  • Along the Indian East Coast, unique custom made three wheelers are very often seen, and luckily I could get some of the riders including their vehicles this time in front of my cam.
    Using an original Bajaj Scooter (Chetak) engine - a 2-stroke air cooled 125 or 150 ccm single cylinder motor with gear box - and other Bajaj scooter parts such as tank and carburetor, gas and gear shifting handles etc., plus any motorbike's front fork, and a handmade frame and some wheels, springs and so on, such trikes are manufactured to order by local workshops in Chennai. The trike runs with 1 liter of petrol mix up to 25 kms, at a top speed of more than 50 km per hour, and transports easily 1 ton. As the owner of the last one told, it costs You 50.000 Indian Rupees - that's currently approx. 750 Euros, or 1100 US Dollars. Not too bad, isn't it?
    Sound: the basic background sound is played by a Tamilian wedding music live band (I did not understand their name), recorded during a ceremony near Marrakanam - sound partially "slightly remixed" by bangalorebobbel ... ;-)

    tnx, since many years I wanted to catch some of them, but now only I got the time and the chance to do ...
    concerning differential: as far as I understood this construction, there is no differential ... that big clump in the middle of the axle next to the gear wheel seems to be the rear brake ... but I guess this is even better for them, so they don't need a differential lock, what would be highly recommended to use at least on some of those roads ... ;-)))

    @Rohanrk55 yes there seem to be some alternatives on the roads, some time back I made a video about trikes which were less stabile, more kind of bicycle frame etc., and seem to be driven by a TVS moped engine ... it was in the same area, and they were moving only, but I saw them never again and so far I could not see one standing or ask somebody for details ;-(
    I love such constructions - everybody talks about energy saving and low cost vehicles of the future, but they exist already!

    oh yes that is a must - I guess normal front ones could never deal with such loads ... one ton capacity officially, means they may load even more ... ;-)
    It is really a remarkable construction ...
    I really love threewheelers ... did You know: even the first car, the "Benz Patent-Motorwagen", was a threewheeler only? (And the first driver on a long distance road trip was the inventor's wife Bertha Benz, who took the car without his knowlede for a travel to her native ... ;-)

    I think they use rear shocks in the front....

    That was really cool.
    I wonder how the differential works with the gear on the rear axle.
    Maybe a ratchet action on one side?

    well, no idea, but never I have noticed anything like a registration number on one of those trikes ... ;-)
    I don't know such vehicles from other places in the South, seems to be a local speciality - so far I found them only in Tamil Nadu, in an area from Chennai down to Pondy and westwards upto Tindivanam or Kanchi.

      No, there was a trike at Kallissery/Othera in Alappuzha District in Kerala State in India, owned by M/s Veeners and Laminations Pvt. Ltd (manufactures of teakwood veeners) with front fork of Bullet motor cycle and custom made back side frame and plat form for 2 rear wheels and its engine was that of diesel bullet (may be kirloskar diesel engine) which makes high sound and was used for transporting materials for the factory. Don't know whether it has Reg No. with RTO. They have given the vehicle to KSEB to transport KSEB Line staff for early restoration of electric power supply to their factory at Othera during those days without waiting for departmental vehicle. I saw an article in internet years ago, saying that such trikes will give more mileage than their 2 wheeler sibling. If so, we can convert Maruthi 800 car with engine of Enfield Intercepter 650 cc which may give same power with twin cylinder rather than the original 3 cylinder and it may give more mileage perhaps with chain drive.

      @@t.p.visweswarasharma6738 mmmm don't really understand why such home made trikes with higher weights, roll resistance, air resistance etc. should consume less fuel than factory optimized and standardised motorcycles, anyhow I miss the physics behind ... but ok I met often people who told me highly coloured stories about their vehicle's mileage or the time it takes them to come from A to B, and all such fairy tales ... 😁
      That said, I guess if you replace - in whatever vehicle it might be - any age old engine from last century with a modern engine (of similar horse powers) you might surely get better mileage, simply because today's engines are highly customized and focused on less pollution and higher mileage. But whether modern engines then have same life time, repair friendliness (also concerning costs and availability of spares) and so on is written on another piece of paper ... 😉

    Oder halt den "Ooty Bridegroom" auf TH-cam suchen, am besten gleich mit diesen Anführungszeichen. Der Titel ist offensichtlich einzigartig. ;-)

      as far as I understood they are sold by several workshops in Chennai, this man here purchased it there.
      But sorry I have no contact data or address.
      If you take the highway along the coast from Chennai down to Puducherry you will see lot of these vehicles, they are very common there.

      @bangalorebobbel  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sry I have no actual data about these vehicles.
      In 2011, the price was around 50.000 Rupees for one of these which I filmed at the petrol bunk, as the owner told me. He got it from Chennai, he told. His vehicle runs with a Bajaj chetak engine, from my own experience with Bajaj Chetak I would say it could do around 20-25 km with one liter of 2stroke mix.
      I guess todays prices are higher, means that was 7 years back and meanwhile prices went up for everything ...

    No safety.. who ever is riding is in 100 % risk of life.!! It is illegal to make such vehicles. Will go to jail for it.!!

    • @bangalorebobbel
      @bangalorebobbel  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      oh yes it is surely dangerous, maybe even same dangerous as riding bicycle or motorcycle without helmet. Maybe not exactly same since the max speed of such vehicles is much below that one of motorcycles or bicycles racing downhill, but anyhow comparable, I guess ...
      I do not think that it is illegal to make such vehicles. Nobody can forbid to make it. Also students at engineering colleges build all kind of more or less strange vehicles as their projects, never heard of anybody being fined or so.
      What might not be officially allowed is using such vehicles on a public road. Without registration, insurance, emission test etc. it might not be legal to run such vehicles on public roads. But here in India such vehicles are very common in some regions, maybe there are local exceptions or special rules. Same as e.g. for motorised wheel chairs, maybe. Or for bicycles or so, since also bicycles don't have registration or insurance yet people use them on public grounds and cause often accidents (or are involved in accidents).
