    I always liked this scene because it's a very human one. It's very humanising of his character and puts these things in perspective. It's a sobering thought

    One of my favorite scenes from this flick. Leave it to fiction to put a conscience on the American military/political machine, because in real life, it's just one mess after another and the worst part of it: most of the government simply doesn't care and the ones who do care, are quickly silenced in order to not disrupt the ways of the establishment.

    A president with a conscience. When I first watched this movie, I thought, "Now this is a president. We need men and women like him in the Oval Office. People who consider all the angles, not just the ones that get them elected." Now this is the epitome of character.

    We argue amongst ourselves about political parties everyday. But this scene truly defines who Presidents are. The decisions they make even if for the greater good, they still impact those we don't see but each president knows of when in briefing.

      So true. This movie was kind of a prequel to west wing tv series. Episode was “a proportional response”.., they used that line in previous scene in movie. Plane was shot down on west wing and young medical officer who was gonna be president Bartlett’s doctor was onboard. He was furious n had to be talked down by Leo mcgarry. Even Martin sheen in this movie and some future west Wing tv stars. Anna deveare-smith was press secretary in this movie and was national security advisor on west wing 👍

    • @ReaverLordTonus

      Wrong, the Janitor is doing his job and trying to support whatever family he has where he lives. This movie portrays a president who acknowledges that he probably just killed several innocent people with a single order in order to make his nation safe. He acknowledges that when he meets his maker he'll have to answer for that.

    I agree with him whole heartedly. If the idea was retaliation for the attack on Americans in Israel, then the American bombing should have been in the middle of the day, when the men who planned said attack would be in the building, not at home asleep in their beds while said janitor dies.

    • @drmayeda1930
      @drmayeda1930 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Middle of the day, it's easier to see the aircraft coming in and shoot at it with firearms like rifles and handguns. The people they were after would run.

    • @timothygalvin3021
      @timothygalvin3021 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@drmayeda1930 true true, but a B52 flys at 34000 feet. The human eye really can't see a plane flyijg above 32000 feet. However, you are correct that the actual targets would run away. However I think it sends a more powerful message to a fictional Iranian leader to have to flee their headquarters than to be asleep in his bed when said headquarters is destroyed.

    • @einsteinboricua
      @einsteinboricua 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The point of the attack wasn't to kill people; it was to cripple their intelligence capability. If there's a mix of civilians at that building when military personnel are present, such an attack could be considered a crime against humanity (you'd be targeting the building for its people rather than its functions). That's why he attacked at night: to minimize casualties.

    • @broadstreet21

    Wait - this doesn’t make sense. Making that call to strike the embassy is the precisely the kind of decision that a president is elected to make! Why else would you need a commander in chief if the commander thinks making a military decision is NOT presidential!? You can say you make a bad decision vs a good decision but as President, you can’t opt out of making a call like that. Stupid line

      I guess it depends on perspective. If I were in his shoes, I would have a terrible sense of guilt in making that call, knowing it was going to kill other human beings. I would make the call if necessary, but I would consider it more necessary than Presidential.
