I think that Derek is the kind of guy that because of everything that has happened in his life he has closed himself off to the world-however when he loves someone-when he falls in love he does it so completely that when the one he loves gets hurt or betrays him he is destroyed- Like Peter said, Derek was once like Scott, the type of person who believes that everyone is inherently good, I think that Derek just wants to believe that again, he wants to trust people again.

I love how he was willing to give up being an Alpha to save his little sister. He didn't even know if it would work but he did it anyway
