    Martin Campbell when he was directing GoldenEye was the prototype Chris Macquarie (Mission Impossible director), they both know what films should look like and never go overboard with Handheld fight scenes.

    I find Goldeneye to be the best but I do find myself watching The World is Not Enough more. I also find Natalya to actually be very underrated. I think shes a really strong written character and I actually never noticed that they dressed her down, i still found her extremely beautiful in the film and still do, but i do get what you guys are saying.

    Can't argue, Goldeneye is PB's best. However, I feel he looked more the part in later films. Meaning, dressed a little more rugged and had a closer cropped hairstyle. To me, he just looked better or more the role than Goldeneye.

    Goldeneye was the first-ever Bond movie I saw. It came out when I was 10 years old and was my intro to the whole series. For that (admittedly biased) reason that I think that not only is Goldeneye Brosnan's best by far, it might be my favorite Bond movie of all time.

    GoldenEye definitely IS Brosnans best Bondfilm.
    Probably the most perfect Bondfilm when it comes to plot, cast, effects, action, seriousness vs Humor, theme song graphic design and so forth. There´s just nothing wrong with it. And Eric Serras score is just awesome. It derives from Barry´s style a lot, but that doesn´t make it bad. It´s probably one of the very best Bond scores from the post Barry era.

    I agree with what was mentioned in the video. GoldenEye is Brosnan’s best film if you are rating all the elements and giving it a score (I actually rate it around 93%). I prefer to watch TWINE though and I enjoy TND despite personally disliking the villains. GoldenEye was the first bond film I saw in theaters - my older sister took me to see it as a teenager. I grew up watching the Connery and Moore films with my dad.

    Without a doubt this one is Brosnans best.
    The script was terrific,featuring a perfect balance of character, story and action
    The music was awful,of course,but I’ve even gotten used to that over the years.
    Unlike you guys though,I actually thought he was just great in his first portrayal-a perfect combination of Connery’s tough edge and Moore’s charm.
    This series of in depth reviews of these films has been excellent!

    Great discussion 👍 I was actually happy that Brosnan didn't get to do Daylights. Having watched Remington Steele, I just thought he was a pretty boy. The delay was good for him. As he aged, he developed a tougher look and more gravitas. It was a great debut, but I think he hit his stride in TWINE.

    Despite ranking it last of the Brosnan era... unpopular opinion : I still like Die Another Day. Yeah, it's stupid but it's entertaining. When I think some olders Bond are stupid(er) AND boring. Other unpopular opinion : I love Serra score (except maybe the car chase with Onatop in Monte-Carlo, even if I don't hate it either).

      You know what, I'm with you on this... sort of. Die Another Die is my favourite among the truly bad Bond films (ahead of AVTAK, Moonraker, DAF and Spectre; I'm not counting QoS among the truly bad ones, that's MY personal unpopular opinion). As for the GoldenEye score, the Monte Carlo car chase music and the closing credits song are godawful, but I actually like the rest of Serra's score, too.

    Interesting review, but you are so wrong on Natalya. Just like Bond & Alek are equals, so is Natalya & Boris. She is the one who discovers that the base is in Cuba, she redirects The GoldenEye weapon to fire at the base instead of London, and she provides with the helicopter which helps Bond escape in the end. In fact, she is one of the most proactive and useful Bondgirls
    in the whole series. I cant believe how you guys missed this. The plot is solid, the gunbarrel, pre title sequence, theme song+title sequence, supporting cast = all fantastic. GoldenEye is simply one the top movies in the Bond series. In my opinion, its the best.

    First off, I just wanted to say I love these videos and I have pondered this theory before as a huge Bond fan. The main reason why I have always been able to sympathize with the theory is GoldenEye. This is my favorite Bond film and one of my favorite movies in general. I think Brosnan's Bond portrayal is special in this one. Of course, this was my first Bond per say and definitely the first new entry in my lifetime. The N64 game obviously goes hand in hand with this film as both are iconic parts of my childhood. Best opening, and best chase (tank chase through St. Petersburg) in the franchise. I was always fascinated by the Russia location in general. There just aren't any key movies I can think of that take place there. The Cold War definitely played a big part in that through all those years.

    I could not get into Pierce Brosnan as Bond. I remember when Remington Steel was on and everyone was saying how he would make a perfect Bond and i just didnt see it, I mean he looks the part but there was always something slight about him and in Goldeneye when he is running with a machine gun it looks like its too heavy for him to carry. As for the first film being each actor's best I would say only On Her MAjesty's, Daylights and maybe Casino would fit that bill......From Russia With Love is Connery's best one and I think either The Spy Who Loved Me or For your Eyes Only are Moore's best.

  • @simonbrunner3062

    28:56 YOU DID NOT! HOW DARE YOU!?
    In all seriousness, I love your videos and I know that if you ask three Bond fans you get four different opinions, and that's okay. But at this point I need to ask: Have you even watched the movie before making the video?
    Natalya is essential to the resolution of the climax in GoldenEye. Who stopped the satellite from being fired by making it crash and burn in the Earth's atmosphere? Sure, Bond blocked the antenna, but that would have had zero effect on the execution of the villains' scheme, hadn't the satellite's guidance system been previously reprogrammed. Bond couldn't have done that himself. He did what he does best: Use a gadget to create a distraction and then fight the main villain one-on-one. But neither would have stopped London from being thrown back into the middle ages. On top of that, Natalya gets bonus points for tracking the villains to Cuba and for hijacking a helicopter to make Bond's last-second escape possible. In fact, Natalya is a prime example of a Bond girl that doesn't need to be a kickass fighter/agent/soldier (or in other words: Bond's equal) to be essential to saving the world as opposed to a mere damsel in distress.
    One more note regarding "show, don't tell": Yes, there are instances in GoldenEye where this rule is broken, but you're giving movies like Thunderball way too much credit in comparison. Thunderball had Fiona Volpe give a lenghty speech about how she's not Pussy Galore 2.0 and how she's still evil despite having just slept with Bond. That was the opposite of "show, don't tell". Not to mention the whole villainous scheme, which is verbally explained before being shown.

    • @leitercia
      @leitercia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Simon Brunner That’s and interesting point. It just feels like after she has spiked Boris and found the base in Cuba, she isn’t there to do much else. I believe she looks like a capable character, but they didn’t really give her much to do in that respect. She seems to disappear until she shows up later and hijacked the helicopter to rescue bond, which is of course a great moment. But I might have to rethink this position when I do a rewatch.

    • @simonbrunner3062
      @simonbrunner3062 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@leitercia I'm just surprised you didn't mention her reprogramming the satellite. That was the whole point of her coming to Cuba with Bond. Maybe the problem is that what she does is not a physical activity that looks spectacular on-screen. We as the audience get to see her at the computer, but we still need some explanation in form of dialogue to understand what she's done.
      But I think that was executed quite well. Boris mocks her for working only on the satellite's guidance system and having no access to the actual weapon. Only to realize that she never intended to disarm the weapon, but to make the whole satellite crash and burn. That's clever writing in my book. If you want a Bond girl to come across as strong and making a contribution, it's always easy to make her Bond's equal and show her kick some ass. But as I said, Natalya is not Bond's equal. She's not even Boris' equal. But she still manages to use her particular skill set to save the day.

    • @leitercia
      @leitercia 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@simonbrunner3062 Excellent point! Perhaps the movie is just so focused on the fisticuffs that I didn't even remember where Natalya was or what she was doing, but you're right, it's her contribution that blows up the satellite and saves the day! You definitely made me rethink this point! Thank you sir!

    Well, after a reprieve with Dalton, we're back to silly season and cartoon characters come to life. Fortunately, this is the one Brosnan outing I can stomach because the rest of the movie itself is so good. It was almost written for a bad ass like Dalton. Brosnan is an example of a guy who just looks like James Bond when he wears a suit. He's the poster boy for what Bond should look like. Too bad that's all he was to me.

    Brosnan is probably my least favourite Bond. Goldeneye was clearly his best outing, mostly because the script still had some of the elements of a Timothy Dalton, tough super-spy film. Brosnan added some softness to the character without being a total pussy, which is one of my main criticisms of his future Bond adventures. I much prefer the films that are closest to Fleming's novels. Bond isn't just a male model with a gun in his hand. Connery was the most effective at blending the suave with the toughness, with Craig and Dalton doing a decent job themselves. Moore and Brosnan to me are the worst Bonds, because they abandon all realism and what you expect from a super-spy. He's reduced to simply a playboy with a gun in those films. Goldeneye is the one Bond by Brosnan or Moore that forces either actor to be remotely what you'd expect from a spy. It makes sense that Lazenby, a model non-actor, played Bond once. That seems to be what the film series has gone for more or less. They want someone who they can market and looks good on a poster. Whether he's believable in the overall role is irrelevant.

    Great video and analysis of Goldeneye as a whole but I disagree with you both on Natalya not being essential to the film. She tracks the villains to Cuba, she reprogrammes the Goldeneye satellite to crash and burn in the Earth's atmosphere instead of having it fire on London, she helps Bond defeat Alec Trevelyan by hijacking a helicopter thus distracting Alec long enough just so Bond could kick Trevelyan off of the Antenna Cradle, grab him and toy around with him before dropping him to his death. She is responsible for thwarting Trevelyan's plans and saving the world in the process. She definitely does deserve way more credit than you guys give her.
