and bobs from this wonderful craftsmanship through as many tutorials as I can. Once I'm bit more confident, I shall print her stories one by one at home, and bind the pages together and try my best for it to look lovely and strong. And I'll give it to her, hopefully on her birthday this year in May! @@elkesorcery Unfortunately, so many things kept all of us so occupied throughout the last few months I didn't have much time to make the book :( But I have started working on editing the text on my laptop as I've noticed that the story I've chosen, mummy has not used many punctuations but rather wrote on using "...."💀😭 So I'm editing the whole text right now. Afterwards I'll either make the book from scratch (perhaps the original copy?🥺❤️) or I'll get them printed from a cyber cafe, then made into a book (we have a shop at my grandparents' locality where they've been binding and rebinding books since almost a century!😍❤️) I hope I can make it by Christmas, fingers crossed🥹❤️
I took bookbinding as an elective in college when I was training to be a jeweler. The sounds of the paper folding and the feel of a bone folder running over the seam can't be beat! Easily one of my favorite hobbies. You're obviously incredibly skilled at what you do, and that's lovely to see!
I have been waiting 11 years to find an answer as to how to honor my father’s letters, journals, diaries, “snippets” as he called his jottings. All found in an old suitcase after he passed, unknown to his children. He was a craftsman, like Dennis, and as sad as it is that he is not alive to go on this journey with me, I am able to labor in love a book such as what Dennis is making, I am not alone. Right now I am going through each video while taking notes. My sewing/craft room is cleared out completely of distractions, as I begin this exciting adventure. I hope others will follow me with their thoughts, and Dennis has promised to be there for me also. I cannot thank you enough for that! Life is good!
if its a one off book I'd recommend buying a handmade journal off eBay or Etsy instead, cheaper than the tools and supplies you'll need and you're supporting a small buisness, if its just for the experience though look for a local bookbinding class.

I like this one, too. Very simple, and easy to follow. It's the kind that of video that a person can just Watch and Do, right along with you. The fact that TH-cam (well, premium) has the option to slow down a video then I can pause it whenever I need to, in order to DO the step I am watching, I love it! So after watching all of your most recents I decided to go back and watch them all from the beginning (as I try to create my own little masterpieces, haha)! Thanks again!

I started making very small bound notebooks, as a way to keep my hands occupied and my mind focused during a stressful time, but I've always been afraid to venture into something as beautiful as this. Now I've been diagnosed with Stage 2 breast cancer, and while the prognosis is good so far, I'm learning that there's really not enough time to dither about getting into things. I am now going over this beautiful series again to start a project like this.

You are very skilled too so these without using clips to keep the pages from slipping. I am using recycled packing paper and it's a bit fluffy from wrinkles, and that may be why I'm having trouble wrestling with it. Some binding clips do help me and your video is super helpful. This is a wonderful meditative multi-step process. Oh, I see that I've been missing knots!
Thank you! You might try pressing your packing paper under some heavy weights for a few days to try to flatten out some of the wrinkles. I hope that helps!
Hi there, bit confused here sorry haha When you cut the large sheets into more manageable sizes you then fold them over but then after the 1st fold you turn them so that the fold is now at the top then fold them again. Doesn't that now leave you with a 2 layer page with a fold at the top? Sorry if I missed something I'm re-watching while I make a book following your videos. Thanks again! Stunning work!

After watching your video I recognised some of them (I am learning in the same way as your's), and learned practical tools. For example I have just bought an awl but it is a bit hard to use for me and it makes large holes. And now I am planning to buy a Punching Cradle :) Thank you for sharing these all. @@e8dazawk61 Ok I understood. As I know that wax is for agate burnisher to slip easily on marbling. Agate burnisher is used to make the marbling smoother, shinier and more protected. I don't know the wax he's using but we use regular solid soap for this purpose.
I think this is a traditional way of binding a book. I like it very much. I wanted to learn about it long time ago. Thank you so much for your tutorial clip. Step by step you slowly show everyone the way of stapling the quire of paper together. I wonder if you could possibly show me how to bind the quire one with the quire tow and so on. I would like to know how the quire one is bound with one another. I have some old book and I am sure I will rebound them soon in the way you show publicly. Thank you.

hello, what you put on the spine of the book along with the stitching is some kind of fabric? The same thing happens to me in part 2 of these videos, I don't know what materials you use. ps Excellent work, very admirable.
At about the 1 minute mark, when you are folding the signatures into their final size, there are two edges that are folded but not slit. Is one of them (the non-bound edge) slit later in video? I can't seem to see that. Thanks!

Wonderful video! Hopefully this will inspire people to pick this art up adn stop it dying out. Do you ever just put the whole block in a vice and cut the sewing holes or is there a reson you prefer the template?
Using a saw to make the holes is a valid method, though I find it can be hard to do neatly. If you saw too deep the cuts will show through on the inside. Thanks for the great question!
I did enjoy watching this however I found it a bit frustrating as a lot of the time I couldn't see what you were doing as your hand was in the way. I hope you don't mind a little criticism of an otherwise very beautiful video.
I couldn’t agree more! This was filmed without retakes and so the shots I got were what went into the video, and it’s hard to keep the hands out of the way with such work. But I’m more conscious of the video quality now, and will work on my filming techniques. I’m glad you found some enjoyment in the final result!

I saw your newest post and I wanted to get started but i would like to know what stitch you are using, I saw the other comment on it but when i looked it up they didn't look as sturdy or professional as yours, they also didn't include the thick string that went in-between the stitches, could you show a short video on how to do that please?

What if each signature contains only one folded sheet of paper? I'm making a lay-flat sketchbook using mixed media paper (160 GSM). In this case I assume I need a different sewing approach, right?
Yes, you'd want to take a different approach for such a book. Depending on what type of thread you are using for the sewing I'd watch for excessive swell along the spine, especially with just single page signatures of a heavy paper. A coptic stitch might be a good approach for you - I don't have a video for that style but there are lots on TH-cam. Thanks for watching!
I am in the process of binding my first book, but I'm reeeeally confused about sewing. I'm not using big sheets of paper, instead I only got access to typical A4 sized paper. I now just need to poke the holes and sew the folded sheets, now the question is the following: do you use a single, consistent thread throughout the entire process or do you only sew a couple of signature at a time and tied them together later? If the answer is the latter, how??

What if each signature contains only one folded sheet of paper? I'm making a lay-flat sketchbook using mixed media paper (160 GSM). In this case I assume I need a different sewing approach, right?
Yes, you'd want to take a different approach for such a book. Depending on what type of thread you are using for the sewing I'd watch for excessive swell along the spine, especially with just single page signatures of a heavy paper. A coptic stitch might be a good approach for you - I don't have a video for that style but there are lots on TH-cam. Thanks for watching!
@@FourKeysBookArts thank you. It ended up working very well. I used cotton sewing thread, doubled up and waxed. It's what I had at home.
I am in the process of binding my first book, but I'm reeeeally confused about sewing. I'm not using big sheets of paper, instead I only got access to typical A4 sized paper. I now just need to poke the holes and sew the folded sheets, now the question is the following: do you use a single, consistent thread throughout the entire process or do you only sew a couple of signature at a time and tied them together later? If the answer is the latter, how??
