Fun fact, moms don't know who their children are. It's so they take care of all children as if they were their own, which is why she was so shocked to learn Ray knew the song because she was also finding out who her kid was.

They left out a couple of details about Isabella, but I think they are very important. She truly loved those children, she did all in her power to give them a good life. She poured her heart and soul into this, so that those children would survive for as long as it's possible. Ironically this is exactly why her "product" was top quality. I understand why you wouldn't forgive her, but in a world she lives in you can't blame her for her choice. There are no right answers.
I got that feeling when I read in the manga her phrase: "I wish I could have loved you normally". She did the best as she could to survive and to provide the kids the best life she knew they could have, which for her was a 'naive life until 12 without ever knowing about demons, and dying fast'. Since for her it was impossible to escape, she thought that was the right answer.

Yeah. Somewhat like since you can't fight the system (as she tried to), you could instead make the most of it. So as bitter as it becomes, she gives the kids the best lives they could possibly live in a world ruled by literal man-eating monsters. But seeing the kids actually escaping, she finally felt hope that the system isn't as impenetrable as she thought it was. I mean, can you blame her for feeling insignificant? These huge and intelligent beasts eat humans for sustenance. I honestly could not say that I can continue fighting that kind of system for long.
I think Isabella taking her hair down was to show that she stopped fighting. Everything she did all these years was to survive the longest but after such a fiasco of letting so many of the most valuable children escape, there was no way she could fix that mess and save herself. So she admitted her defeat and wished the kids good luck.
Isabella loved her kids, she made sure all of them had the best time of their lives, she even made sure a lot of them were smart af so they'll live longer. And the part where she removed the ropes so the demons cant track the kids..

A big thing about the systhem that I think you forgot or overlooked in the end discussion, is the chip Krone told the kids about. If you become mom, you get chipped in a way that binds you to the farmgrounds. Yes, you could rebel, but if you do that, you could get killed super easily, and don‘t even think about stepping out of the farms. Mom was very similar to emma, really, and saw herself a lot in her, which is why she offered to recommend her for the mom position. She herself tried escaping as a kid, but got discouraged by the sight of the cliff, never even thinking about something as clever as the hanger ropeway. So she thought this system was impossible to escape and, since she wanted to live, did her best to become a mother, the only way to survive. The manga makes it pretty clear she truly loved these children and did the best to give them a happy life in blissful ignorance until their inevitable death. She acts rationally with the knowledge she had. In the end, when she saw that survival actually was possible, she gave up. It‘s not like she could have went after the kids because of the chip anyways. Accepting her own death, she does the last thing she can to help the children, hiding the ropes so that their escape path won‘t be discovered as long as possible. In the end, I like isabella, but I also do get why she can be hated.
Absolutely this, thanks for summarizing it so well. Anthony's hate for her is... well, not unjustified, but rather closed-minded on Isabella's character and thought process as a Mother. She's been portrayed as a villain in the story so far, but from her backstory, she's just as much a victim of the true villain of the story: the system and the cruel world these characters live in. Humans, no matter how evil or selfish they may seem, are often never purely black and white. Even someone like Isabella has real, logical reasons that drive them to do what they do.
Don is the most underrated kid imo. He's big, like too big for his age. His strength allowed him to knock that door down earlier in the season and his strong arm also aloud him to through the lasso further. As well they said only the first kid had to make it because it was Don, who was the biggest and therefore heaviest, if the rope holds Don it will hold any of the other kids but if not he'd be the first and only causality.
I think he has a fan in Gilda (She's often admiring or helping him and they hang together alot) and I'm kind of hoping they get together. Anyway, they are both often thought of as background characters because we don't usually get their POV and they don't do much of the planning, but its obvious how helpful and great friends they really are when you add up everything they do at the end of the anime or manga.
Isabella never really believed that the children would escape. She tried by herself and failed. All she can do was to make sure the children live long and happy before they were harvested. Hoping perhaps some would be spared because they are exceptional. It was love that she showed the children despite surrendering to the reality that the children would suffer a grim fate. Dammit. Hearing Isabella's Lullaby made me tear up again.
It's really simple when you realize that almost everything Isabella did , she did with the idea that escape for the children was impossible. But then ...why try to stop them? For two simple reasons: 1. Both for their own good (maximum life) and to 'protect the merchandise' and 2 . To protect herself. It wouldn't really matter if they escaped in the sense that if something happened to them such that they could not be eaten, she'd be in trouble and might lose her life. She had to be able to show she was doing her job, basically. Once she sees escape is possible, she is happy. She takes the sheets to help them escape (buying them lots of time as the Demons assume they are still on the grounds somewhere) and acts like the mother she wanted to be on what she is convinced is the last night of her life. Of course the manga makes it more explicit: when they are dumb enough to offer her the 'grandma' position, she doesn't want it because she wants to die in order to escape the horrible system, and all her guilt. But when she thinks on the children coming back to rescue their siblings she vows to become Grandma so she can help them when they do.
Such a shame they ignored the manga for season 2. A lot of people had complains about the manga after a while, but that had more to do about the pacing which could have been fixed in an adaptions.

While all our favorite characters (and lots of new ones) get important things to do they sometimes do disappear for 5, ten or even around 20 chapters at a time. The other big complaint is Emma's monologues, which I agree with. Lots of them are much the same as the others, going all the way back to the original story. And arguably, Ratri deserved a worse death. I can't think of a more contrived situation than the way he went, esp given he was surrounded on all sides by children and Sisters with guns. There's no way he escapes that. And he's the ONE person that Emma's reaction doesn't strike me as either 'in character' or even realistic. He was actually the children's biggest enemy (and hence, enemy of her Family) after all. Still compared to the second season anime the manga is a masterpiece. I will add that the sentimental part of me is glad Isabella's fate was happier in the anime but it's hard to care when they had to leave so much out anyway.
@@remo27 I think the missing year where they search for the seven walls should have been an arc and it would have help to show the demon's civilization. While I always understood Emma's stance on the demons, the manga didn't do a good job of showing the demon's as just people for the reader to fully believe it. Another thing I would have liked to see was a small mini arc showing Norman's side of things like how he escaped and made his community, it could have been a small 3 to 5 chapter flashback we got when he was reunited with Emma and Ray, this is something more a long the lines of what I would have want to see rather then something needed. If I'm honest, I never liked the Norman return, he came back too "powerful" and full of himself and after such a big deal the demons made about the important ceremonial that Norman, Emma and Ray were suppose to be, it made no sense that he would be spare.
I know you guys have already seen season 2, but yeah, this anime would've been a better story if it just stopped here. The manga is supposedly great, and they chopped out a ton of stuff from the original storyline in season 2. Oh well. Season 1 should be remembered as one of THE great thriller anime.
Indeed. The started off season 2 following the manga till the bunker, then just.. hanged everything for the worse after that. They didnt just cut out some stuff. They cut EVERYTHING after they arrived at the bunker and made up their own stupid rushed story. The Norman thing in season 2 was soooo bad. Ruined it.
For me, it’s not that they just chopped out the best parts of the content but change the story significantly. Even if they had just ended the story in season 2 it would have been fine but in the last 10 mins they have a quick montage of everything they left out of the manga which is just confusing to anyone that didn’t read the manga
The manga isnt great. A lot of people are disappointed because the manga went from great to absolute trash/garbage that needs to be burned. Now the anime, the author attempted to fix the story(which is why it looks all messed up) because he changed the story for the anime and in result…made it even worse than the manga. Literally in trying to fix the story through the anime, it became even worse complete garbage.
This is why Isabella is there with amazing antagonist. You learn to hate and fear them, because you don't know their motives. And then, when you think about it, you realize they are humans too, living creatures with past and traumas. Especially with Isabella, who is a reflect of Emma. For me, the big difference between them was that Isabella lost her precious friend before discovering the truth. She might have nothing to protect or fight for after that. And that rise interesting questions : would you rather live in a flawed system, try to slowly change it from the inside, with sacrifices on the way for a better futur, or would you jump into open fights, with the risk of losing everything you fight for ? Heroes are often the ones who die the sooner, because they refuse to accept life for what it is. A cruel world, when your dreams doesn't have to be fulfilled. You may lose, and you may regret it. It takes a lot to fight for people you don't know, who might not want your help or give you their thanks afterward. Especially if you're using the same bad stuff as the ennemy, but labelled as "the good side".
honestly i definitely did feel for isabella at the end. being a mom was the lesser of two evils and i feel like she did love them. also the back story did make me cry 😭
Krone basically said once they learnt the truth they give up all hope. They accept the system and the best they can do is try to give the kids the best life possible. That's the burden they pay for their survival
Fun Fact: The numbers on every episode titles are actually dates. For example, the 11th episode was 140146 which means 14th of January 2046 the day before Ray's birthday and in 12th episode when they escaped it was Ray's birthday 150146 or 15th of January 2046
Sorry bro. But Isabella is one of the best characters, she is a victim of that cruel world, Emma could be if she had given up too, but she had friends. Isabella was alone until the end. She deserves more, she deserved to be happy with Leslie.
I think there’s some misunderstanding around Isabella’s character. She lives in a world where humans are essentially cattle. These children will get fed to these demons regardless and she also knows that in the outside world they have no protection against the demons. So she made a decision that if children would be killed no matter what than she would be the one to raise them so that they lived a happy and loving life for the little time that they had. Honestly it was either this or die when she was 12. Also let’s not forget she tried to escape when she was younger but she wasn’t able to. Sure, feeding children to the demons is despicable but it was gonna happen anyways and to her it’s better they know a life of love rather than abuse they may experience on other “farms”.
Isabella cared for each one of those kids, she never wanted them to die. She made sure to give them the best lives before eventually having to lead them to their death, that’s why she sung that lullaby while delivering Conny, it stopped her from crying. But if she didn’t do it she would’ve been killed and the kids would have a less affectionate mother, she didn’t want that. Hence why she didn’t try to stop Emma, and that’s also why she took down the ropes, so the demons couldn’t follow.
I was just like y'all, saying I have no sympathy for Isabella, but her backstory. 😭 1. Imaging seeing that cliff for the first time. Remember, the protocol is that once a kid knows the truth they are immediately shipped out. Her 'Mama' knew that she knew. As it is now, Isabella's children are the exception. Isabella was going. 2. She was going in alone. Her friend is dead. She didn't have much time. Her has no plan and no hope. Sidenote, I also think this is one of the reasons Norman choose to return to the farm after seeing it. Remember that visceral reaction we all had. Imagine finally reaching the top of the wall and seeing that cliff. That would break any person, especially a kid. Norman was at least able to return and pass the information along for others. For Emma, Ray, and the other kids, it was just another obstacle to overcome. For Isabella? It was literally the end of the road. 3. Her choice. Just imagine her I'm that situation. She's facing 'Grandma' on one side and a demon on the other. In that moment, she had to choose between life and death. And she chose to live. Maybe she went in thinking that she would never become a Mama the same way Emma did. But that Bravado didn't hold up when actually in the face of a demon. And the damning part of the whole situation? I can't completely condemn her. Her friend was dead. There was literally nothing she could do for her other siblings. And she didn't want to die. We saw how Ray reacted on his shipment day, but not Emma. If she was faced with a demon, with her friends dead and no hope for the others, would she just die or chose to live for her friends and carry their memory. I like to think I'm an averagely good person, but I can't say I wouldn't consider the options. Like Ray, I would focus on the people who matter the most to me. Up until episode 11, I just considered all other kids a burden. And for Isabella? All I can say for the possible choice I would make is that I wouldn't want to die like that. And that's why I can't say I don't sympathize with her.
Oh and btw, when the mothers give birth their kids are immediately taken away. Isabella never knew that Ray was her child, but Ray doesn’t have the infantile amnesia so he remembers being in the womb and seeing Isabella after he was birthed.
I 100% like mom I understand everythin she did she didn’t do it out of evil or hate she did it 2 survive n 2 give these kids the best life they cld possibly have while bein there. She decided and knew “this is how the world is nothin I can do rn” n so she with wut she had she made it as good as she cld for those kids she loved those kids 2 death dats fo sho

Now imagine having to wait until season 2 came out to find out what happens next. Second season was different from the manga and cuts out some of the darkest stuff but still answers all the questions about the world.
I hope if you rewatch the show you do it on japanese dub. In the manga isabella didnt catch on them. When she arrive they're long gone. 😋 She also cared and love every children but there's nothing she cant do since she's smart but wasn't able to escape but her children are not alone this time and she's proud of them to be able to escape. Cant believe anthony still hate Isabella 😂😂😂
If you guys haven’t I SERIOUSLY suggest y’all read the manga for this show. The second season cut out a lot AND I MEAN A LOT. An entire arc and THEN some. Isabella (Mom) also gets a much more full redemption
Phil the M.V.P.! Anyway, there are a couple of special manga chapters that you should read. They went deeper into Crona and Isabella's backstory. (They might have even hinted as to who's Emma's mom... might).
I think Isabella raised all her kids well, to be the best quality, to be the smartest, so that they can be smart enough to find out the truth of this world and know how to survive this terrible world they live in once they escaped.
I understand Isabella. Yes, what she's done is terrible but what else could she have done though? What would I have done in that situation? She's not the real villain here, the Demons are. Isabella is just another one of their victims which is so much cruel since they're making humans breed humans for them.
I dont know why they didn't follow manga really it also affects the manga creator really great content in manga but s2 is a no for me personally seeing s1 and the manga events

She loved the kids but she still lead them to their deaths ,you can have sympathy for her but that doesn't excuse what she had done.
The disappointing thing is season 2 is entirely disappointing, and the way they adopt the original material is done really poorly. They miss out entire arcs and as a whole change the ending thoroughly. It's kind-of a shame but you'd expect that season 2 would need a lot of budget/given another more season afterwards.
I feel sympathy for Isabella because she doesn’t want to do this but is also a very intelligent and logic based therefore what is best for her is to live and to live she just needs to sacrifice some random kids. Im sorry to say this but id do the same cause I also have that kind of mentality so if I was in that situation id definitely do the same, unless I met my own child. Isabela wasn't really a villain, she was the result of this crazy world they lived in, and in her mind it was inevitable that these children would die, so she always wanted them to have a great life, no matter how long it lasted. In her disturbed way, she loved them...
isabella could not escape the fate, and became hopeless. If she could think of a way to run away with the kids, she would have. So after years and years of hopelessness she made it her mission, that if she cannot save the children, she can at least make them feel the love of a mother and a happy childhood, for as long as she can. Yes she was twisted, and her love may seem very psychotic. But she did love all of them, and she did cared for them not just because they needed to be raised right, but also because she wanted to give them the life the deserve as long as she can help it. Once the higher ups would demand a kid, she could not refuse. Because if she did not perform well, she would be replaced by a possibly worse mother, and then who knows what hell the children would have to go through. So she obediently did what was asked, and looked over all of them like her own children. She even cherished all the objects close to her kids. I can understand that not everyone will sympathise with her and I wont even claim that what she did was right, but if u look deep down, she wasn't exactly the bad woman. She was a woman who was given no option, knew she had to lose her child and committed herself to a mission that justified her living.

@@remo27 I think the missing year where they search for the seven walls should have been an arc and it would have help to show the demon's civilization. While I always understood Emma's stance on the demons, the manga didn't do a good job of showing the demon's as just people for the reader to fully believe it. Another thing I would have liked to see was a small mini arc showing Norman's side of things like how he escaped and made his community, it could have been a small 3 to 5 chapter flashback we got when he was reunited with Emma and Ray, this is something more a long the lines of what I would have want to see rather then something needed. If I'm honest, I never liked the Norman return, he came back too "powerful" and full of himself and after such a big deal the demons made about the important ceremonial that Norman, Emma and Ray were suppose to be, it made no sense that he would be spare.

I know you guys have already seen season 2, but yeah, this anime would've been a better story if it just stopped here. The manga is supposedly great, and they chopped out a ton of stuff from the original storyline in season 2. Oh well. Season 1 should be remembered as one of THE great thriller anime.
Indeed. The started off season 2 following the manga till the bunker, then just.. hanged everything for the worse after that. They didnt just cut out some stuff. They cut EVERYTHING after they arrived at the bunker and made up their own stupid rushed story. The Norman thing in season 2 was soooo bad. Ruined it.

For me, it’s not that they just chopped out the best parts of the content but change the story significantly. Even if they had just ended the story in season 2 it would have been fine but in the last 10 mins they have a quick montage of everything they left out of the manga which is just confusing to anyone that didn’t read the manga
The manga isnt great. A lot of people are disappointed because the manga went from great to absolute trash/garbage that needs to be burned.
Now the anime, the author attempted to fix the story(which is why it looks all messed up) because he changed the story for the anime and in result…made it even worse than the manga. Literally in trying to fix the story through the anime, it became even worse complete garbage.
Isabella's past was the most tragic of all. I think she deserves the most sympathy in the whole show.

This is why Isabella is there with amazing antagonist. You learn to hate and fear them, because you don't know their motives. And then, when you think about it, you realize they are humans too, living creatures with past and traumas. Especially with Isabella, who is a reflect of Emma. For me, the big difference between them was that Isabella lost her precious friend before discovering the truth. She might have nothing to protect or fight for after that. And that rise interesting questions : would you rather live in a flawed system, try to slowly change it from the inside, with sacrifices on the way for a better futur, or would you jump into open fights, with the risk of losing everything you fight for ? Heroes are often the ones who die the sooner, because they refuse to accept life for what it is. A cruel world, when your dreams doesn't have to be fulfilled. You may lose, and you may regret it. It takes a lot to fight for people you don't know, who might not want your help or give you their thanks afterward. Especially if you're using the same bad stuff as the ennemy, but labelled as "the good side".

Isabella's characterization was what ultimately cemented season 1 of Neverland as absolutely amazing for me.

I think there’s some misunderstanding around Isabella’s character. She lives in a world where humans are essentially cattle. These children will get fed to these demons regardless and she also knows that in the outside world they have no protection against the demons. So she made a decision that if children would be killed no matter what than she would be the one to raise them so that they lived a happy and loving life for the little time that they had. Honestly it was either this or die when she was 12. Also let’s not forget she tried to escape when she was younger but she wasn’t able to. Sure, feeding children to the demons is despicable but it was gonna happen anyways and to her it’s better they know a life of love rather than abuse they may experience on other “farms”.

Isabella cared for each one of those kids, she never wanted them to die. She made sure to give them the best lives before eventually having to lead them to their death, that’s why she sung that lullaby while delivering Conny, it stopped her from crying. But if she didn’t do it she would’ve been killed and the kids would have a less affectionate mother, she didn’t want that. Hence why she didn’t try to stop Emma, and that’s also why she took down the ropes, so the demons couldn’t follow.
I was just like y'all, saying I have no sympathy for Isabella, but her backstory. 😭
1. Imaging seeing that cliff for the first time. Remember, the protocol is that once a kid knows the truth they are immediately shipped out. Her 'Mama' knew that she knew. As it is now, Isabella's children are the exception. Isabella was going.
2. She was going in alone. Her friend is dead. She didn't have much time. Her has no plan and no hope. Sidenote, I also think this is one of the reasons Norman choose to return to the farm after seeing it. Remember that visceral reaction we all had. Imagine finally reaching the top of the wall and seeing that cliff. That would break any person, especially a kid. Norman was at least able to return and pass the information along for others. For Emma, Ray, and the other kids, it was just another obstacle to overcome. For Isabella? It was literally the end of the road.
3. Her choice. Just imagine her I'm that situation. She's facing 'Grandma' on one side and a demon on the other. In that moment, she had to choose between life and death. And she chose to live. Maybe she went in thinking that she would never become a Mama the same way Emma did. But that Bravado didn't hold up when actually in the face of a demon.
And the damning part of the whole situation? I can't completely condemn her. Her friend was dead. There was literally nothing she could do for her other siblings. And she didn't want to die. We saw how Ray reacted on his shipment day, but not Emma. If she was faced with a demon, with her friends dead and no hope for the others, would she just die or chose to live for her friends and carry their memory.
I like to think I'm an averagely good person, but I can't say I wouldn't consider the options. Like Ray, I would focus on the people who matter the most to me. Up until episode 11, I just considered all other kids a burden. And for Isabella? All I can say for the possible choice I would make is that I wouldn't want to die like that. And that's why I can't say I don't sympathize with her.
Oh and btw, when the mothers give birth their kids are immediately taken away. Isabella never knew that Ray was her child, but Ray doesn’t have the infantile amnesia so he remembers being in the womb and seeing Isabella after he was birthed.
I 100% like mom I understand everythin she did she didn’t do it out of evil or hate she did it 2 survive n 2 give these kids the best life they cld possibly have while bein there. She decided and knew “this is how the world is nothin I can do rn” n so she with wut she had she made it as good as she cld for those kids she loved those kids 2 death dats fo sho

In the manga isabella didnt catch on them. When she arrive they're long gone. 😋 She also cared and love every children but there's nothing she cant do since she's smart but wasn't able to escape but her children are not alone this time and she's proud of them to be able to escape.

I think Isabella raised all her kids well, to be the best quality, to be the smartest, so that they can be smart enough to find out the truth of this world and know how to survive this terrible world they live in once they escaped.
I understand Isabella. Yes, what she's done is terrible but what else could she have done though? What would I have done in that situation? She's not the real villain here, the Demons are. Isabella is just another one of their victims which is so much cruel since they're making humans breed humans for them.

She loved the kids but she still lead them to their deaths ,you can have sympathy for her but that doesn't excuse what she had done.

The disappointing thing is season 2 is entirely disappointing, and the way they adopt the original material is done really poorly. They miss out entire arcs and as a whole change the ending thoroughly. It's kind-of a shame but you'd expect that season 2 would need a lot of budget/given another more season afterwards.
I feel sympathy for Isabella because she doesn’t want to do this but is also a very intelligent and logic based therefore what is best for her is to live and to live she just needs to sacrifice some random kids. Im sorry to say this but id do the same cause I also have that kind of mentality so if I was in that situation id definitely do the same, unless I met my own child. If i met my own child then id try to escape with them
Isabela wasn't really a villain, she was the result of this crazy world they lived in, and in her mind it was inevitable that these children would die, so she always wanted them to have a great life, no matter how long it lasted. In her disturbed way, she loved them...
isabella could not escape the fate, and became hopeless. If she could think of a way to run away with the kids, she would have. So after years and years of hopelessness she made it her mission, that if she cannot save the children, she can at least make them feel the love of a mother and a happy childhood, for as long as she can. Yes she was twisted, and her love may seem very psychotic. But she did love all of them, and she did cared for them not just because they needed to be raised right, but also because she wanted to give them the life the deserve as long as she can help it. Once the higher ups would demand a kid, she could not refuse. Because if she did not perform well, she would be replaced by a possibly worse mother, and then who knows what hell the children would have to go through. So she obediently did what was asked, and looked over all of them like her own children. She even cherished all the objects close to her kids.
I can understand that not everyone will sympathise with her and I wont even claim that what she did was right, but if u look deep down, she wasn't exactly the bad woman. She was a woman who was given no option, knew she had to lose her child and committed herself to a mission that justified her living.
