      I would have to highly disagree with you. She is a great talker, and very calm, but the tornado coverage was very amateur. She was constantly getting the tornado track wrong, and warning the wrong areas.

    I’ve been on a tornado coverage binge lately, but it’s been mostly tornado alley videos. Tonight, I thought ‘hey, I’ll see if they have coverage of the 2020 Nashville one’, but what I wasn’t prepared for was to relive all the terrifying emotions I felt that night all over again. It’s different when you actually experienced the fear and witnessed the destruction vs watching some tornado in a field in Oklahoma. I remember watching this live and frantically calling all my East Nashville friends to make sure they were okay. We had all JUST been at Rosemary’s getting after work cocktails but thankfully, we decided to head home after I got a warning notification on my weather app. The storm hit 20 minutes later. I can’t begin to imagine what could’ve happened to us if we had stayed. We went down the next day to help clear up debris at the cafe I worked at that had been hit and it was so insanely surreal. I felt like I was in a movie. The destruction was so much worse than I thought. I’ve never felt fear like I did that night and I hope I never do again. The biggest of kudos to Bree, Lelan, and Henry who helped saved lives that night and continue to be absolute badasses.
    Moral of the story: listen to your local meteorologists and always always always be weather aware!

    What gets me, even more than seeing the hook already forming before it was warned, the same hook I pointed out to my friend from our dorm basement, is the fact that not even a minute after the warning hit they were putting a track starting from the airport (one of the first places badly hit) and not even a minute after that they had power flashes ON SCREEN.
    Two minutes. From warning to what would later be confirmed tornado damage. That's how unpredictable these storms are still, after decades of research.
    Two. Minutes.

    • @waynebeckham3807
      @waynebeckham3807 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The average lead time is only 8-15 minutes on average for tornadoes that are moving 30-40mph.. That is not good enough. This storm was racing at 50mph...that means you had less than 6 minutes if you were watching...not good and deadly. This is why research is so important!

    Every now and then I rewatch this stream over and over again. Coming from someone who watches Ryan Hall, Y'all's livestreams, I gotta say, Bree saved many lives on that night. Unlike other local news stations that would have taken this tornado lightly, she took this tornado extremely serious all while making viewers understand the severity of the storm. Shame on our NWS for not issuing a tornado emergency that night. I had RadarOmega on my pc and was just getting used to it and as the tornado was moving through Hermitage, I was very concerned on how strong it was. The structure of the cell was what you could consider borderline perfect for spotting tornadoes. Bree deserves a lot of credit for saving numerous lives that night.

    I lived on Bobby Ave in the Dalewood area back then. The ironic part is I am a major weather nerd and had tracked this storm during the earlier part of the day and given up after a awhile because it had quietened down.
    Well imagine my surprise when I was at the store grabbing some beers and got the tornado warning on my phone. I pulled up the radar and sped back home.
    It was so quiet, dead calm, but I stood on our front stoop and looked towards five points a few miles south and I saw green flashes of lightning through the hail core and blue power flashes from the ground happening simultaneously.
    I woke my dad up and told him to get in the basement. His ornery ass decides to turn on the news instead 😅 Suffice to say, I’ll never forget it. If you can take ethereal, surreal, eerie, and terrifying and roll them all together that’s what it felt like watching this beast churn straight through town.

      What is it with our parents? I can remember the 1965 tornado outbreak in Minneapolis/St. Paul. We lost power early on, and my dad took our transistor radio out on the back step IN THE MIDDLE OF CONTINUOUS LIGHTNING because he thought he could get better AM reception (he couldn't). It's a shock as a kid to learn that your father might be an idiot!

    30,000 ft is not very tall for a supercell! But this is early March so maybe high for that time of year in that area! I have seen supercells reach 70,000 ft in my area! They become very scary at that height, lots of lightning and flooding is a sure thing with supercells that tall!

    • @Marios_WX
      @Marios_WX 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      30KFT was decently high for the area and for the time of year, especially for the environment. It's insane how rooted that supercell was.

    • @Gail1Marie
      @Gail1Marie 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      During the May 6, 1965 tornado outbreak in the Twin Cities, the weather service estimated the supercells reached 90,000 feet. At the height of the storm, the lightning was so continuous you could've read a book by it. I can remember later storms that were so tall that--an hour after sunset--the tops were still lit by the sun.

    I'll repeat what I stated on another TH-cam channel.
    Looking back at numerous comments over the past couple of years, I find it disheartening that some have labeled WSMV as a failure. In my opinion, FOX17 Nashville was the least impressive, while NewsChannel 5 was decent, ranking second in coverage. WKRN comes in at third place, mainly due to a moment where they tracked the tornado heading north instead of east. WSMV, on the other hand, stood out for accurate coverage during a challenging time. I experienced the events firsthand, and I must commend WSMV for their impeccable reporting. The advice to remain calm and seek shelter resonates with me; turning up the TV volume can be nerve-wracking, but it helps ensure safety.
    Regarding NewsChannel 5's coverage, the first portion of their video captures the tornado exceptionally well. However, the context for the second part of the video is crucial. It's incorrect to state that the tornado directly hit the news station; it was at least half a mile north. Despite taking a power hit, the station's generators kicked in, keeping them on air at reduced capacity.
    I can attest to these events personally. I was homeless at the time, living under the Jefferson Street Bridge next to the food stamp office. The tornado hit the food stamp office, Riverfront Apartments, and the bridge. Our tent, along with most belongings, was lost, and my husband and I narrowly escaped being thrown into the Cumberland River. Can you imagine debris flying directly over your head and nearly hitting you? No? However, that's exactly what happened.
    There were people in our camp crying for help because debris hit them, or they were trapped in their tents. Once we got out from what was left our tent, my husband and two other guys from our camp, went over to the part of the Riverfront Apartments that were hit. There were residents who were trapped on the upper floors. People from the IMT Germantown apartments also came over to assist as best they could. Fire and Rescue responded within a matter at least 5 minutes following the tornado, along police. By the way, there were security guards on the clock at the old food stamp office when the tornado hit. All of them survived.
    The rest of that night and into the next day was unforgettable, with no sleep for almost 42 hours. I had been up at 6:00 a.m. on March 2. I didn't get to sleep until around 11:00 p.m. on March 3.
    Despite the ordeal, we survived an EF-3 tornado under the bridge, though I wouldn't recommend it. Now with a permanent roof over our heads in Hermitage, thanks to the Salvation Army, I'm grateful for increased weather awareness. For those interested, I recommend downloading WSMV's First Alert weather app, rated No. 1 in Middle Tennessee by Weather Rate since March 3, 2020.
    Additionally, for tracking storms, the RadarOmega app and desktop program is one of the best for tracking storms in your area. For only $8.99, you can try it out today! Have a desktop computer? Add the Alpha Tier for an additional $11.99 per month, and get more features available only for Alpha subscribers. You can also use the app on your phone when you're on the go. It's RadarOmega.
