I was devastated once I discovered hashtags wouldn't show recent posts anymore.. they were my go-to engagement strategy on insta, small creators and I would support and boost each other's posts- that way I was able to get thousands of views ONLY from hashtags. After that it would even make my post into ppls explore pages sometimes... :( R.I.P insta hashtags I miss u dearly
Instagram is such a sh*t place for artists and small creators because the algorithm constantly pushes them down. It’s hard for me to push through the algorithm and get views, likes and follows even with reels.
Instagram removing the most recent tab absolutely killed any reason for me to use it outside of posting for the few people that see my stuff. I have to use Twitter now since it's extremely easy to search for new or small artists. Being able to search by number of likes/comments really in helps finding underrated artists

I will stop using hastags then, it was my only hope for growth but I guess I'm back to my usual 2 likes per post and 16 follower views... and they didnt even work that well before that.
FRR a lot of fan art gets drown out by those stupid repost pages and meme pages so most resent post was where all the good stuff was 😭 now it’s gone and I suffer scrolling just to find an artwork I didn’t like 🥲
I mostly post my art on Instagram, and I’ve used it since 2015. And it’s so sad how down hill it’s gone. I feel like once TikTok became a thing, everyone wanted to copy it, and the community isn’t the same. It used to be so easy for me to find artists
It’s sad how crappy the algorithm has become. I used to get way more engagement on my posts than now but as of April 2023 the engagement has slowly kept getting worse and worse to the point where reels don’t even work for me either. But it isn’t all about numbers, I still draw for my personal enjoyment but that doesn’t change the fact that this stupid app exists and is so garbage literally.
Instagram’s CEO wanted to chase TikTok so he forced-reels onto everyone and then when people complained how Reels where being favored over pictures, he straight up doubled down on the awful changes to platform and straight up gaslit everyone. Watch the same fate happen to threads.
The CEO of instagram allegedly gaslit people on Threads not too long ago and honestly…I could care less about becoming famous or popular. I just wanted to share my artwork with everyone. I don’t wanna post every day. I don’t wanna make reels. I don’t wanna follow trends. I wanna make art.

Big reason why I deleted instagram was bc of the amount of hate comments and toxicity in general. I have a bad habit of looking through comments whenever I watch videos, mainly bc I’m interested in what ppl have to say most of the time, but I end up spending more time than I care to admit scrolling through literal wars in the comment sections and it ends up putting me in a bad mood lol. TH-cam comments are much more tamed than most social media platforms imo.

OH MY GOD, the hashtag not working part is sooo true, i stopped trying to grow my account because of that, i've been using that platform for years and got nowhere with it, so now i just use it as a "digital gallery" for my own enjoyment and archive for my art, it sucks but what else can you do
I've FINALLY found someone who can relate to my struggle. I've ben seeing all of these newer artist blow up due to their reels just getting attention by the algorithm and its really demotivating since I try to follow behind them or copy the same trend and can barely scrape 100 views. I've been stuck at 340 followers for damn near 3 years now and feel as if Instagram and its algorithm is just giving me the big'ol fuck you to my progress,hardwork/dedication,etc. I am so so sorry that you're experiencing this as well it sucks ass bro:( MAY WE BOTH GROW AND BECOME FAMOUS ART GODS!!!!!!!!

I don't have Instagram and I am partly glad I'm not in the Instagram community. According to my friends, the comments are always so toxic and the community is toxic as well
I feel like this is specifically true for instagram reels tbh, if you’re making regular photo posts then you’re (thankfully) less likely to come across the toxicity

Im so sad they removed the "most recent" post thing.. its actually impossible to gain followers if you are small and its also impossible to find new artists. I loved to go to recent and support smaller artists it was so much fun.
Social media for art has tons of problems no matter the platform but instagram is one of my least favorites. Tumblr is my go to atm lol.
I’m so glad Tumblr isn’t very awful. I literally left TikTok due to its toxicity only for Instagram to be just as bad if not worse.
But then I decided to check on Tumblr bc I heard it isn’t as bad as it used to, and honestly, it’s my favorite one so far. But I heard it was joining something AI related which left me like “Oh, come on, can’t I have something nice just for once?”
@@rutzo_zeth_r yeah it seems like every company is favoring ai rather that the users and people who made the sites what they are throughout the years. But yeah other than that Tumblr is way nicer than other sites especially it user base. I rarely ever see rude comments on blogs and people usually tend to have nicer viewpoints on things (at least on my side of Tumblr) which leads to a safer environment for artists unlike the trolls of Instagram and TikTok.
Tumblr is like, one of the chillest platforms I've seen by far. It's just people enjoying stuff and barely even commenting! Which can be a sad thing, but it is also good at the same time, as people avoid leaving toxicity
Though I have to say, it's weird how there is no popular platform dedicated to art specifically that acts similarly to social media. DeviantArt, seen by it's name, is not a very "safe" place to be, there is a lot of stuff going on, and even less interaction tbh. ArtStation is mostly for portfolios, professionals, art students, and it's more serious overall. And that's about all the platforms I know dedicated to art, and none of them are social media type of platforms. Everything else is just regular social media. And that is NOT a place where artists can share their art without getting a ton of toxicity and backlash, as well as the algorithms just being a mess in all of them

Just imagine the possibilities, quality of life, etc. of built in features dedicated just for artists by artists. I kinda don’t want to share ideas just in case shitty companies takes advantage of em. If I know how to code and stuff I would want to try doing it myself, but I’m dumb so :,)

the hate comments is definitely a universal thing on instagram, cos i've seen it happen outside of the art circle too. one time i was watching a very innocent reel of a lady making a cool sand sculpture on the beach (she said it was her job) and thought it was awesome. opened to comments expecting similar thoughts only to find the most vile, condescending, aggressive and frankly misogynistic comments. all that over a sand sculpture, jfc. it wasn't even slightly polarizing reel-people just love to hate. makes you doubt whether there's decency in humans left in the world ;-;

I created an art account few months ago and only got 3 bots followers and barely any like or view. I will keep on drawing and posting no matter what. Don't give up on art and never stop doing what you love to do!

Social media is just bad in general. The haters are insane.
That's one of the reason as to why Tumblr is my go to website to post my fanart. It doesn't have an algorithm that'll screw you over and it promotes people to reblog and scroll all the way down. You can also see how many people follow a fandom tag to keep up to date with art or other content. I love the engagement over there.

Was gonna comment on this, absolutely, Insta was miles better back then before Zuckerberg messed it up. Now AI bros dominate the algorithm and it's a massive playground for the worst society has to offer, just like Twitter now.

The hate comments thing is real. If you don't like something,just scroll. You don't have to spread your negativity because YOU have a different opinion on that matter.

The funniest thing about hate comments is the fact that the people complaining haven't even done proper research on the thing they are hating on or in this situation, probably haven't picked up a pencil since the 3rd grade

So glad I gave up on Instagram. I usually get 5-7 likes from the same group of people, and while I heavily appreciate them, I kinda wonder what happened to the other 80% of my followers. I also dislike how often I have to post just so I can get more engagement.

Imo the last of your points is due to then changing the hashtag function. You no longer can filter to the most recent posts. This is how many non follower found my stuff before. Now small creators who do not get enough engagement from their small following have no chance to even show up there 😅

I've been facing a major problem while posting my art on Instagram recently. Despite having only 5 followers, I was only able to get 2 to 5 likes on my posts. It's been almost a month since I opened my account, but I haven't received any engagement, likes, or followers. Even though I've tried putting hashtags like other artists and placing them on the first comment, I haven't received any likes. However, I have received a few views on my posts, but not on my reels. I also haven't received any comments since I opened my account. As an artist, I can feel the disappointment of not being liked socially. However, you motivated me by saying that numbers can't define whether I'm a good or bad artist. Thank you so much
Do not worry. It is not your fault. I get compliments about my art irl, but get barely any likes on instagram. And I am starting to think that small account artists are less occupied by haters. You know, more fans, more haters...

Instagram makes it really difficult to find new art too. They mostly just choose for you what they want you to see which make it harder for newer people to be.

I feel like since they got rid of the most recent option when looking at a hashtag page its become so hard to get exposure and/or find other small artists. Also, as I gained more followers the engagement on my art has gone down so much :( make it make sense 🤡
If you create fanart I can really recommend tumblr, it works much better for me at the moment
Another problem is how Instagram offers you to list the hashtags you don't want to see (like AI or pimple popping) and it keeps showing you exactly these things anyway. That baffles me as I voluntarily tell the algorithm how it can improve my experience and it chooses to reduce my engagement by making the app worse for me.

Im glad i dont have instagram, MY FAVORITE ARTIST YT JUST GOT HACKED FROM A FLORIDA MAN NOOOO NIAN!! But scams are a big thing with instagram (based off of videos ive seen)
To make the quality ”better” in Instagram is to import media like videos and photos in quality that Instagram will show it (for example photos is suggested to be 1080x1080) and posted in JPEG form, then ur app of choice will make better quality of the compression and u wont rely on Instagram compression 😊 fyi reels is 1920x1080, i recommend editing the video to said resolution in CapCut, premiere etc. Same with photos. Hope this helped.
I actually used to be an instagram artist back in lockdown. I had a decent following (not over 100k but it was still a lot with a lot of my posts reaching massive amounts of engagement) and it was a lot of fun until the algorithm changed massively. Then drawing became more of a chore to keep up with algorithm and draw things that were relevant rather than the things I wanted to which definitely made me spiral into the numbers = art worth mentality. I left instagram however around 2 or 3 years ago now and did not draw at all until a few months ago. Now i just draw for myself and don't post any of it social media and it's so much more freeing.
I was looking back at a few of my favourite artists from that time and a lot of people seem to have left the platform too. I don't really know how the community is nowadays but it's interesting to hear that it still has the same stupid algorithm and bot comments that it had 2 years ago. I'm glad there still is a community there and I hope it improves for artists at some point because artists deserve a good platform to showcase their talents.

That's true now but it didn't use to be. Years ago I was able to gain followers on instagram and my art wasn't even good. I became inactive and made a new account and I could still gain some followers. Now, my art is better and I can't gain a single follower even when I make fanart.
@@suu1998 This is sadly really relatable. I got my first account there in 2016 to start publicizing my art more. Not long ago I logged back into that account and was floored that my old, not very good art got up to 100+ likes. But my new account - with MUCH higher quality work - has only recently gone from 30 likes/post to 50/post in the past couple years. Other peoples' quick doodles on lined school paper get 70+ likes, and take off with comments. I may get a comment here or there but it isn't mindblowing by any means. I had tried Tumblr, too, but between the theft, the toxicity, and the 3 likes per post, it wasn't worth sticking around there
@@suu1998I have exactly the same situation and I think I know why this happened. Instagram removed the ability to see recent posts. A lot of users would search for whatever they wanted to see, look at the recent posts, and see what was posted even by small accounts. Now, however, it doesn't really matter how good one's art is. There is no way for users to ever see your art unless Instagram algorithm decides to actually show it to someone.
@@suu1998 yeah, same thing with TH-cam. Speedpaints used to be very popular, but bc of all the changes to the algorithm most of them tank in views :/ I'm hoping Cara (new artist social media) will be a good platform for artists.

So glad that I found this video. I’m kind of giving up posting art on Instagram. It has been stuck with the same numbers for months. Surprisingly, some of my friends messaged me and asked if I have deleted my account because they never see my posts 😅 when I post new artwork, I lost followers. Even though like you said, numbers are not important, but it does affect my human heart a bit😂

Comparing instagram and Pinterest is insane because people on Pinterest is super nice. But yeah i have heard instagram is super toxic I have even and the bots are super annoying I would go into the comments of a posts and all I see is bots I would literally have to stroll to the bottom to find a living breathing person

This is so true! I don't post my art as much, I post more about books, but I follow a lot of artists, and these scam messages are a problem! Even I get those scam messages as well. And AI is sooo awful on instagram, and they're everywhere 😭

Also totally agree on reels. I’ve tried so many approaches and honestly I don't care anymore. My issue is that nobody would watch a reel for the art itself. If it can only be flashed for less than a second at the end then what is even the point?🤷♂️
Fr I don't know when reels started trending on IG 'cause I ACTIVELY avoid them when I see the little video icon in the corner. If I wanted to watch vertical videos with endless scrolling I'd go on TikTok
The algorithm issue is genuinely SO BAD. Getting barely any engagement and reaching nobody new for MONTHS is genuinely the most discouraging thing and I’ve had to force myself to take a break from the app just to keep myself from spiraling into that “the numbers are bad guess that means my art is bad” mindset anymore than I already have. This is so real my engagement has been so bad in the past few weeks. I had a very popular reel (more than 800k views) but all of my other posts after that reel keep getting less and less engagement :(
There’s nothing I hate more than posting my art on Instagram only to find out that it diminishes the quality. It’s seriously so frustrating.

Yeah I started a new instagram account to show my art and I realized how little engagement I get whether reels or regular posts
Instagram just seems to be removing any method small artists (or small accounts in general) could use to gain some reach and engagement. Removing the most recent feature is so pathetic.
I've been in the editing community on Instagram for some years now and I gotta say, it really isn't what it was. It's still fun, but like you said... with the reels, it's a sort of love/hate relationship. It's good for anything but edits and art in my opinion, but then, just leave that to Tik Tok tbh. I love making art too and I have some art friends there, I'm thinking about making an account for art, since I haven't had much editing motivation in the last few months. I'd mostly do it for friends and I prefer them over many followers and growth, tho it really sucks that the opportunity just... sorta vanished. It's so hard to grow as an artist on any social media bcs the algorithms really make it almost impossible.

The number 4: Hashtag issue is definitely the bigest problem for me. I used to always search for whatever I wanted to see and looked at the recent posts. Also, years ago, when I just learned to paint, I used to post my paintings and despite the bad quality of my art, I would get 20-50 likes which meant to me that a lot of users were seeing my art and just a very small percentage would like them. Now, years later, my art is much better, but noone besides my friends leaves likes which means that probably almost noone sees my art. The users can't decide if they want to see posts by small accounts through the recent post search. Now the algorhythm decides if users ever see your posts.
I lost hope with posting on Instagram ever since they got rid of recent posts on hashtags and immediately left that platform. I also hate how instagram reels' comments is as hostile as twitter's, maybe worse too because I've never seen people besides on tiktok and now, Instagram reels make fun of artists.
Me and my bestie (mostly her) Posts art on instagram, I've seen a lot of things like this on her account whenever I'm looking for a new post. I'll 100% share this with her!
You forgot one important point of why hate Instagram. THE FACT THAT YOU HAVE TO ABSOLUTELY ADAPT TO HIS FORMAT BECAUSE IF NOT, THE APP JUST CUT PART OF THE PICTURE!!
I literally have to edit some drawing for EXCLUSIVELY being post on Instagram. Kinnda awful that you can't post it from your computer if you want to add music for "generate atachment" or something

The 4k is the resolution of the video you filmed at (usually 3840 x 2160 pixels) and 60 fps is frames per second, how many pictures is made in a second to make it into a video.
Instagram (and other media sharing sites) will most likely take that file and try to reduce the size of it (most likely reducing the resolution) which will make the video blurry.
For reels try 1080p (1080 x 1920 pixels) as a resolution for filming . Fps can be at 60.
Someone likely mentioned optimizing already, but save a copy of the file at the same resolution as what ig presents (1080) as the version to upload. It does not have to be resized so there is less chance of it getting goofed up getting re processed and it’s faster all around.

I relate heavily on not having the bandwidth to create a video idea for my illustrations. To get attention, you have to be creative in how you film an edit videos. (Thinking of trending audios, edit transitions, etc…) When I just finished an art piece that took 40 hours, I’m not trynna think about all that.
This is so true as an instagram artist myself. I actually use instagram as my portfolio and make friend with people who have same interest like me. Sadly so many artists only care about how many followers they have insted of doing thair art.

the only thing I can add here is: pls check your export settings for reels and pictures again. there are cheat sheets for IG out there, because you are absolutely right, their compression is utter garbage, but just a few simple settings can make it SO SOOO much worse!! and it shouldn't be! seriously, the app should make it possible to always get the best possible quality with default settings, buuut nope! I struggled with that when I worked for clients in food photography. it's a mess! but it's not your fault.

I also noticed lots of scammers trying to hook you by asking if you’re available for commissions and then asking for your banking/card or payment info straight away , probably just to take your money (or at least I think that’s the reason) .. has happened to me often, people with noticeably fake accounts who aren’t even following or liking your art😅

Aside from that, I agree with everything. The bots are annoying as hell, the algorithm really sucks, and scams are everywhere! It's a problem that only seems to be getting worse. My motivation to draw has been very low these past few weeks, and I'm paying the price by losing engagement. I complained about it on a post on Threads that was discussing this exact issue, that no matter how hard you work, you won't get engagement unless you pretty much revolve your life around creating content. It's infuriating.

Absolutely true and I don't know if Instagram does this but TikTok apparently (not sure but I hear from the art community) that the algorithm kills views on videos that don't include a real face in it. Not sure how true that is but the art community on tiktok is a huge gap between barely-any-views artists vs. millions of views artists. Instagram is so annoying like I have been on it for years and my account, DESPITE trying engaging videos and following trends and posting daily, it just doesn't work.. I legit don't understand how else to get views for posting my art and products.
Regarding that hate comment thing... that's something I never understood and will never understand (and most probably don't want to understand). Just like you said: If you don't like/hate something why spend (or in this case rather "waste") some extra moments of your precious time and comment on it? I hope this is one of the "fascinating" things only the internet has to offer. Hopefully those people won't stop by a random seller at a market or trade fair who sells one of those fancy high-end potato peelers just to tell them using that thing would be cheating and they just created that thing because they are too stupid to peel potatoes "the right way" 🤨

Something that annoyed me a lot on instagram is Ai accounts in general. Not just the fact that they scam you with brushes, but their existence. Whenever I find an AI account I instantly report it, even though it's kind of "legal" what they post. Most AI accounts I find are the ones who do not say they are artists in their name or bio, but imo, they are posting something that is not theirs.
Of course, whenever I report it, instagram doesn't do anything about it, because it's not illegal ig.

Instagram compress your content so it can be easily uploaded to their severs if I'm not mistaken.
(60 FPS meaning you're shooting at a high frame rate, usually meant for slow mo. You can just shoot at 30FPS.)

Another problem I've frequently come across is shadow banning/posts not showing up for anyone. Since you can't see recent posts anymore it's gotten difficult to tell if you've been shadow banned.
I made an instagram when i decided to take learning and posting art much more seriously a couple weeks ago or last month or something, and i knew it wasn't for me when i made my first post and immediately got followed by like 15 bots. Like, nah, I'll take my few followers on every other social media platform over that
