The French Foreign legion enjoys a formidable reputation on the battlefields, cultivating an image of honour and glory. However, for many surviving veterans, there's no happy ending on retirement. Haunted by past battles, they fall prey to violence, alcoholism and depression. Their only consolation is the Legion's vow to look after its own. Gilbert Hensinger runs the official retirement home for legionnaires: "My role is to help the bums become lords again," he explains. At his castle in Provence, veterans make wine, earning their keep with dignity. "The legion never abandons its own - whether in combat or ordinary life - that is our motto."

The United States military could take a lesson from this. A lot of men after multiple combat tours are pretty screwed up after they get out. Much respect to the Legion for taking care of their own.
Makes me feel ashamed at the almost pitiful way our ex servicemen and women are treated here, take a look across the channel and take notes on how it SHOULD be done. France taking better care of foreign nationals willing to fight for her than Britain does for her OWN sons and daughters. Well done France, honouring the bravery of those who were willing to die for you.

Well done with this short documentary. When you join the Legion, during the process you are put on a bus with fellow candidates and taken to Puyloubier (where this is filmed) and spend the day working with the Anciens (veterans). It is explained to you that if you serve your contract honorably, you will always have a home, food, work and a bed here the day you need it. I'm 55 now and life is good, but I always know that if things go wrong, I have a special place to go. How many other institutions can say or offer the same? LPN

The Legion doesn't just allow anyone to join it, depending on your criminal past and what you done you may not be allowed to enter it, it is not like in the past you could get in no matter what you did.
