    This is explained alot better than in most other beginner videos. You explain how to get the board on edge perfectly. Many videos say "use your shoulder" to initiate the turn which is bad, because later you want a complete seperation of upper and lower body. Turning with the "levers" (lower body) is an awesome explenation

    Great videos Malcolm, I’ve been snowboarding for over 20 years now myself but I’m not an instructor and I can’t explain properly how I do what I’m doing. I have just bought my 11 year old son his first board and teaching the very basics is easy enough but this lever analogy for torsional twist is genius Malcolm. I didn’t really know that that’s what I do when I turn! But now I can explain this better to my son. I’ve been watching a few more of your videos now and you explain everything clearly and well. Great job, and thanks.

    Hi Malcolm! I'm a beginning snowboarder and I've taken some lessons and watched lots of TH-cam beginner snowboard videos. This is easily one of the most helpful. I've not seen turns explained like this before. I gave this a try today and the responsiveness from the board almost startled me the first time I tried it. Everyone says "get on your toes" or "get on your heels" and that *sorta* works but the technique in this video works on a whole higher level. I felt much more in control today after working the board this way. Thanks from a grateful newbie.

    Malcolm. Wow. I tried this today and it really brought my turning up so much! I come from a surf, skate and water ski background. I've been doing those since I was 8 years old and was even competing on an amateur level in skateboarding and water skiing. I surfed triple overhead waves when I lived in southern California. I moved to Switzerland and started snowboarding late last year. When I got off piste at the end of the season, the whole thing opened up. I was surfing again. But I didn't know how to work with the bindings. They seemed to prevent me from letting my feet guide the board. I've been listening to other TH-camrs and nothing has helped more than this video right here. We got some fresh snow and the slope closest to home was closed, so I hiked up and tried this. Wow. I am suddenly on the next level. Thank you Thank you Thank you.

    The lever analogy and using your knees and hips to control your movement is really working in my brain. I’ve watched a lot of other videos and they usually say to just point while leaning in that direction, and then using the shoulders to turn but like you said it’s a delayed movement compared to using the hips + knees first

      @veronical8103 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Malcolm Moore Yes, I have heard of the “gas pedal” or “foot pedaling”, but those analogies have never worked well for me. When you demonstrate your lever technique, I can see clearly that your knees are bent and that you use both your knees and hips, which are bigger body parts to manipulate with. Torsional twist is hard, if not impossible, to see for the students, so it’s brilliant that you can signal with your hands using the lever analogy which foot you are using to twist and untwist the board. This analogy just clicked! 🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻😄😄😄

      @malcolmmoore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@veronical8103 glad to help! I prefer not to call it foot pedaling, or gas pedal, because implies you actually slam your feet down, but it is much more effective when using your knees! Tortional twist doesn't quite have the same ring to it though!

    Hey Malcolm, your videos have helped me so much. It's event gotten me and my wife through CASI level 1 with no other instruction! The techniques in this particular video though has always been a bit challenging for me to pick up. I recently came to the realization that it was because my hips weren't following my knees. I think it would help riders like me for you to mention keeping the hips synced up with the knees and getting weight shifted over the board.
    Love the videos man, I look forward to new ones every winter.

When I first learned to snowboard, I saw so many videos teaching you to use your arms to turn. Now I'm gonna use your lever analogy to teach my friends, so that they don't have to navigate their boards by pointing fingers, which looks quite silly😂😂😂

    Can you make a video that focuses on tight, short turns? It feels like most videos on YT focus on wide turns which are great for when the slopes are empty but most of the time, they arent. Short turns with a focus on speed control would be a great video, thanks for the content man

    • @malcolmmoore
      @malcolmmoore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Sure thing, I will try and do that over the next couple of weeks. The movement in this video of using your feet and knees independently is essential for short turns. The second key ingredient is getting an early edge change before the fall line, so that you are achieving grip early in the turn, and not just skidding it around.

    • @Yawnz2
      @Yawnz2 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@malcolmmoore Thanks, just finished watching another of your videos and I cant wait to put it into practice! Skidding around feels so easy that iv fallen into the habit instead of properly using my edges.

      @@Yawnz2 skidding can work on the piste, but it definitely doesn't work when it comes to riding off piste, whether that be perfect powder or just some chopped up terrain. Even in the slush skidding will be tiresome on your legs, so its good to try and get riding well on the piste, then taking your riding all over the mountain will become alot easier!

    my first time snowboarding was surprisingly easy. not because I'm some prodigy or beginners luck, but because of the physics shown in this video^ and all my years beforehand riding a Ripstik.
    that was about 10 years ago and i've since used Ripstiks to teach my friends the basics at home so we can make the most of our time ($$) on the mountain. Being based in Florida (contrary to popular belief, it doesn't snow here), caster boards and practicing torsional twist are probably the best tools to build a foundation for snowboarding on the cheap.

    Awesome video, I had been feeling pretty comfortable making S turns where I'd patiently wait till my board was pointing downhill to switch to the new edge. Essentially the board was riding me, instead of the other way around. Went down a black diamond yesterday for the first time, and that method didn't work. I need to do a better job of controlling the board onto the new edge immediately. Can't wait to try this on the hill next time! Thanks for the tutorial!
