Another way that would be good to limit speedsters is to show that speed and acceleration are 2 different things. Someone can have a maximum speed of 10 times the speed of sound, but it takes them 10 minutes of accelerating to get to that speed. That way, their perception only matches how fast they are already going. This would explain how a speedster could get hit by a normal person if the speedster can't accelerate to maximum speed instantly.

Or, you can limit the rules of time-travel. The book about Speedstress is going to have a speedster villain from future, the teenage heroine's son. At least Speedstress herself isn't going to learn to time-travel until later, but after she does, she wouldn't do that again because while speedsters could go back in time, they can't go forward in time, meaning doing that too much could have her age faster than she should. And she can't change the past, so if she's ever late, she's late. She can't go back to be on time.

Time travel rules for have been established by the chronokinetic character Clark Shadow who explains that time-travelers cannot change the past because they were already in the past. While Clark's time-manipulating powers mean he can jump back and forth between the past and future, that's not the case for speedsters who run faster than time to run in "negative time" to arrive earlier than they left, meaning it's one-way time-travel for them. Milo Velo is pissed off that he's trapped in the past with no way to go back to the future. So he does the same things history said about the speedster villain Negaspeed, because it turns out he was Negaspeed and could not do anything to change the past because it's one timeline.

to be fair, you do take off some consistency and/or logic to write a story.
but that's less about a character
and more about a story itself.
Like, especially when it comes to magical stuffs, very much specifically when it comes to magical stuffs
if you do not lay one ounce of rule to how the powers work
I can absolutely guarantee at least one viewer will think: but couldn't he just-
and then the thoughts run across the community
but then, if you take the most logical course of action to deal with a problem-
      then there's no story.
Take avatar the last airbender for example, the show is great
it's amazing, the story is fantastically well written
      and then you think
*couldn't Aang during the final fight just- quite literally create a void of no air (thus no oxygen) around Ozai when he was in his avatar state (where he was being ruthless kid craving for the death of the opponent instead of the pacifist monk he tends to be)*
creating a void isn't exactly hard I mean it's just push the air from a specific location, no more different than everything else done in the show
but right, while very easy solution, not really very appealing for a final fight of a series

"It's just a movie" is the most annoying answer I get when I try and discuss an inconsistency in writing. I mean, I don't get it, don't people understand what fictional storytelling is supposed to be on such a fundamental level?
Edit: Just to elaborate a bit further, to make myself clear; a fictional story needs some internal logic, in order for the audience to be immersed, because you need to be able to build suspense, relief and stuff like that. If the audience does not understand the rules of the world they can not build their expectations of what is expected to happen, what dangers lurk and so forth. On the other hand, if they not only not understand, but positively know that there is no self consistent internal logic, immersion is broken. They are suddenly not observing a story that lives on its own, but a storyteller trying to tell them a story they conceived.

I think YoYo Rodriguez was a great example of a speedster with limits from Agents of Shield. She can only use super speed in the time between her heartbeats, and once her heart beats again, she "snaps back" or retrogrades back to her starting point. The calmer she is ,the lower her heart rate, which gives her more time at superspeed, and the necessity of having to be flung back to her original spot creates some interesting and creative obstacles/advantages to how she uses her power in various situations.

He can practice it all he wants, but he can't predict what final obstacles will be in his way. Yes, he could have looked beforehand, and that could have been a primer, but he also waited for the exact moment that the teacher was going to sit down.
There's also the fact that he ran through an extensive amount of jungle later in the film. He had no way of practicing that particular course, and it was significantly more dangerous and random, and it would have required his perception to match his speed.

Most people with an average perception wouldn't be able to outrun several flying vehicles that wanted to hurt them, over unfamiliar and risky terrain in a scary situation, all the while making life-or-death snap decisions repeatedly over quick succession. It would be like being on a high way going 70 mph and being expected pass a math test where you can only see the questions as you're passing them, and with less than an second to answer them. Relativity is a bitch for speedsters - that's why they're so commonly portrayed as having a heightened perception in the first place. Otherwise, you just end up mowing through people like the speedster in the Boys did with that girl in the first episode.
Dash not only had to see where he was going, he had to understand what he was doing, while maintaining his own wellbeing and his footing, and making several snap decisions back to back to back where any mistake could be fatal - all while being scared and in a stressful situation where his family were likely in just as much danger - and he only survived, he handled the whole thing like a champ. @Someone_3lse วันที่ผ่านมา

      1. I rarely see speedsters that have unlimited agility. You don’t even need agility to dodge a bullet if you move at the speed of light
      2. Being a speedster requires leg strength. You wouldn’t be able to run if you had none.
      3. Could be interesting probably what you were going for with leg strength. Also this does get addressed in some speedsters. Barry consumes 10k calories daily (should probably consume more but at least it was addressed). It’s mentioned once early that Cisco made an energy bar with a ridiculous amount of calories in it.
4.Regeneration is not always a part of speedsters. It depends on what their abilities affect. In Barry’s case and most of the speedsters in DC it comes from the speed force which speeds up everything about them. This includes their metabolism and healing.
      5. This is just a DC speed force thing. Even with how fast Superman is he can’t time travel.
      6. Speedster would naturally have really good perception or they wouldn’t be able to move at such high speeds. They have to perceive things faster or they might just run into a wall. Perception doesn’t mean being able to see all around them at all times. It just means to being able to perceive what is in their line of sight. So sneaking up on a speedster is in theory possible. But they could also counteract this by constantly spinning around. But then if you don’t speed up their healing you can use dizziness as to why they can’t constantly do that
      7. Now that I’m writing this I realize endurance is pointless to talk about. We care more about stamina which once again I point to needing to consume a ton of calories.
      8. I like lack of focus idea. Except that it’s what they usually go to (or something similar). Flash loses fights because he forgets he can do something or he’s just being stupid.
      9. This goes back to perception. If you can move at the speed of light and due to that perceive things at the speed of light your reaction time is going to be insanely high.
I’d say 4, 5 and 8 are really easy to cut out. They don’t naturally come with speed.
3 and 7 can easily be addressed with by saying the speedster eats a ton of calories daily.
The real issue with speedsters is that get put up against people with abilities that have no way of actually defeating a speedster yet the speedster somehow loses a fight. Give us villains that are appropriate for fighting speedsters. Reverse flash and that guy with slow force abilities are examples of abilities that would be good ways to counters speedsters. I love snarts character but his abilities just are not a good match for Barry.

He's able to accelerate to the point he becomes invisible, but only does it in short bursts and in a straight line in order to avoid crashing into things (likely because he becomes blind while traveling so fast). He moves really fast, but for the most part just looks like someone moving really fast as upposed to super speed. And he loses his fight because he begins to accelerate into light speed just as a bunch of water dropplets start coming from the sky, essentially becoming bullets at that speed. About Dash and the Tack: Humans can do moves quicker than their perception under two circumstances. 1.) They reflexively react. 2.) They Pre-plan a sequence of movements. Number 2 can first be achieved by focused visualization followed by immediate implementation. Secondly, 2 can be accomplished by repetitive practice of a single skill. But these methods all have the drawback of being a single movement or a short, fluid order of movements. They can be done repeatedly, but each instance itself is short lived.
Ash could have pulled off the tack prank with both flavors of strategy 2. I’d guess it was the visualization flavor though, because he was probably trying to explore his limits.

The second explanation is exactly what a character in the anime World trigger does. The character in question was able to move super fast(not quite remember how much) so much so that her brain and reflexes wouldn't be able to keep up. So when the character attacks she does a pre planed set of motions. In a fight an opponent is able to figure it out and predicts her path to counter her. I think Dash's perception abilities work mainly because I think he has to lock in to use it but not necessarily use it everytime he runs. For instance when he's running on water, he realizes what's happening and laughs in normal time. But at the beginning of the movie, and in certain scenes, we see him maneuver in tight areas. He may not be Barry Allen fast perception, but he doesn't have to be. In the prank scene he's only moving 30ish feet at most at a couple hundred miles an hour at least. I think that warps the perception of him being Flash fast

Battery has to charge up her speed and can only go fast in bursts. Chuckles has super-speed movement and perception but can’t ever turn it off, meaning the world always appears to be moving incredibly slowly to him, so he went completely insane. Legend’s brain shuts down more the faster he goes; he could go the speed of light but he would be insensate.

My favorite take on speedsters is Flicker from The Fall of Doc Future. As soon as chapter 1, it's obvious that Flicker is so powerful that the idea of her being in any kind of danger, or any risk of losing, is ludicrous. Her limitations come from the fact that she basically destroys everything she interacts with if she's not careful. And if she goes too fast, she basically starts nuking everything around her, so she has to manage her speed depending on where she is.

I can suggest another way to write a speedster. Weight changing inversely with the speed of movement. The heavier the object, the more energy is needed to accelerate it. It would be logical if a speedster could reduce his mass to gain more speed. But the smaller its mass, the more difficult it is to influence the surrounding world. He could even accelerate to the speed of light, but in this state he is essentially a ghost who cannot even move a paper cup. In this way, the speedster can become untouchable for those around him, but those around him also become untouchable for him.

I feel like even with super perception this would solve the op issue. • @andeolevain

I like the idea. Someone like that wouldn't be able to run that fast, because running really fast recquires a crazy acceleration applied to your legs at every step. So they likely wouldn't really run faster than a regular human elite sprinter. After all, mental speed is already not the main limiting facter for a trained sprinter, except for 0.2 seconds on the starting line.
Still, super-speed perception alone would already be pretty OP. The closest I can think of are Spiderman and Jedis, but it's not fully explicit and consistent. That, and manga characters having a full existential crisis in-between two punches, but that's a different story.

An anime called World Trigger had a great use of super speed. The person using it had to effectively preprogram in their own movements. So the speed could only be used in short bursts, and if you anticipated how they were going to move, they couldn't react to change their pattern. It perfectly solves the issue that CW Flash and Red Rush had where people could react to where they were going to be, despite both of those characters ostensibly being able to react faster than anyone should be able to.
I'm also a fan of Super Speed needing to be something that is activated, as opposed to it just constantly being active. That way speedsters wouldn't be living in an agonizingly slow hell all of the time, as well as having it make sense for them to get surprised once in a while.

There is away to make speedsters less powerful without diminishing their awesomeness. Require limits to ramping the speed of their reaction time and perception. This allows them to be defeated by non speedsters, but if they can overcome the limitation, they can still pull off the same overpowered feats. This requires them to plan initial moves without the benefit of reactions and course corrections. This is especially true for heroes, since they cannot cause collateral damage or casualties.

  • @rovenroyce

If writers want to create untouchable speedsters like The Flash or Quicksilver, they also need to come up with clever ways to neutralize them that make sense. It’s not enough to have them lose through random plot armor or implausible scenarios. Think about strategies that counteract speed and reaction time like taking them out while they’re asleep, sneaking up from behind, blinding them, or using traps they can’t outrun. Even drugging them could work, though their superfast metabolisms might complicate that. The point is to challenge their godlike powers in ways that feel logical and satisfying, rather than breaking the rules of their powers.

Counter arguement to the thumbtack thing. Maybe Dash had found a moment when the class was empty to rehearse the move at slower speeds, and gradually work it up to super speed. He could get probably a hundred or so practice runs in 5-10 minutes at least, and by working your way up, you don't need to be able to percieve at that speed, you just need the perfect moment when there's nothing blocking your practiced route. That probably isn't the explanation in the Incredibles, but I've always wanted to see a speedster rehearse certain complex actions so that they can do them at speeds that they wouldn't be able to percieve normally. A great way for the writer to let them do something insane that doesn't break the character, or a great way for something to go wrong, since they're moving too fast to react and are relying on muscle memory.

As an ongoing writer of whom many characters are absurdly fast, the main two ways I present ''realistic'' (perhaps believable is a better term) scenarios through which a very fast character can still be threatened, are through two means:
    1. Restriction of their own power. I.E: Their power isn't always active, but more akin to force speed from Star Wars, something that has to be actively used. Think of it like the difference between a walk or light jog, or a full sprint. You're not usually going to do the latter, because you'll drain yourself rapidly. This applies foremost to my protagonist, who unlike some of his antagonists does tire out. He has a gas tank, a limited amount of energy to spend, and has to apply it intelligently. This prevents the question of ''Why doesn't he just use superspeed to do this or that''. There is a limit.
    2. Even playing fields. The characters traveling and fighting at insane speeds don't have peers besides others that also have access to similar speeds, and I make damn sure that disparity is never broken. It has a 100% consistency throughout the story. No ''speedster'' (they're not, they're just powerhouses in general who have superspeed) in my story is ever going to be threatened by anyone even close to a human level for instance. And this actually forces me to write more creatively, expand the arsenal of potential threats. It's part of why I like it.
And for a little bonus, none of my characters as I mentioned are actual speedsters. They're just incredibly powerful in general, more akin to Superman than The Flash. And the main reason why is durability. The idea of someone being absurdly fast but having basically no other powers never sat right with me, because going far past sound speed already means a human would splatter themselves. This means you'd have to invent some means through which that doesn't happen, and often times that isn't explained with speedsters, leading to insane moments of inconsistency like Fox's Quicksilver being able to run through water drops at mach 8,000, but hurting himself tripping into some grass and wood at barely surpassing human running speeds. That doesn't happen to my characters. Their speed might not be constant, but the rest of them is. A normal knife would just snap even if you'd try to push it into their eyeball while they're asleep, because how else could they survive a run at lightspeed with their eyes open, with ''soft'' particles entering it the whole time, particles that would have continental level catastrophic damage effects if they were to collide you with at lightspeed much less more?
Superspeed is an incredible ability, especially when you're at such speeds that it's comparable to meddling with time, but it *has* to be written well. 99% Of writers just don't seem to understand that superspeed isn't just an ability. It's essentially the affecting of a dimension. It's not just a buff to your overall ability. It changes the dynamics of a character and how they can move and fight. It unlocks a lot of new pathways by which a character can tackle a problem, but with those new pathways also comes the responsibility of either using them, or explaining to your audience how and why one of them or even all of them cannot be used.
Self imposed limitations are the key to good writing in my opinion.

Did you consider that a speedster needs a downward force keeping him on the ground?
The shove from your leg that pushes you forward ALSO pushes you UP, we're just too weak to notice that in Earth gravity.
This is why fast animals change their stride as they accelerate -- because the walking stride and the running stride work differently in terms of forces and angles.
But there is no stride that will keep a 200-pound man on the ground when his leg exerts a 10,000-pound force at a 45-degree angle.

A personal favorite speedster is from Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series. Steelpushers are able to store their speed in something called a metalmind, which has to be made out of steel. They can store an amount proportional to the amount of steel they have on their body, and they can only draw their speed out when it's still touching them. Steelpushers can only draw from their own metalminds. And the best part, when the steelpusher stores speed, they're that much slower. But you can also draw it out as fast as you want.
They do not have faster perception, and they do have to worry about friction, which is another thing that's not often addressed with speedsters..
So if you were a steelpusher and decided to be half speed for an hour, you can be double speed for an hour later. Or half an hour and quadruple speed. Or 15 minutes at 8x speed, and so on.

I think the best hard cap for a speedster is objects. At the speeds shown in most comic book speedsters even a piece of paper would tear you to shreads. Rain would be a hard counter. This would make their time perception valuable while also forcing them to navigate the world more carefully. Doesnt matter how fast you COULD run if the area is full of things you need to avoid. Running through a plume of dust would cause injury, running into someone would put you in the hospital.

Very true, later on I realized some speedsters wouldn't even touch one to give a punch, but the same way Flash and others would give punches at full speed which would absolutely oblitarate their arms if they didn't have steel bones. I like the show but it shows everything a speedster can do at one moment or other and then it completely forgets about it in a few episodes and comes back later

I think there's still more to study on specifically Flash's case. There's decades of buildup around him, and these suggestions basically require rolling back what his identity is. So much lore establishing he's supposed to be the fastest thing possible, some odd interaction with friction so that nothing goes wrong, and exploring his top speed as competing with the speed of light and often capable of time travel. With those constraints already in place, THEN try writing a good Flash. The problem is that just baseline he's overpowered yet supposed to be a day-to-day hero facing conflicts. Newer speedsters seem to be generally better written.

If you're looking for suggestions, try the TV adaptation of Preacher. There are several inconsistencies in power level. The first time we see Cassidy, he's able to pick up an entire cow, but regularly gets beat up or restrained by humans. Then the first time we see Jody, he picks up the rear end of a truck to drop it on a guy's head, but suffers the same kind of decay, being beat up by Jesse in a fist fight.

I once had a concept for a speedster, essentially his reaction time is reactive to two factors, his speed and the danger he is in. The faster he moves, the faster he can react to things up until it reaches a certain point where he sees things in slo mo. He can never really be caught off guard by a gun since his reaction speed increases when he is in danger. Of course then comes his speed, he can move faster than a human. But within his biological limits. If he attempts to move faster than his body can handle it. It will rip it apart or cause it to burn in certain areas due to friction. His limiting factor was his durability.

A speedster done right that never gets talked about is Yo Yo from Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Her power manifest in short bursts of speed, but only for the duration of one heartbeat and she must return to her original location before the heartbeat ends. that limitations caps her range and her ability to spam Speed to solve all problems. And it lead to her losing her arms later in the story. But once she used speed, she got to have all the Flash-like quicktime cinematic events but be less overpowered or problematic for the plot

  • @thesoniczone11
    @thesoniczone11 4 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

The real problem with speedsters is that it seems like a lot of people don't actually want the speedster to have super speed in the first place, but at the same time thinking super speed is the coolest power ever. Super Speed is SUPER SPEED. Being so fast that you can perceive time and move within attoseconds... is just what "super speed" inherently means. Speed is supposed to be cool and fun, so just let the speedster be cool and fun. Write the character to be FAST and commit to it. Give 'em stakes and obstacles that match up to that level of speed. Don't put a speed-focused character against a challenge that would be automatically overcome by that speed, unless him dominating it with his speed is the intention for "coolness".

There's a character in the my here academia spin-off, vigilantes, who is also a speedster. In the brief moment his powers are active he becomes untouchable. His weakness, though, is that he can't breathe when speeding, so his powers are limited by the build up of carbon in his lungs. We end up seeing an imposter arrive with a more advanced version of his power, stolen from the original hero, who is beaten by the original hero playing a recording so fast that only the imposter can here. Despite being stronger, the imposter is chased off because that brief distraction holds his attention long enough to reach the limit of his oxygen, and thus slow down. It was a fun read.

I'd write speedsters as if their powers where focused based. The more focused they are in getting from point A to point B, the faster they are and the slower they can perceive things.
    This does a few things:
    1. Makes them vulnerable to sneak attacks,
    2. Gives them time to have a normal perception of time when doing normal things. No more, "every hour feels like a decade" bullshit.
    3. At their most focused/fastest, they are also vulnerable to (hyperspeed) sneak attacks. As they would be hyper-focused on one thing and filtering everything else.
    4. Makes meditating a viable way to train their powers. Being poetic, "in order to move the fastest, you must learn to stay still."

Maybe bring that up in shows like the Flash where the priority is protecting the town or in the villains case targeting Barry.

I do have one small criticism on the path to get to a point I ultimately agrre with. The difference between Metro Man and The Flash is that CW Flash is focused on The Flash as a main character, while Megamind is focused on Megamind. Megwmind works because Metro Man's actions are a twist that the audience isn't clued in on. He is meant to be an unstoppable obstacle that removes himself from the story. If The Flash did something similar out of boredom, it might work for a bit, but it couldn't sustain a story.

Something to note is Metroman's "after effect" when he moves fast. He isn't just leaving a frame of him, he is leaving a color of the light. He is moving faster than the light spectrum.
That, or he just has a nice unique after effect.

A really good speedster to writing for me is in Kamen Rider Kabuto
Kamen Rider being basically the uncle of Power Ranger as a series as it been running since 1971
But back to main point what make speedster in Kabuto good in specific for me is the fact they need to touch an actual switch to activate their speed and there is a time limit to it so they cannot just be fast all the time, but when they are fast nothing can beat them beside other speedster
What more interesting though is their speed is from acceleration of their personal time rather than actual speed boost so them perceiving the world slowly make sense

He can only go 100km/h, has a hear limit on how many times he can go all out, can't turn sharp corners (espexially when he's carring something, and as far as we know doesn't have slowmotion perception.

  • @jordanbrass8708

You mentioned the anime characters briefly, but one that came to mind for me specifically was Shinra from Fire Force, he's fast because he shoots fire out of his feet and can propel himself, but in a few instances throughout the series he gets "Blessed" by an outside source and essentially gains high tier speedster powers for a short time, so he's only OP when the plot deems him so, but it's never something he can just do on his own

There's cool 'Speedsters' in the Mistborn series.
They are incredibly limited, but nonetheless very well written.
They need to 'Store speed' for hours and hours, which means that they need to spend a lot of days, weeks or even months where they just move really slow. The slower they move and the more time they do it, the more speed they accumulate. After that, they can release it in extremely big bursts to become almost invincible or slowly to cover large distances or to make it last in long fights. One of them even stopped an explosion once.
There's like a hundred extra completely layers to it, but my point is that if you want good speedsters Mistborn is the place to go.

I think a good way to counter speedsters is with traps or illusions. Something they can't grasp without guessing with a little of risk.
Another way I find funny is when a speedsters carry a villain, theoretically now the speedster is at normal speed relatively to the villain so they can fight fairer. Could be nice to see this in a very tanky unit that the speedster is having trouble to fight.

One that I remember is Sloth The Indolent from FMAB. Extremely fast and bulky, to the point that he creates a vacuum whenever he moves fast, but is way too fast from him to react or control his movements. An ironic play from him to be extremely fast when all he wants is to sleep (constantly complaining about it "Such a pain! Coming back is a pain... But then, fighting all out is the biggest pain of all"). In Christianity, sloth is a deadly sin that represents apathy and inactivity in the practice of virtue, so Sloth not even trying to control his monstrous speed, which he was made with, plays into the ironic theme of the anime.

The Gone series by Michael Grant has a speedster that is defeated by the dark. If she can't see where she's running, she will almost guaranteed trip on an obstacle and break her leg at super speed. She can also only perceive things "faster" if they are relative to her velocity. For example, she can see bullets going by, but only if she's already running at 300 mph. If you shot her from behind unprepared, she'd be as dead as the next person.

One such anime speedster is iida/Enginium from My Hero Academia. Anime in general tends to play fast and loose with movement speed roughly correlating to perception speed, but his speed abilities are specifically modeled after a combustion engine. He can power it up in different amounts, but it all takes stamina and his strongest exertions of it can overheat/blowout the engine.
