I was having problems finding spotlight search also and was trying to get it by pulling down from the TOP center of the iPad, instead of the middle. After googling it, I figured out what I was doing wrong. Once I pulled down from the middle of the iPad, the search box came right up. Thanks for the helpful tips!
For some reason your voice on this is going as fast as the cars on the Indianapolis Speedway on race day! How do I sow it down so I can hear what you have to say?
You are wonderful … I watch you for the first time you are patient ,I understand you soooo well I’m 82 years and I love the tips … I will use them for sure .God bless … 👍👍👏👏😘
Same here. I’m 57 and had an iPad for years. Think from the first ones but, I had absolutely no idea about these brilliant shortcuts. Thank you so much for your videos. Everyday is a new learning curve with this iPad.
Like another person commented, these tips are especially helpful for us older people. I just turned 70. I remember when computers first started in. My first course was actually wiring the computer and using punchcards. When I went back to graduate school, I was the only chem graduate student with computer and I put it in my lap and my research advisor Was really interested in a program I had written to streamline calculations we did. Up until the early 90s I was the only teacher in several schools to have my own computer. Nobody knew anything about but me Now? I’m behind the times. My daughter works in Apple. She gets frustrated. Trying to teach me stuff tells me just to go read about it or something. So I really appreciate these tips.
My grandson showed me how to use the little magnifying glass….. I use it all the time now. It saves you having to come out of what you are looking at …..I can’t look for knitting patterns and Agatha Christie books at the drop of a hat. Easy Peasy. This is definitely a good wee ‘tips and tricks’ video. Thanks.
Love all the tips I didn't realize it was called Spotlight and didn't know all the other ways to use it, thank you for saying it's basically a browser I thought it was only for stuff ON my iPad!!For the screenshot, I do not need my Apple Pencil, I just pull up from the bottom left with my finger...
I’m 80 years old and just found out how to get my big keyboard back I don’t know what I did to shrink it but I couldn’t figure out how to un shrink it and that was just one thing I learned I’m going to listen to it much more thank you so much❤
My grandson shrunk my keyboard and now i know how to get it back!!! Also the number above the letter thing is great ! I saw my granddaughter do that and didn’t know what she did.
1st time with you. Love your tips. Learned a few things and they work on the old 6th generation iPad. Love the drag down and get the number from a letter at 75, I’ll be on it even more learning. Thanks. Subbed and icon to get all. Thanks..
there is also a 4 finger swipe right or left to change to the previous app its handy if an app, for example, opens settings. 4 finger swipe and you are back where you were. I use it quite a bit.
This absolutely blew my mind. I’ve been using an iPad for many years now and split screen was the only tip that I knew out of all the ones you mentioned. Outstanding and extremely helpful. Thank you.
Very useful video, thanks. I don't have the real (expensive!) pencil and screenshot with my compatible pencil don't work ... 😢, but I have been using the side buttons for that anyway . Keyboard tricks are great. Ta.
Found you by accident and am I ever so ever stunned. I had no idea of any of this when I was gifted an iPad several years ago. I’m 75, attended one class on how to open and close, find apps, and the basics most of which I forgot after I left. 😮 I’m “adopting” your channel, subscribing, following , as well as reviewing your class many times over. Thank you so very much!!!
Wow ! I learnt a lot. Very well explained with adequate demonstration and much easier to follow. Please keep it up as I never knew most of capabilities . Will now practice and hope to learn more on an ongoing basis .Thank you
Very informative, I would add that taking the screenshot from the bottom left corner swiping diagonally up is also achievable using one’s finger, and Notes can be accessed swiping from bottom right corner diagonally up, other commands can be selected in settings under Multitasking and Gestures. 🙌🏼
FYI for those who have an iPad and a Windows computer.... Spotlight = the Windows 10 & 11 Start button, in case you weren't aware that it has worked pretty much the same way for years, e.g., calculations & conversions (though for the latter, you may need to specify what to convert to, rather than it assuming).
I had n0 idea about the split screen function..Thanks, saves having to have the iphone and ipad running simultaneously and going back and forth. Now that I have a mouse and keyboard for my ipad I look forward to watching your future videos while sipping a coffee with frothy milk!!!!!!
Another good one I use quite a lot is the ability to do a screenshot (like in Instagram & TH-cam where you're not able to do copy-paste) - and then use the tool that lets you copy text from the screenshot. I'd explain it here but I think it needs a video to show how it's done. I'm using it to copy your cheat sheet notes.
I’m so glad I saw this video. I love my Apple iPad and these tricks. None of them I knew of. I’m 78 years old. I’m on my iPad every day. Your video was perfect. Thank you so much and I’m passing this on to my iPad friends. I enjoy my iPad more than my computer. Keep up the good work you are very good at Giving the instructions and the information.
One of my favourite cheats is to use spit view and slide over, together. The screen I need in smallest view, I slide over & hide off the right hand side. I then Split View the main screen and open a third window. As I need the hidden window, I drag it out from the right and when finished I flick up from the bottom to hide it again. It is also possible to adjust the relative sizes of the main screens by dragging the handle, in between, to the left or right. Thanks for a nice set of tips.👍 Btw, I’ll be 80 next month and have been using iPads since my family bought one for my 70th birthday but there’s always something new you can learn. How about long pressing on some keys to get alternative or foreign characters? Just had another thought. One tip I use all the time is the space bar as a mouse to move the cursor faster & more precisely.
Wow. Thank You so very much for putting this together. I had no idea these existed. Please make more of these! iPhone/Mac tips like these would be great too. Well done!
Brilliant. Thank you. I've used the spotlight feature before very often to pull up an app or use search. But an app I would pull up was calculator, not realizing that I didn't have to. I do not have an Apple Pencil however using my apple finger (IFinger) I was able to use the slide from left hand corner for a screen shot. Thanks again
The drag from corner screenshot trick with Pencil is very useful. I use it all the time with just my finger. Also, when doing that on websites, I like to switch that screen capture to the grab full length web page.... which i often share into a pdf and save in Files.
Hi Brooke. Glad I found you & your channel. I appreciate your tutorials! I bought the Pencil Pro… do you have a recommended silicon grip that allows the pencil’s double tap to access the quick toolbar? Love the Spotlight feature! 🤯 Is there a Beginner’s video for Apple Notes? I saw all of your excellent videos on Notes but I need a Beginner’s Beginners intro. Thank you!
Wow! I can’t get over how much I was missing out on. I only knew about the swipe down for the characters over the main characters on the keyboard and I had no idea spotlight was more than an app locator. 😂 ty for such a helpful video!!
Oo I’m using the minimised keyboard to type this answer together with sliding over it to speed up typing! Works brilliantly! Just talking to it is even better! That split screen with slide over is new to me. I’ll be trying it in my tutoring next week. Thank you!
I like split screen for listening to TH-cam music while I read an ebook, or to watch a TH-cam video with my knitting pattern on the other side. I love the ruler tool to keep track of what row I’m on in my knitting chart. I use swipe from lower left often to take screenshots. Some of the other tips I already knew plus a few you didn’t mention but another commenter did, I already use too. What I learned is how to get the small floating keyboard with the swipe a word feature. Cool! The copy edit and paste edit was new to me. And also cool, I didn’t realize how useful swiping up from the right to make and see notes would be. Thank you Brooke. And btw there’s a sad stereotype out there about older people not being computer literate. Bah! Maybe some but not most of us. I’m 73 and just swiped my numbers in. 😂 👵🏻 🤗
@lynnewillette2654 Agree 100%, I hate when people comment “I’m 73, so all these tips are helpful.” You are not Methuselah! I’m 69, so you’re telling me that in four years I’ll be “OLD?!” Or are you implying I’m ALREADY old! NOPE!! 🤗😜
@@stephanieilluzzi7355, I think it’s more of a thing rather than age, of not growing up using one like the younger people of today, particularly people that perhaps did not work outside the home, or did not work in an industry where you had to learn how to use the computer. i’m a retired teacher so we were required to do computer classes all the time so I feel very literate most of the time with my technology. I do have a neighbor that is about my age that did not work outside the home and she is completely lost when it comes to technology.
Thanks for the video! My iPad keypad doesn’t have the secondary input options on the keys, I always wished it did! Can I get them??? I have an iPad Pro 12.9 2nd gen, running iOS 17.4 Thanks
i had to look this one up and apparently the 12.9 iPad Pros do not support the 'key flick' feature :( no idea why, hopefully it'll be supported in the future!
The keyboard tip I learned on my own. Just pondered and the old brain decided to make a move just swiped to the left on a key and shocked myself when the number I was going for appeared 😅of course it works more consistently when I swipe down. Thanks for your tips
Thank you! This popped up on my homepage this morning. I love being more productive and use my iPad heavily. I think my fave tip that surprised me was the pasting of edits in other photos! 🤯 I’d really like more tips about screenshots. I take a lot of ss and would like what more I can do with them to edit. I currently take a ss, click on it, edit it, save it and then I still have the original and the edited one.
This info is very helpful. For the past few weeks I was wondering why I would hit a letter (on the top row of the keyboard) and a number would pop up instead of the letter. Now I know that I have been swiping those keys instead of tapping direct. Big THANK YOU to you!
Thanks for the iPad tips. I use the M1 iPad Pro 12.9 inch. The multi-windowing Stage-Manager feature. This allows me to have up to 4 windows (Apps) opened in a Group that I can switch between. So I’m typically listening to TH-cam videos while I might be doing something productive. I can then switch to TH-cam if I need to view something interesting, then I can switch to email, then back to my Hamradio Smart SDR where I’m running FT8 (digital) contacts all over the world. Thanks again your tips are new to me and will help with undo, moving the keyboard around my floating windows - Good stuff I found out. Good stuff!
I find that TH-cam, when I have it running, automatically shows up as a screen-in-screen feature on most other apps that I open up while it's running. (Without me doing anything about it.)
My granddaughter showed me the one where you slide down the t to get the 5. She said to me, didn’t you wonder why those little numbers were there. I, of course, never gave those little numbers and characters a second thought. Your tips are really useful. Thanks
immediately under the video should be the video title in bold and under that you should see some writing with ‘…more’. if you click on more it will open up the entire video description box where i add some helpful information under each video. scroll down a bit until you see ‘cheat sheet’! hope this helps :)
I find from time to time I have 10 or more apps open, is there a way to close all apps with just a couple keystrokes. I only know of closing each app and then going to the next one and closing that, there must be a close all apps trick?
I just ran into your video and I would like to ask you if you have already created a video on how to use your iPad instead of taking your heavy laptop to give classes. Specifically, what, how to use it with a projector, if there’s any gadget similar to a usb for the iPad, which apps to have, etc. Thanks in advance. 🙋🏻♀️
So great! I had accidentally reduced the keyboard not knowing how it worked, could never recreate the action. I love the tip about sliding from the letters to the symbols and numbers. Thank you.
Thank you so much for this video. I have been an iPad user for many years and I learned something new today. I really appreciate that. I’ve been splitting the screen by opening an app and putting it into the dock by doing so, then opening another app placing it in the dock, then dragging the second app onto the same screen as the first app and then sizing it to the proportion I want. I hope I just made sense.
These tips are fabulous! Over the many years I’ve used Apple products, more and more they’ve assumed that users ‘just know’ how to use the Ipad or Mac new features, but as you’ve shown, you don’t know what you don’t know unless you’ve been made aware what the capabilities are by videos like this. Thank you! I’ve just subscribed to your channel!
Those are handy tips, thanks, the spotlight tip sounds very useful and is one I’m likely to use the most. The shrunk keyboard is new to me and I since find the swipe input much faster and more accurate than pecking on the full size keyboard I’m going to try it first, in fact I’m using it to write this comment 😀 I find the multitasking dots at the top a nuisance, I hit them by accident too often and get split screens that I don’t want. It can be disabled in settings under multitasking options. But then some of your tips won’t work.
I love you. The 3-dot split screen "helper" at page-top drives me CRAZY & I had just asked in this comment section if I could get rid of it. Thank you! Now we'll see if it disables other things that I've come to rely on.
I thought this was really great because I am in no way very technical and always worried about pressing keys and mess something up. Very helpful I never knew I could do split screen …ha! I did know about pulling down the key though. Thanks and I hope you keep doing this!😊
I have been using an iPad for over ten years. I have purchased at least five. I am currently using the iPad Pro 11 inch. Everything in your video was new, great job. I plan on watching more. Also. I use my iPad every day. I do have an external keyboard from ZAGG.
Great video keep it up. I have an iPad mini, but it cost me a fortune because I got the one with a lot of memory, and I use it for all kinds of stuff. And I bought a pen that’s not the apple pen but it works this as welland I love your tips on how to do a screen capture
@@brooketierney you deserve the credibility for a great video. Thank you very much for spending the time and teaching us a bit more about our technical devices.
Thx. I don’t mean my iPad, will not the same iPad ha ha 12 years or so. And some of these tricks I knew and some I didn’t and thank you so much for being logical and easy to follow through.
Hi, great tips 👍. The swipe down on keyboard for the background character is great. I hoped by swiping up would give me the uppercase character, seemed intuitive to me, also no joy ☹️.
Face recognition stopped working on my iPad some time ago. Having to punch a code every time it goes into sleep mode is a pain. How can I restore face recognition?
This was an incredible video! I gave it a thumbs up, saved it, and subscribed! Like several other ladies I’m 72 and and love my laptop, I will watch and rewatch this until I get it down. Thank you so much!!
The one thing I HATE about the split screen option is its existence on my safari bar. I apparently do a lot of jumping to the status bar, because 90% of the time, I land in the center and the split screen option shows up & annoys the heck out of me. I don't suppose there's a way to turn the darned thing off?
Right off the bat: Where do I find Spot light already looked in Apps and Systems tried pulling down on screen and no help
spotlight (essentially apple's word for search) is an iPad feature, so not a standalone app. usually you just pull down from the centre of your iPad homescreen and the search bar appears. if not, make sure your iPad has the latest software update downloaded!

This info is very helpful. For the past few weeks I was wondering why I would hit a letter (on the top row of the keyboard) and a number would pop up instead of the letter. Now I know that I have been swiping those keys instead of tapping direct. Big THANK YOU to you!
Glad it helped!
Oh dear; it’s David again. Now that I have saved your excellent presentation, how can I find it again?
Good stuff!
thanks for sharing!
Thanks
I was trying to figure out the small keyboard for almost a year coz the old ones aren't pinch option, not until I saw your vid! Thank youuuuu
Glad I could help!
Hey Brooke can you show me where the cheat sheet is? OMG these tricks n tips are the best
immediately under the video should be the video title in bold and under that you should see some writing with ‘…more’. if you click on more it will open up the entire video description box where i add some helpful information under each video. scroll down a bit until you see ‘cheat sheet’! hope this helps :)
I find from time to time I have 10 or more apps open, is there a way to close all apps with just a couple keystrokes. I only know of closing each app and then going to the next one and closing that, there must be a close all apps trick?
Thanks for these trips & tricks. I shall practice on them & send this video to my older sister as well. We’re both over 70 years old.
That is awesome!
Thank you.
Glad it helped!
Didn’t know any of these tips, thank you!
I would like to know how did you filmed this little piece with such an incredible sharpness. Thank you.
thank you! i shoot 4K using a Canon R50 :) i've added links to all the gear i use at the bottom of the video description if you want to know more!
So happy to find your channel. You explain everything clearly and precisely. Thank you!
So glad!
Great tips! Thank you.
Wow. This is great. I never knew any of these. Can you do more videos?? Not very technically oriented so I need all the help….especially seniors
Thanks for your tips. You don’t actually need an Apple Pencil to take a screenshot. A finger swipe from left corner to center also works.
Thanks for sharing!
Can you tell me how to remove a thumb print to open my iPad?
These tips are fabulous! Over the many years I’ve used Apple products, more and more they’ve assumed that users ‘just know’ how to use the Ipad or Mac new features, but as you’ve shown, you don’t know what you don’t know unless you’ve been made aware what the capabilities are by videos like this. Thank you! I’ve just subscribed to your channel!
Thank you so much! I love my iPad but do not know how to use applications like these.
You’re welcome 😊
Those are handy tips, thanks, the spotlight tip sounds very useful and is one I’m likely to use the most. The shrunk keyboard is new to me and I since find the swipe input much faster and more accurate than pecking on the full size keyboard I’m going to try it first, in fact I’m using it to write this comment 😀
I find the multitasking dots at the top a nuisance, I hit them by accident too often and get split screens that I don’t want.
Thanks and I hope you keep doing this!😊
thanks for the kind words!
wow all these bring me back to 2002 when I bought the samsung note 1, these features are new but not new
I loved this! I enjoyed learning how to use my iPad fully! 😊thank you 😊
You're so welcome!
Ninguno sabia hacer muchas gracias
Fantastic video! Thanks!
V
Thanks for watching! 👍
How do I stop my iPad freezing? What I do at the moment is re-boot but I never understand what causes it? Your advice and knowledge is appreciated 😊
How do you split screen on Skype?
Spot light is awesome and the split screen on web browser is way too cool
Thank you...what great tips! I have to re-watch to absorb all. Where do I get an apple pencil? $?
thank you! i've added an amazon link for the apple pencil i use in the video description box.
I love the split screen. I play Solitaire while listening to TH-cam.
I have been using an iPad for over ten years. I have purchased at least five. I am currently using the iPad Pro 11 inch. Everything in your video was new, great job. I plan on watching more. Also. I use my iPad every day. I do have an external keyboard from ZAGG.
Great to hear!
fantastic! Love the pencil tips, which also work with non-apple pencils (many available for about 30usd)..thank you!
Thanks for sharing!
Very helpful, thank you. What does it mean “the description box down below”?
tap the …more button in the heading description
Spotlight was an eye opener thanks
glad it was helpful!
Thanks!
you’re very welcome! thank you so much for the support! i really appreciate it and it helps me make more videos 🙏🏻🙏🏻
Great video keep it up. I have an iPad mini, but it cost me a fortune because I got the one with a lot of memory, and I use it for all kinds of stuff. And I bought a pen that’s not the apple pen but it works this as welland I love your tips on how to do a screen capture
thank you!
@@brooketierney you deserve the credibility for a great video. Thank you very much for spending the time and teaching us a bit more about our technical devices.
How do I save pictures from my iPad to a hard drive
Thank you sooo much for these tips. I didn’t know about any of them. Now I just might use my iPad more😊😊😊
Thx. I don’t mean my iPad, will not the same iPad ha ha 12 years or so. And some of these tricks I knew and some I didn’t and thank you so much for being logical and easy to follow through.
How long does it take to pair the Apple Pencil?😊
thanks for the video I learned a lot. I'm not much of a tech guy I learned about all but I do not have an Apple Pencil.
thanks for the support!
Hi, great tips 👍. The swipe down on keyboard for the background character is great. I hoped by swiping up would give me the uppercase character, seemed intuitive to me, also no joy ☹️.
oh that would be great! maybe one day 🤞🏻
I didn’t know any of them…photo edit is game changer for me. I edit my photos for my Etsy shop and I can’t wait to use the photo edit tip…thank you.
Happy to help!
Face recognition stopped working on my iPad some time ago. Having to punch a code every time it goes into sleep mode is a pain. How can I restore face recognition?
Just bought my first ever iPad 2 hours ago. Watching the video for tips and tricks to navigate it. Very helpful video
glad it was helpful! enjoy!
This was an incredible video! I gave it a thumbs up, saved it, and subscribed! Like several other ladies I’m 72 and and love my laptop, I will watch and rewatch this until I get it down. Thank you so much!!
Thank you so much!!
This was amazing!!! I learned so much!!! Thank you!!! 😊❤
You are so welcome!
I did not know about using spotlight as a calculator
The one thing I HATE about the split screen option is its existence on my safari bar. I apparently do a lot of jumping to the status bar, because 90% of the time, I land in the center and the split screen option shows up & annoys the heck out of me. I don't suppose there's a way to turn the darned thing off?
