  • The great drama of Martin Luther’s life comes alive in this vivid portrayal of the penniless monk’s quest for truth-a quest that would re-shape the church, and the world.
Martin Luther triggered a seismic upheaval that rocked the western world in the 1500s-with an impact that continues to reverberate to this day. The great drama of Martin Luther’s life comes alive in this vivid portrayal of the penniless monk’s quest for truth-a quest that would re-shape the church, and the world. Perhaps the most faithful movie about Luther’s life ever made, the film does not shy away from the deep theological questions-and answers-that mark Luther as one of the most influential people of the last thousand years.
    Director: David Batty
Starring: Padraic Delaney, Gerharde Bode, Jr., Bruno Grzeszykowski

Thank you for posting this documentary. The overview presented provides a starting point to pursue so many important lines of inquiry such as church history, the divisions within Protestantism, the bases of church authority. and, most importantly, how these things measure up against the fundamental truth of Scripture.

Luther was the one chosen to breast the storm, stand up against the ire of a fallen church, and strengthen the few who were faithful to their holy profession. He was ever fearful of offending God. He tried through works to obtain His favor, but was not satisfied until a gleam of light from heaven drove the darkness from his mind and led him to trust, not in works, but in the merits of the blood of Christ. He could then come to God for himself, not through popes or confessors, but through Jesus Christ alone. .

Luther's visitations of German parishes uncovered many plainly ignorant clergy and helped motivate the production of his Catechisms, which he specifically noted in his introductions were both for family and clerical (clergy) learning and meditation. My favorite " problem" he came across was a report that a parish priest had preached "si non caste, tamen caute" (if you can't be good, be careful.)

As I feared, this production, while factual and well done, paints Luther as an uber-Christian. It totally ignored two of Luther's most devastating effects on the Germany of his day, and the global attitude that persists to today. His carelessness and failure to think about logical results of his teaching took his treatise on Christian liberty and in the hands of the peasantry gave rise to a civil revolt that cost many lives. In attempting to undo the damage he penned a condemnation of the revolt that supported the over reaction of the aristocracy. That, however, was minor compared to his unScriptural condemnation of Jews, not only in his treatise "On the Jews and Their Lies," but in other writings having a much greater effect on the attitudes of common folk. His explanation of the combined ninth and tenth commandments in his Large Catechism is a revolting spew of centuries old hatred aimed by "the church" at Jews, stereotyping and perpetuating myth in contradiction to the Bible's record of God's neverending love for the children of Abraham.

This "Return to Grace" fallacy ignores that Luther et. al broke away from the font of Truth, the Catholic Church. If you claim by splintering off he saved Christianity, this makes no sense. It is a simple matter who fought to purify the Church from within the Church, who persevered, versus who thought they, individually, knew better than Christ in forming the everlasting Church. Instead, there is now an estimated 40,000 derivative "churches," each started by an individual with "a secret only they were privy to." All these splinter churches ended up having the same, or worse, problems as the Catholic Church. As a Catholic I am wise enough to know the devil constantly works to erode Truth - the thinnest of vails of confusion and distraction is sufficient to mislead humans away from salvation. I observe ill-formed Catholics pealing away to Protestant denominations because of the lack of information, of history. I get it - I understand why they can be mislead away from the sacraments, part of it is not their fault, but their bad decision is ALL their responsibility, can't and won't sugarcoat it. The Protestants who return to the "trunk of the tree" study and become aware of glaring inconsistencies in whoever founded their denomination. They use reason to realize the Catholic Church is the only true apostolic Church created by Christ who warned strongly about wolves in sheeps clothing Matthew 7:15... Those ministers who loudly preach against the Catholic Church rely on disproven tropes over and over again, destroying their credibility. Martin Luther was a disturbed man who went rogue on the Church - and the schism has caused harm ever since.

(Which historically he spoke badly about any belief system that wasn't his own) And he said the Catholic church was treating the Jewish people like dogs because the church made it difficult for them to convert over to Christianity and that they should be received with Love. Who knows though? If he was reading the same Bible You and I might read, hating God's chosen people wouldn't make much sense.

A Return to Disgrace-more like it.
Martin Luther let his notoriety go to his head and he became the monster he preached against. Your film conveniently ignores Luther's ego, gluttony, alcoholism, anti-semitism, and violent diatribes against those who disagreed with him.
He also openly recommended torture and murder for varied groups of people he deemed undesirable; like a proto-Nazi. Hitler actually used Luther in his propaganda of hate.
Satan had taken over Luther long before he died a man sick in body and mind.

Martin Luther was a Catholic Augustinian monk who taught baptism for salvation right up until his final writing 'the Jews and their lies'. He never understood, believed or taught faith alone. He taught the gnostic teachings of the manichean Augustine. He also persecuted and killed Christians (who did always believe grace alone), just like Augustine did. Both of them are in hell.

How about Apostle Paul, he persecuted hundreds of Christians before too just as Luther and Augustine did, do you think he's in hell now too? All the people God used in the bible are imperfect to our eyes just like Luther, but they were perfect to God for his purpose, bible said God is perfect, what do you think about God's choice of those people?
