      Hey Daniel! It looks like we're finally starting to see that cool down we're all eagerly looking forward to. We wanted to get the beds planted out this weekend, but I think it's destined for next week. Need to get those veggies in before we start seeing sub 50 degree nights!

      @@EdgeofNowhereFarm we planted beets, tomatoes, peppers, kale and Swiss chard two weeks ago in our raised beds and also planted a Orange Jubilee Esperanza and three tangerine vines to beautify our property. More veggies going in this week and God willing our replacement apple tree (Anna) going in tomorrow.

    I know it's best to plant trees in the fall, but that's probably _far_ more true in the desert! If someone planted in spring, there's almost no way those little sprouts would survive the mid-summer sun without lots of time, effort and money.
    Good job, the place is looking great!

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      So true about fall planting. We prefer it over spring every time. The exception would be bare root trees which we have delivered in the middle of winter. Same thinking there though, they get time to establish before the heat sets in!

  • @gladimirsavinon104
    @gladimirsavinon104 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    If more individuals did this in the desert. They would reverse the effects of global warming.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hey Gladimir! We agree. Large cities like Phoenix do all they can to push water away from the landscape when we actually need to capture it and let it sink into the ground to encourage plant growth and cool the air. Too much concrete makes for a hot desert!

    Have you ever thought about taking some space on your farm and planting seedling trees (stone fruit/mulberry/maybe asian pear)? Would be cool to see if you could develop your own variety of something that does well in the desert heat. I had a mulberry pop up in my yard the other day so I decided to pot it up and see if it produces anything in a couple of years

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Great suggestion Joseph and we've kicked the idea around. The key for us here is getting irrigation to everything, so we would need to have a designated area to try them out. We do plan on at least 1 watering tank that would help with this, so maybe....

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Kenite, great question. We use the white Tree Trunk paint you can find in the nursery/garden section of Home Depot or Lowes. It's a 50/50 blend of latex paint and water, so you can make your own, but the premixed stuff is easy and pretty inexpensive.

    Hello!!! I live in Desert Hills Arizona and am planning on planting an orchard too. Our main concern right now is keeping the awful stink net weeds, that consume our property from fall through summer, from breaking ground. I have never used pesticides, even when I had a huge garden. I’m wondering if you have any thoughts or information about organic pre emergence, or how you two control your weeds. I’m so excited watching all your videos, and we are working on our design. Once we have more of a plan, we want make that call where we can get your input.

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey Suzanne! We almost bought property near your land back in 2012 before we found Wittmann. The surrounding area there is just beautiful! We don't use any treatments for weeds on the property. Instead we use wood chip mulch to keep weeds out of the planted areas. We then design around the areas where weeds will come up so we can reach them with a ride on mower or weed trimmer. Eventually we'll have animals grazing most of the open areas, so they will help us take care of a lot of those issues. I suppose one advantage to record heat this summer, we have no weeds growing on the property right now. Good luck with your orchard and send us pics when you get it in place!

    • @danielfisch655
      @danielfisch655 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      When we first bought our property in Paradise Valley six years ago we put down a few layers of cardboard down to stop weeds and put wood chips, horse manure, coffee grounds and compost on top, and thankfully we haven’t seen any weeds, and as everything breaks down we have beautiful top soil now.

      @@danielfisch655 Love that idea. We have a lot more space to cover, so it wouldn't hurt to do that here as well. Did you run irrigation to it, or hand water?

    Getting ready to plant 2 apple trees from Lowes, one Doesette and a Granny Smith. Our soil is the same in Tucson. Should I prep the soil first or plant them?

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hey Laura. No need to prep the soil in advance. The areas we were planting in today had never been touched prior to this. The only area that was trenched was the ground leading up to the emitter heads which are about 5 feet away from the planting holes. Be sure to mulch heavy after planting and get plenty of water on your newly planted trees. We also fertilize lightly with fish emulsion and B-1 to help drive quick root growth before winter sets in.

      Stark Brothers
      Raintree Nursery
      Grow Organic.com
      Willis Orchard
      The biggest challenge is they usually ship bare root trees which are ordered in the late fall and delivered in January-ish. Right now they may still have some potted trees, but the assortment is much smaller.

    What technique is the tree planting and watering system called and what's the purpose of it thanks 😊

    • @EdgeofNowhereFarm
      @EdgeofNowhereFarm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey there Ali. I'm not sure there is a name for this technique, but it's common to have trees planted with watering rings around them to hold irrigation water. The irrigation system is also very common as it's made out of PVC and ends with a 1/2 gallon/minute bubbler at the end of it to dispense water into the ring.
