I think it was the right choice as expanding that runway eastward would mean literally going over the main road and maybe even into the sea....expanding it west would be challenging due to terrain and existing housing. by doing what they did, they would be able to gauge the passenger load before deciding on further expansion. Also American Airlines plans to use the Embraer 175 aircraft with capacity for 76 passengers so that's a decent starting point, as they could easily increase the number of flight per day using the same aircraft as demand dictates. .....what do you think of this?
Honestly what I think should be done is to privatize this Ian Fleming, Negril aerodrome and Ken Jones and turn them into general aviation airports with a focus on private travel to higher end customers as well as inter transit from Sangster and Kingston by smaller jets and turbo props. The plans to expand the north cost highway to 4 lanes allows for faster access to Sangster which would eliminate the need to expand Fleming into a true international airport. I do agree with you though; any further development of this airport would be too expensive or almost impossible given the terrain and current housing in the area.
@@TheOne-xu5oy Spot on assessment, agreed!! Also, there's talk of making Negril aerodrome into an international airport, which I think would be a waste of money especially after all that has already been spent on Sangster. Alternatively, build a 4 lane hwy from Mobay to Negril would mean about a 30-40 minute commute that way locals and the tourist industry benefits...my humble opinion
@@patrickandrew2536 I agree with you on not expanding Negril Aerodrome into an Interntional airport, however i do support expanding it to the size of Flemming to serve that sector of the market. Jamaica's problem is interconnectivity by road, air, rail and sea, as it has always been. I remember when the train service used to run and it was a mistake to allow it to fall into disrepair, along with the disaster of Air Jamaica. My focus is the airports, cant help it aviation is my field. The government needs to continue with the road improvement projects Island with and fix up the smaller airports and privatize them. They may need to put towers at those airports if the traffic increases though. Whats your opinion about the current state of Sangster and Manley?
I agree with you. Proper infrastructure is so critical to effective development planning. With all the hotels, villas, homes, businesses etc… along the North Coast and the horrific traffic as a result, reactive planning (doing it afterwards) is not the most efficient. Now roads are being constructed but as plans are approved for all the development, the infrastructure including the roads, airports, utilities, stores, education, healthcare, MAINTENANCE etc… should be forethought and not afterthoughts . Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it ❤.
The smaller regional planes can use IFIA to relieve the congestion at Sangster. American Airlines and other carriers who use small regional planes are now expanding at Fleming to provide convenience to passengers going to that area. I’m sure the facilities will be updated soon.
Chris I agree with you. When Airlines start using the airport with the smaller jets, then the operators will see the need for a longer runway to accommodate the larger jets.
They need to build a new airport in Negril and not upgrade the airdrome. If the government is serious about aviation and tourism then Ken Jones need a longer runway and Vernom field should be brought back as soon as possible as a cargo airport.
Yup Ian Fleming International Airport and Negril International Airport All need Runway extension upgrades and there Terminals too Jamaican Government need to take there time and work on the Other 2 Airports for Expansion too and stop rushing to expand them just because they are trying to take the pressure off of the Other 2 Main International Airports in Jamaica The Norman Manley International Airport in Kingston and the Sangster International Airport in Montego Bay Awesome Video!!!!
Extending the runway will be expensive so they put it off because they could get business without extending it yet. By the way, the consultant hired to create the "master plan" for the development of Ian Fleming (projecting future traffic, etc) is the Spanish firm INECO which is the same one contracted to do the master plans for Sangster & Norman Manley airports. So the Airports Authority of Jamaica is not operating haphazardly but looking to generate value at Ian Fleming w/o wasting money.
@@Jamaicain5 the main road/highway would have to placed below the runway at extremely high cost then extended by reclaiming the nearby sea...that's too expensive for the limited traffic that wou, would, chose that airport over Sangster (which has the highest cost-effective volume of travelers and Kingston which the governmental centre/capital)...
The Ian Flemming runway is handicpped by space. For it to be significantly extended, the will have to reroute the main road and possibly drench the a section of the sea to reclaim land. Now the Negril airport has acres of space to extend the runway. They can easily double its length and build a proper international terminal.
By the way, Key West International Airport in Florida has a 5076 ft runway, only 320 ft longer than Ian Fleming. Not ALL international airports are HUGE. The plan was to increase IFIA's runway by 700ft, to a max of (4769 + 700 = ) 5469 ft. So it is going to be a smaller more "regional" airport regardless.
"Wow"! and "unbelievable" for sure, "the way people drive" my brother. Look at 9:56 on the video. Truck and car at the same time pushing him to the shoulder.
The 'International' designation of an airport is not necessarily related to its size or passenger numbers. It usually means that it is an entry point into Jamaica from another country, i.e. it has Customs facilities.
When Atl was expanding its airport they encounter a problem with one of their runway because of the highway so constructed a bridge for the runway over the highway.
Jamaica been holding back by pnp for years and sangster is a nightmare.. I took me 2 hours on a Saturday for a 10 minutes drive off top road to the airport a airport in st Ann’s will help significantly
I agree with your thoughts on the idea of why not make it bigger/longer from start, but I think it’s a start and before long the runway is gonna be extended
The reason y American Airlines posponed service to the airport 2 years ago, Ian Fleming nuh ready yet....the government should be looking forward to upgrade n update this airport. It has a world-class name, but not living up to it. I was even suggesting the main road be rerouted into the hills, n use the landspace to expand the runway n bulid a bigger terminal building.
I agree with you 100% and made some of the same observations myself. Let’s hope that this is just a start and expansion is planned for the not too distant future. Eminent domain might have to come into play and/or creating new land where none is presently.
Yes i agree they should expand this airport. I watch stewy plane spotting every week and yes everytime a new plane comes in at the airport. Yes they should. Jamaica is going to get busier years to come cudoz to Jamaica 🇯🇲 a yaad me come from
I cannot agree or disagree...I need to see the ficibility study of the surrounding environment. Etc displacement of residents, terrains, natural habitat such as trees and animals, the opportunity cost to Jamaica etc..Negril maybe different because of more open lands, and its a relatively flat swampy area..
Soon they will get an extension done let’s see how the flights come in , the airport is in the right location ,I do believe after a year or two we will see the A320, 737 Max!!
As someone who lives 1 mile from Ian Fleming, you should consider that not everyone wants a huge aricraft with lots of noise, traffice etc invading the neighborhood. Bad enough the smaller jets coming in. Additonally over the last 10 years the traffic has increased substantially which adds to the noise from large trucks going back and forth. The runway also has its limitations both on the back end and the front end which would need to go across the street. I hope that they do not expand the runway. The invasion of everything will not be managed well by the small community and road network.
Easier said than done, one side you would have to build a bridge over main road and would not get much more runway and the other end is a valley rhat would have be dumped up and even rhen the main road would run into if again for not much gain in length to land a 737 or A320....rhe airport was not physically upgraded...simply a name change and customs placed at the airport which made it inertantional...financially would not make sense...also more airlines need to dedicate routes to ian flemming....this is a test run by american to see how it goes why they only are going weds and sat
Hotels are going up but who owns them…? Revenue generated from these are they economically beneficially to the government when most of these so hotels that are up are owned by private individuals to be exact Chinese citizens…?
It’s an international airport to primarily allow folks with money to fly their private jets to Jamaica and not have go through the hassle of long lines to go through customs and immigration and have the long drive to resorts like Golden Eye.
Maybe because of the geological landscape is not large enough to accommodate the boeing 737, 757,767, and only is enough to accommodate the American Eagle which is a bit step. You not thinking technical. Its the geological landscape.
