    Just FYI, as far as every studio I've worked in, specifically for animation tests, DO NOT TURN STUFF IN EARLY just to look fast!!! Unless it's f***ing amazing already, you should utilize the time they gave you to do your best work. If it's fast and just okay, that's not indicative of your skill level, just your speed. The time they gave is how long they expect good work to take. Just my 2 cents. Speed is not as useful or impressive as skill. It's important to be able to deliver on time, but for a test, focus on your best effort. Never turn a test in late though.

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  3 ปีที่แล้ว +25

      I agree. Skill is more important than speed. But i always turn in my best work early. Some artists will insist that they just need more time, then blow the deadline.,

      @@TrentKaniuga Totally understand. I just wanted to share a perspective from another art department. I've seen candidates blow through their tests in half the time we gave, and turn in something functional but half finished. I love what you said about reading directions too. So many people don't follow the directions!

      I agree, I feel like he meant like do not wait last minute and maybe turn it in like 10-15% before the deadline. Not the exact hour it was assigned.

      Was about to write the same. The studio that once accepted me as an intern told me that it was crucial that I really made use of the given time limit during the test. They also sent demanding tasks that were not meant to be done within the given timeline, they especially want to see how applicants would adapt to this challenge and if you ask the right questions to proceed in the right direction. The approach and demand can vary from recruiter to recruiter.

      Never ask if you can ask a question. Just ask the question! I also wish you would have been more specific. But I tried to cover most of the questions that I get about art tests into one video.

    • @Valentina-ee8tb
      @Valentina-ee8tb 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@TrentKaniuga I can add something more specific here. Apart from situations where I did feel the anxiety and caved in (which you mentioned) I feel like sometimes I only succeeded in a part of the test based on the company's feedback. For a concept artist role for example I did very well in the concept part of the test but quite poorly when it came to the marketing part of the concept (which I didn't expect but they were a small studio and needed that too). In that case I simply tried to render it without using the photobashing, something I was told I had to do once I managed to chat with the art director ( I always try and keep a contact even tho the test didn't work out). In another instance I wasn't picked just because someone else had more experience than me but they loved my work according to them. I just feel it's a lucky wheel and I just hope I won't burn out with keeping trying.

    Failed tests aren't always a waste of time as they typically won't test you for IP's that are a secret; it'll either be made up or for older content meaning you can usually post it up after you heard their decision. Its easy to procrastinate for personal work, but this forces you to finish something quickly - and hey presto; you have a portfolio piece as a bi product.
    Its also amazing how you pay people for tests, here in the UK - that's completely unheard of.

    I have heard many sides of the argument, but this is the first time I saw a professional artist saying they should not be paying you for the art test. It is definitely a double edge sword. Even crappy mobile game companies offer paid tests. It depends. If you think about it, you have a full time job and they ask you to spend a day or two on their art test. Even if you get paid15$ an hour, that is like 240$ if you work 8 hours for 2 day (let's say you can finish the test during your weekend without any rest ). If you are a professional, then I feel like they should pay you at least some compensation. Obviously if you are new to the industry you do not have that leverage or whatever.
    edit: just saw last 10 sec of the video, it's awesome that you do that

    I've graduated in 2019 and have been applying to jobs since. Art tests also helped me understand what I need to know and learn for a job that I want based on the stuff that I was asked to deliver. And what jobs just aren't for me. I learned that I love to paint splash art/pr types of illustrations and I aced that test. But I still didn't get the job sadly. Although they said to me that mine was one of the best besides one other applicant. That's a huge win in my books lol

    I come from a slightly different field but with similar functions (graphic design) and I never did tests for people that were interested in hiring me, I had a portfolio which showed what I could do and that's that. Another issue with tests is that this is how they fish for ideas and basically suck creativity from people without a minimal pay and since you have no power you can't go after these people even if they do steal from you.

    • @TrentKaniuga
      @TrentKaniuga  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No one is "fishing for ideas" by passing out tests to artists. Those tests seldom get seen by the art team if it's rejected and art directors don't come up with the game ideas.

    Hi trent, thank you for sharing this amazing video! As the theme of this video is a perfect timing, I had bunch of art tests from many studios.. I also asking them for feedbacks and suggestions. But a lot of them never responses, and most of them are good enough to tell me the updates of their positions, such as they already found the right persons. But there are also some of studio, I barely now around couple days ago, they use my art tests for their projects. It's really hurt me so bad to know they are never contacted me again after I finished tests, and using it for their benefits. I want to ask, if it's a correct way if I inform them that they shouldn't uses that art test result for their benefits? Thank you again for this amazing video. In the future I will more cautious about art tests.

    If given the opportunity to participate in an art test for a company, would you say that it would be better for you to photo bash backgrounds and environments into that company's specific style to show that you're capable of pushing out stuff fairly quickly? Or do you think it would impress the Powers That Be at that company more if you did everything by hand and from scratch, showing that you really do understand their style instinctively and can produce it no matter what they have you work on, whether its character, environmental, level design, etc?

      @@TrentKaniuga Sure thing. most of it is great points. ... You just made it more black and white only. Some companies require different personalities, some require leaders, some require generalists, some require molding of an artist. Some companies prefer you to ask lots of questions some just need a person to come in and just get shit done and take a project more brute force to get it out the gate . . It’s a question of adapting to the studio in a lot of cases. I can post more of my thoughts here? If you want me to get more detailed. I’m not expecting you to take what I say much to heart. I just noticed it, and its only my opinion some of this advice wont work depending on what type of company it is and what type of people they are looking for. Because, I’ve been in all these situations and Ive seen it backfire and had to learn to change and adapt to the companies more over time.
      Example: Ive done hundreds of animation tests over my animation career. One test I went ahead and took ownership and asked k the bare minimum. So i could do exactly what you had mentioned, show that i can handle it all with out hand holding.. I got docked, because they wanted to see things a certain way and was hoping Id ask more questions. Show in stages like a real production so they can get an idea of how I communicate take criticism etc They were testing me to ask questions so they don’t have an artist go rogue. Its completely opposite of some points you made.
      Im worried you might get the impression that I think your video is not educational when in-fact it’s very helpful and great you take the time to do this. Im obviously a fan subscriber so i follow your videos when they pop up. I just wanted to chime in for this one. Not many people give back. My point is more that its not clear black and white for all situations and hope that allow for some grey areas in your talks.

    So Trent, I must ask, do you still feel good about promoting Parler and hanging out with far-right extremists, conspiracy theorists and anti-democratic forces?
    Yes yes, I know "It's just free speech man, it's my jazz, free speech man" and all that. But may I every so slightly suggest that it's time to distance yourself from the crowd that is slowly but surely radicalizing you? 🤔
    Nice art tho!
