I'll agree that the Sony fanboyism is pretty annoying.... but Jason puts these videos up for free and they have a lot of good information. Good stuff Jason. Keep it up!

It's called marketing. He's sponsored by SONY, if you were sponsored by anyone, Im sure you'd be vomiting the name of the company that decided to sponsor you as well.

Jesus.. Go watch 1 of the million Nikon fanboys here on TH-cam which is spitting lies about Sony if that makes you feel a bit better! Have fun! ;)

Got a notification on my iPhone that Jason Lanier has just posted a new video on TH-cam. Took my wife to work this morning, made myself a coffee, went to my office, turned on my computer, sat back in my office chair, and then joined the class at Southwesten College on my 24" ASUS monitor, and enjoyed Jason's frank inspiring discussion. Well done!

Just accidentally ran across your videos when looking up on the A7RII, while I was waiting for mine for a few weeks. Then I watched this 2 series video and it really hit me and pushed me hard. Going to take a step out of my comfort zone of landscapes and learn flash, posing, and lighting now! Thank you Jason!

Thank you Jason, it's really refreshing to hear some heartfelt honesty in the world of photography. You manage to cut cleanly through the bull and the facade, and provide complete gems of information that have a real practical application. I've only recently "found" your videos online, but I'm glad I did! Keep up the great work man!

Blew it out of the water Jason! Thanks for making this available. I've been shooting since the 70's: I follow 3 or 4 photographers online, you've become my favorite mentor. Keep up the no b.s. approach.
    Cheers...

Jason, thank you for the honest straight forward approach and most of al showing us great images does not require great amounts of money invested in equipment. Knowing how to use what you have is an investment that pays more then that $10000 dollar picture taker you have no clue how to set. Keep up the great work Jason. Remember all free your mind and create what is in your heart.

I was reading am article where a bunch of photographers would give their tip on marketing yourself. Amongst them was a wedding photographer as well. And indeed you're right: all photos have blown out skies. All of them!

Another great video! I was at work when I started it but couldn't finish because I had to a class to coach but I couldn't wait to get home to finish it. Thanks for sharing and being very straight forward about what it takes to become a photographer. I though my fire was as hot as it could get but after watching your inspiring videos my passion to become a photographer has grown to new heights.

One thing I've learned about photography is that most photographers try to tell a story from their photos. Honestly that's one problem I have when taking photos. I have other problems too, but being able to tell a story is my main one. I absolutely love photography and can only hope to get better.

Your advice is, in SO MANY WAYS, the opposite of what guys like Jonathan Canlas and Kim Messina offer. Both when it comes to technique and when it comes to business. And they're not nobodies by ANY means. That being said, much of what you say rings so very true. I enjoy learning from you because it challenges me to think differently. It challenges to choose a different standard, or at least a unique standrd - unique to me. I don't want to shoot for the same goal everyone else shppts for. If I do that, i'll at best be the second version of what everyone else is trying to be, while the best version will remain that standard i was shooting for. You inspire me to think differently and think of my personal standard/goal as quite simply to be one who is constantly pushing the envelope of what I am capabe of. To become my own stylist, my own artist, my own unique voice rather thhan to constantly mimic others. Thank you for your inspiration. If I can ever afford it.... or WHEN that day comes, I'd love to go to one of your workshops, to learn yes, but moreso to meet you in person and shake your hand and with that shake thank you for what you do. If you're ever curious, you can see my current work. i'm always trying to tweak it and bring out my voice more and more, little by little. www.n1826.com and btw, you're a major contributing factor to why i switched from Nikon to Sony. Thanks man!

I'm seriously hoping you will come to Puerto Rico to offer a workshop. You talk real world man! Wonderful video! My aja moment in this part one was "be a risk taker" & "get out of your comfort zone". I save every video you put out there. It's a great learning experience for me. I have a Sony A77II and even though it has wizardry, I always shoot RAW and in manual mode. Sometimes I try Aperture Priority, but always wind up shooting in manual. I'm still learning my camera, but what a joy it would be for me to go to one of your seminars!

  • @redlumberjack8320

@Jason Lanier : first of all, thank you for the content you upload on your channel and all the information you provide. I have learned a lot watching your videos. I also agree with your work ethics (don't be lazy, go out of your comfort zone, keep learning...).
I don't really expect you to answer me, because this video is 3 years old and I'm pretty sure you don't have the time to read all comments and to respond, but I'll try anyway. You talk a lot about wedding photographers and blown-out skies and the absence of indoor pictures etc... I do agree that photographers need to learn artificial light and use it when necessary. But on a wedding day, when you have to "document" what happen, and follow people around, and have an eye out for what might be happening, how can you realistically use artificial light ? I went to your website and had a look at your wedding gallery. All of the pictures there are posed, prepared, "directed" as in a movie production, so you had the time to set up lighting. But most weddings (at least in France) don't really leave room for that. You go from one place to another, and the bride and groom are less and less asking for posed pictures (and they usually don't really have time for it on the wedding day itself). Apart from an on-camera flash bouncing off the ceiling or the wall, when you work alone, you don't really have time to set up any other kind of light, let alone organize a series of posed and well prepared shots. What would be your advice for that type of wedding ? What can you do, alone, apart from proposing a "trash the dress" shoot or a "pre-wedding" shoot with posed pictures ? Don't you have to rely on natural light for most of the day ?
Thanks beforehand for your answer, if you ever have the time ;)
    All the best,
    TRL.

haha, I love how you said you don't understand what the numbers on manual flash means! It's so true though that probably 99% of people don't understand it. Props to you as a pro for admitting and sharing with everyone to make them feel better. I just got an HVL-F58AM for my a6000 (w/ adapter) and I've been on TTL the whole time and was confused cause I always expose for the sky and my subjects don't look right sometimes. So now I know to use flash in manual! Thanks again!

    Great video Jason.
You would be a good cowboy because you shoot straight from the hip(talking about your honesty.)
    But I have one request.
The audio wasn't the best, to the point when people in the workshop asked questions it was hard to understand what they said.
So if you could repeat their question "so and so asked me if..." then go into your answer.

I have had my A6000 for a few days now. I carefully compared the image quality of this camera with a 16-70/4 Zeiss (664g) to that of Canon 5DII + 24-105/4 (1704g). It was difficult to conclude which one is better. That means I don't loss image quality at all by switching to Sony. It's selling points to me are the weight, and numerous features the Canon does not have. I love this camera in every aspect except the following disappointments: 1. Shutter noise - I expect a camera like this to be nearly silent. But it turned out as noisier as a DSLR. 2. Short battery life. Also, the original charger can only charge battery inside the camera with USB cable. It does not have a battery holder. So I had to go to Ebay to buy a battery charger, and I wished I could find a charger that can charge two batteries at the same time, in case I have several busy days in a roll. 3. Limited freedom of movement of the tilting LCD. Technically it shouldn't be difficult to have an LCD with much more degree of freedom, like many other camera. But for the A6000, it's only slightly better than a fixed LCD.

You guys might not like the Sony pushing or him but this is sound stuff. Personally he's entertaining. Also the thing about not shooting shots for the sake of just doing something for a shoot (except weddings) is spot on. The reason people liked my stuff over people who'd been doing it longer. For the most part I just uploaded the bangers. I'd list my stuff but I don't wanna spam. Just message me.
But yeah guys he's working a job. To make money and get free gear he pushes the brand. Don't hate on that. You would too. So please

You mentioned doing a lot of free shoots in your earlier days to learn posing and that you "butchered" them until you got it right. Since this implies that the shots may not have been that good at the time, what did you offer in return for the subject taking time out of their schedule for you to shoot them? In other words, what did you offer as an incentive to the subject?

41:54 Bracketing don't really have to be HDR - you can use it for manuel digital blending. 'HDR' is not equal to 'Photomatix tonemapped HDR'.
You talk a lot about the Sony A7s... you can say that it has like single-raw-HDR because of the amazing Dynamic range.
42:35 Photographer/graphical designer..... be a digital artist instead!

The guy front-right arms/crossed. He doesn't seem to be enjoying this session. Was he offended by what he heard?

What glasses are those? They are niceee.
BTW: great insight on these 2 videos about being direct, to the point and working hard.

You say you don't use HDR but you are real heavy with the 'Clarity' slider?

I found it odd that you said that you don't do HDR or Bracketing. I have watched a lot of your videos (probably all of them), and in some of them I swear I hear your shutter snap 3 times when you take a shot.

    • @JasonLanierPhotography
      @JasonLanierPhotography  9 ปีที่แล้ว

so basically that's just because I have an itchy trigger finger. I also snap a few out of habit because I prefer to have a few to choose from from each set due to eyes closing etc. If you watch enough of my videos you will see some (like San Francisco Rotolight) where I'm snapping away but you can watch the back of my camera and see they aren't bracketed.
Furthermore, if you understand bracketing you'd know that the shutter speed will change when you bracket. So if you hear me fire 3 shots off, you'd also hear the shutter speed changing. So no, I don't do HDR.

That explains it. I was wondering how you were doing that without a tripod. The fact is, you weren't. Really awesome work. If wish I could have met you at WPPI. Maybe next year. BTW, I figured out the location of that cave in the Nevada desert and why you shot it at night.

Very good instructional video. Be that as that is, there are two women in the audience that are hot and could be models as much as, if not more than, they want to be photographers.

      Thoughts in response/reply...
      1) You are not going to begin to tell me by beginning to tell me? Typical social justice warrior lack of mentality.
      2) You have no authority over me, so it makes no difference to begin to tell me anything, especially since you have given me zero reason to value you or your opinions.
      3) "Wrong" and "Right" are all subjective intellectually... however, you have been conditioned and more than likely are living that conditioning, of what is acceptably correct or incorrect. That is called being immature... childish.
      4) I am a guy and pretend to be nothing other than. I have no desire to be a mangina and I never will be. When a woman is "hot", whether I say anything or do anything or think anything other than think that she is hot, she is still hot. Whether you do not see her as hot is irrelevant to me or to the whole of society. By one or many, the fact will remain true that men and women will appreciate her being hot.
      5) Like it or not, there are a percentage of women in this world, albeit a rather small percentage, that are good looking above and beyond what most women are. Your jealousy is probably warranted... and probably is why you are projecting such vile slander.
Go run off now and find someone to absolve you of all of your sins so you can start anew sinning.

As a dues paying National Parks member I can understand the photographer's concern but also our parks are supported by members, visitors, donations and as you may well know all of our parks need more funding. If you think your tax dollars support the Park system you may want to look at just what you spend your money on and where those dollars go. Most of us pay sales taxes which support your local municipality, gas taxes and vehicle registration taxes (both quite low in most states) go for road costs (maintenance, construction) which do not amount to much and infrastructure is costly. Then what other taxes are you paying? As a former resident of San Francisco (and continued supporter)National Park Lands need support and protection.

Jeff G That was when I was shooting with Nikon. A mixture between the D3 and the D700.
