  • This video is the fourth in a series about the Elements of Art and Design. These seven elements (line, shape, value, form, texture, color, and space) are found in every work of visual art, whether the artist put them there on purpose or not. Understanding the elements and how they work together is can help artists more effectively create the aesthetic they're trying for. Watch the whole Elements of Art Playlist: • Elements of Art & Design
This video focuses on the fourth element: form. Form refers to the third dimension - depth. Even a flat square drawn on a sheet of paper has a certain amount of depth, especially compared with how that square would look on a different surface, such as a brick wall.
There are many tricks for drawing/painting to create the illusion of 3D forms. To learn how, check out my 3D Forms and Spaces playlist: • 3D Forms and Spaces
Look at your favorite works of art, and see how the element of form is used in them. Look at your own artwork, and see how you can use more or less depth to create different effects.
