on 1975 yamaha rd 350 there is a tiny screw that holds tripometer knob on. was so small could not see and I tryed to pry off and snapped it. after piece snapped was able to see tiny screw and removed will try to use solder gun to melt piece back together. I used pb blaster

the tachometer may have old grease or dust on the pointer axis. You are very skilled, dismantle the panel, clean the machine and lubricate again. Congratulations on the videos.

My bike looks identical to yours and has the same problem! The speedometer and tachometer were both acting like that. Slow to climb and very slow to return. I went one step further and took them apart.
If you take off the acorn nuts on the back, you can unplug bulbs, then remove from the bike. After that, the rubber ring will pull off the front. Next is the tricky part. You need to use some small screw drivers to undo the crimp between the front and back metal cups.
This let me get inside the assemblies to spray some WD-40 (I know it's not a good lube, but I wanted to break down whatever old grease might be clogged up in there slowing them down). I also worked the needle back and forth by hand and it seemed to move freely.
My speedometer is working much better now, but only a slight improvement on the tachometer. I'll be watching to see if you have more luck than me!!

inside the tach are what are called jewels, basically they are bearings like in a watch. they tend to chip or crack over time and bumps.it is not something fixable, unless you are clock repair person. to open the tach basically you destroy it. mmi 92

@@seventiesmetal8673 I would 2. To open the tach be gentle and make a shallow cut on the band around the glass and body. Then peel it off like the old sardine tins.

I tried to reply once before, but came back unable to deliver, so I'll reply here. The bushing isn't on the shaft, there are two screws that go in from the side that holds a part that tucks in under the bell. Remove that part and there is a little brass bushing that I cleaned and lubed. Cleaned all the other rotating parts with a little brake cleaner, then penatrating oil. Lastly, with a lint free rag, I wiped off the excess. I then put a drop of chain lube in the little cup bushing and reassembled.

that's a nice video but in Indian RD 350 the needle has lots of shakes while to be on a RPM .

Tachometer needle should not shake a lot, it should be smooth and steady

Ah ok, try changing the tacho wire OR dismantling the tachometer and grease the internal parts. I will do the same with my tachometer now.

Did you ever correct the problem with your tachometer? Mine is doing the exact same thing.

Not yet. Planning to dismantle tachometer and grease internal parts. Will upload video when done.

I split mine open today, all it needed was cleaned up and greased the bottom brass bushing and crimped it back together with a brass punch and hammer. It works great now. Thanks for the inspiration and troubleshooting guidance. Now I have to dig into my speedometer to fix the loose face. I will take a photo of all the tools i used, if thats something that would interest you.

Thanks for the tip! I will try to fix mine during the weekend. Please send any photos you have, will be very helpful. Which grease did you use?

I managed to open my tachometer. The brass bushing you are referring to, is it in the center of the coil spring? Do you have any picture of the brass bushing you greased?
