I’ve been watching your videos for a long time. Just picked up my first 101 (a FT-101EE) last week. I love it. Just finished an alignment and it’s receiving great and putting out over 100 watts now. Thanks for taking the time to post these videos. It’s helped me a lot.
I have two FT101E's and a ZD. All were faulty in some way. I didn't have the heart to throw them away and although i'm no technician even I could see the very high quality build and components used. It's not stretching a point to say that they are things of beauty. I was waiting for someone on youtube to help me- and along came you Buddy. I have now repaired the 'ZD (faulty display) with your guidance and now feel confident to tackle the 'E's.I (1: "crispy critters" under the tube bases, 2: Low Rx sensitivity on all bands). No need to reply - just spend the time making these fabulous videos. Just wanted you to know that your expertise and video presentation are both priceless.
I have a set of 101s, the FR-101SD and the FL-101 Xmtr. They haven,t been used in a very long time and the chassis on one of them is definately "hot", if you know what I mean. When I get the money and the time I want to recap both of them and get them back in the shack. Out of all of the radios that I have had, the 101s are my favs. Your videos are legend. Thank you.
Subscribed! Looking forward to the series! I have a FT101E that I have been restoring and you are right, there are not a lot of repair videos on this great old radio.
Does t get much cheaper than that does it? I have finally had time to get this on the bench this afternoon. Installed all the missing parts and replaced one bad resister. Doing all this while shooting the video. The darn thing is receiving,,,,,
Hi buddy, you have my interest in the FT101 yaesu in a series package. I really feel these radio are very advanced when they came out. I have one FT101B and would very much like to learn how to improve sound value. With your help it will sound awesome. You fix radios and that has my attention. God bless you my friend thank you for sharing your ideas.
Dennis, I agree. Nothing else on the market could touch these rigs when they first came out. Lot of feature packed in this transceiver. I think the "B" was one of the most popular rigs ever built. Thanks for watching my friend.
Hi Buddy, I had an EE and handled thousands of messages through the Army Mars system. Also many phone patches. Never changed a tube or had to do any service. Those are great old radios. You sure are blessed with them. It would be great to see some videos on the 101. Sure, maybe do one on the receiver, then xmit, then maybe VFO, whatever you choose would be great. My opinion on video length is, a segment ends when you get tired or run out of parts. Too long, break it into many parts. Information from experienced technicians on vintage gear is priceless and hard to come by. 73
Hi Larry. I remember hearing the story's of these radios doing that. Handling lots of traffic. It really puts them to the test. I will break the videos up by section. Probably start with the heart of the rig. Power supply and rails. Thanks for watching.
Nice collection of FT-101's.I just purchases my 1st this past weekend for $125 with all of the crystals except the 160 meter.Have not pulled the filter board too see what filters are installed.Hoping the AM filter is there but not a big deal if not.I usually am NOT a fan of Yaesu but made an exception on the FT-101B(Early Version).
I tell you they are tough rigs and sound quite good. Not a bad price you gave either. Don't forget the problem caps down between the stages. you will like this rig. Please let us know how it goes.
While I've never owned an FT-101, I do think they're beautiful radios. I'd be very interested in seeing a series of videos showing the repair and restoration of the radio.
Just got an FT-101E on eBay that looks pretty rough but looks complete. Thinking full restoration is in store so I'll be glued to your wisdom sir! Thank you so much for sharing all your knowledge. Do you have any tips on deep cleaning? There's some surface rust on the internal sheet-metal as well as years of grime on the boards. I'd like to return it to as new as possible the right way. Ideas?
At some point I was going to do a few videos in this model. Looks like you beat me to it. Great radios built like Sherman tanks. A few suggestions. Many HAM's do their own alignments on these and I think the final unit kind of throws them for a loop. Might not not be a bad idea to do a video on aligning the final unit and also using original Japanese tubes and American made tubes in the final. Many people seem to forget to change the plate cap when substituting American tubes. Like I said if you need anything like covers and knobs let me know, I have spares. One thing I don't have is a spare AM filter, nice score on that alone. I need to get another one some day for one of mine that doesn't have it Mike.
Good point on the tube substitution. I have seen many hams change out the originals and say I had no problems. They don't get it. You must change out C125 when you switch from NEC and Toshiba to any other tube. Or be prepared to replace them again.Hmmm, you need stuff, I need stuff. I will send you an email tomorrow....
Buddy. Thanks a lot. I''m looking forward your serie about the Ft101. I love old transceivers and as owner of an not transmitting FT101EX hope to can repair mines. '73 Paul
I know this is an old post hopefully still monitored - have you seen/worked on a 101 where 20M is transmitting on 12Mhz? I tried two different crystals and both yield the same results
can you show us were the mixer unit is in a yaesu ft-101 early model and can you say what it dose and how its powerd up and what would make the mixer unit smoke up?
I have 2 FT-101's both pre B, one early and one just pre B. with noise blanker. Want to modify these to get rid of birdies using balanced mixers and dual gate fets in front end. Suggestions?
Hi and thanks for the videos! I just got a ft-101ee from the berryville hamfest. Im wiring a new cinch-jones and was wondering if i should run the green wire of the three wire ac plug to pin 7 / ground? thanks!

Hello, I am working on an Fl101 for a friend, and I'm suspect of the bias voltage regulator board. I have low U.C. current. All other voltages are present. Do you have any you would part with?

Hi Charles. I hope you find the series helpful. I have heard a lot of sad stories on the tube swap. As long as you can get 6JS6's I would not do it. This is however my personal opinion.

I admit I cringe a little when I hear the paint of a nice looking radio slide across the bench. Great video as usual though and much appreciated.
Yep, But it will be completely repainted. Was already scratched up pretty bad. Thanks
I have a FT-101 I'm working on...but it's a ZD.

Oh my. Very nice. Thanks for sharing that. They are out there and can be had for next to nothing.
Lucky bastard
It's not worth repairing these radios. They are not easy to use. And they are full of problems!
If you truly love radios, they are a joy to use and quite easy to repair and keep running. Just look at how many are still around and being used.
