- A Day in the Life of a Deck Cadet
PLUS bonus footage of dolphins jumping in the bow wave at the end.
In this Video I give you a basic introduction to life at sea through my eyes as a deck cadet on a ship. I show you an average day as a cadet from the time I wake up in the morning to the time I finish work as the sun sets. I show you the kind of work we do at sea on deck as well as from the navigation bridge.
To become a navigating officer on a ship, you must first sail for 18 months as a Deck Cadet or for 9 months as an Engine Cadet if you want to become a Marine Engineer.
As I have finished my time as a Cadet & I am waiting for a promotion to 3rd officer, this is my last opportunity to showcase life as a cadet. Whilst the exact work hours and jobs of a cadet will vary from ship to ship, I want to share my general perspective of life as a cadet.

Hello from a russian cadet.
In order to be an officer, one should know minor jobs in order to deliver commands properly. Simply because you know how much time those jobs require and no one can say that they are hard or to much time consuming.

Hi Bogdan. The formula is reasonably simple. Best thing to do is ask your chief officer to teach you. This way you will get a full understanding of what it is exactly that you are doing. This will show your chief that you are interested and he will endeavour to teach you more

How can I apply as a cadet in your vessel?
Can you tell me why you have to use the manual gyroscope and all that when there a cpu that caan do it for you? Or is it just part of studying to becoming 3rd mate. Im going as a cadet in 6 months as well
Hi Killforgood1023. We use the gyrocompass as it is a highly accurate tool for seeking true north. It is an entirely independent piece of equipment and is not influenced by any external forces. The calculation that we use can be achieved by manual calculation or by calculator and computer. I prefer to do this calculation manually as I can be sure that it is accurate. We take a sight of a celestial or terrestrial object to ensure that the gyrocompass has no, or little error. If the error increases more than about half a degree, we must get a technician on board to repair this vital navigation equipment.

Hi mate. The captain makes it a requirement to take compass error every watch and on every new heading. This is because the deviation changes on every heading and the variation changes on ships location so it is always variable and somewhat unknown. I prefer to keep my videos entertaining for now, for any educational videos on any subjects, i recommend heading to my friends channel "Steering Mariners". He is very qualified and a very good teacher.

The salary of a cadet is the lowest of all the crew on the ship. It is not enormous but it is sufficient to get by until you become a qualified navigating officer.
does glasses tollerated for a deck officer? What about the binocul usage?
Hi Alex. You can wear glasses as a deck officer. You must pass an eyesight test in your seafarer medical exam and if you need to wear glasses for that, then you will be required to wear glasses when working on the navigation bridge. The only thing is, that if you are colour blind, you will not be able to be a deck officer. If this is the case, its still a great career to become a marine engineer officer

Hello. I'm about to start my first cadetship onboard a Asphalt/Bitumen tanker and i am bit concerned with my academic knowledge, since it's been a long wait (
''If You Don't Use It, You'll Lose It'' kind of thing).
Should i be concerned too much since i have some holes in my academic knowledge? Some say it's not a problem, since it's a profession that can only be learned properly once onboard...some say i should revise some parts in case there is a hard-ass chief that will be knowledge checking me 24/7.
Any input would be apreciated.
Hi MrVux007. You should not worry about any holes you may think you have in your knowledge. Remember as a cadet you are there to learn, not to be tested. Any time you are unsure of something on board, you should always ask a senior officer. The more you ask and learn, the more they will be able to trust that you will become a valuable officer in the future. Enjoy your time on board.
As a deck cadet, which books should I carry onboard while joining a ship for first time...???
Hi Suraj. The best book you can take with you as a cadet is a notebook. As you are joining a ship for the first time, you will find it to be an overwhelming experience and all you want to do is learn. All the knowledge you need will be on board in the form of nautical publications, IMO conventions and from the experience of the crew on board. I hope you enjoy your first contract.

How much spare time do you usually have between works
Hi just a guy 64. It will vary from ship to ship but normally you will find yourself working between 8 and 12 hour days. Anything more than this and you should definitely be consulting the STCW Code on minimum hours of rest.

Hi Kaushik. The hardest part is finding a company to take you on so you have done well already and obviously impressed someone by your positive attitude. Every company is good for cadets. Make sure to show your keen interest to the Chief Officer and show an interest in learning. Be proactive, listen to the safety advice and always put your own safety first. You will do well. Enjoy 😁

how much free time do you have in a daily basis?
Plenty!! Due to MLC, we rarely work more than 12 hours a day. Most days we work about 10 hours 😀

My first day on my first ship was amazing. Really nice crew, all wanted to teach me everything they could. But your first day will be safety induction. Show you where all the life saving appliances are and where all the fire fighting equipment is. Where is the closest fire extinguisher to your cabin, where you can find your life-jacket and immersion suit in your cabin. Shortest route from your cabin to muster station. Emergency signals. Fire alarm, general alarm, prepare to abandon ship alarm. What to do in an emergency. And then they will give you time to rest as you may have travelled a long way to get there.

Hi Vishesh. Can you please clarify what is a DNS course? That way I can help to steer you in the right direction. If in doubt, best thing to do is contact your local Maritime College.

Hi Vikash. Getting a sponsorship with a company is always a challenging. Trying to convince a company that they need you, when really, you need them. Best to put together a list of all the companies you can think of and get a contact detail for each and make a phone call to all of them once a week asking if they are taking cadets. Showing them your persistence is the best bet towards impressing them enough to take you on.

Hi Ardian. Fabulous to hear that you want to join the industry. I think its the best job in the world. Best thing to do is contact your local maritime college. Im not too sure about the maritime college in Indonesia. If not, then would be worth your time contacting UK Maritime Academy or Australian Maritime College. Both are fantastic institutions to gain your maritime training and qualifications from both are recognised around the world.
What about autonomous ships ....are jobs at risk ??
With the costs involved with Autonomous ships, and the number of shipping companies around the world that run on shoestring budgets, it is unlikely that autonomous ships will have any impact on jobs of seafarers for at least the next 50 year, by which time I hope to have retired. There are so many concerns that come with Autonomous ships like how to arrange mooring opperations with no crew on board, how to effectively manage months worth of maintenance during the short port visits, etc. Good question. Hi Marcin. I am 23 years old. If you want to work on a ship, you should contact your local maritime college and enquire as to how you can become a seafarer. Usually takes about 3 to 5 years of study to become a junior officer.

Definitely. As you increase your rank, so does your salary. Obviously the rate is dependent upon the value of the cargo also. Ships transporting high value cargo often pay the crew better than ships transporting low value cargo.

Hi Rapsyyy. Cadet salary is always the lowest of all crew on board. This makes sense since the cadet is the least qualified and has the least experience. As your qualifications and experience increase, so does your salary
