The students were assembled outside the school after the earthquake, and kept together. There was uncertainty about whether they should remain there to be picked up by their parents. When the tsunami came ashore, they were still all together, and in hindsight everyone should've climbed up the hill - but it also should be pointed out that nobody could have foreseen the immense size of this disaster. Literally this was the largest earthquake to ever have occurred in Japan, and the largest tsunami as well. Nobody could've guessed the site of the school would've been inundated to the degree that it was.
Actually they were heading to another area roadway near the bridge.. If they had stayed at the school more children could have survived by running up the nearby hill. Only four did.
The school drill automatically should be up the hill until all is safe. Those kids didn't need to die like this. But hopefully the rest of the world can learn from this tragedy so it can be avoided in the future. To the parents of those lost children, every human interaction is like a butterfly landing on your hand. Magical. Special. Unique. But we know that amazing as it is, we can't keep it. So cherish those you love, for they are not gone. They live forever in our hearts and minds. Visit them in your dreams. I'm sorry you had such loss and pain. 😢💐🌈🏮
HOW CAN THIS HAPPENED!?,..IN A LAND WITH SEVERAL TSUNAMIS AND ERTHQUAKE....?!??!?!....I DON'T UNDERSTAND THAT!...POOR LITTLES KIDS....AND THE TEACHER AN STUPID PERSON..SORRY IF I'M RUDE...BUT NO..I CAN'T UNDERSTAND IT!....
@COCO I somewhat recall reading they did not have many drills & were never on the same page in regards to procedure, as they would either change or be misinterpreted due to vagueness. Also, keep in mind their culture of discipline & respect, a key factor why children refused to disobey their elders, despite the imminent danger.
9 years ago. The victims forever in my heart, never forget.

Because there was no real disaster plan in place ,the teachers were arguing about what to do.

The tsunami video at the beginning was in Natori City
Never forget
Can you imagine the survivors guilt and shame that one teacher must feel? He probably commuted suicide. Poor guy.
