  • In this video, Jules and I review the Olympus PEN F which is probably the best and most-advanced 35mm half-frame camera ever produced. It comes with a beautiful design, very small form factor, great handling, and solid build quality. Take a look at our review to learn more and see quite some sample photos.
    Equipment used:
    Olympus Pen F with
    40mm f/1.4
    60mm f/1.5
    and 24mm f/2 (with OM adapter) Zuiko lenses.
    Films used:
    Ilford Delta 400
    Ilford FP4+

    Thanks for taking the time to review this camera. A relative has just given me his 1968 Pen F, and three lenses and I can not wait to get started with it. He also gave me a Sekonic-L98 meter without a battery and am on the hunt for a replacement.

    Thank you for making this video. My first camera was a Pax M4 35mm Rangefinder my father bought me when I was 12 years old. At 13 he bought me a Minolta SRT 101b in 1977, this was the newer generation of SRT's with the hot shoe and MC Rokkor lens with the rubber/plastic grip on the lens' focus ring. What a journey, after a 35 year hiatus I am about to build a darkroom at home.

    I am with you on the shutter sound. I have a 35RD (very quiet), an OM1n(satisfyingly quiet) and now a Pen F - shockingly loud! However, after the initial surprise I have got used to this and now it is not a problem. These 3 Olympus masterpieces are so different and all are lovely to use in their own way. I am really warming to the vertical format viewfinder as that is my personal preference for many shots. Along with my XA, XA2 and two OM2's I seem to be coming under the influence of the great designer more and more.

    Most in-depth video on this camera. Thanks especially for the details about adapting your OM lenses. Since the native lenses are so rare and expensive it helps a lot to have info on that adapter.

    I remember when my dad bought his Pen EE-3 in 1984 when I was a child, they called it “a doubling camera” not “a half frame camera”. To point the advantage of number of frames. We used to shoot one roll for 7-8 months :-)

      Back then, A photo we took for new year's, we developed only next November :) 72 frames was a LOT! I still have 800 photos 9x13 (This was the standard print until 8x10 cm was the new standard) - From a trip in summer 1984 to Germany, From Frankfurt down to Munich and Bavaria. Imagine a pile of 9x13 photos... :-)

    As always Max... Love the videos that you guys put out. The thing I don't think you realize, or maybe you do are great composition training. Love what you guys do, don't change anything... Yes, I also like the book reviews.
    I have a lot of Canon FD & FL glass. I think you said that there is perhaps an adapter from the Pen F to Canon, correct?
    Thanks again, I'm now on the lookout for a nice Pen F Half frame!
    Cheers!

      You are more than welcome, your channel is excellent. Incidentally this video reminds me that I have 2 half-frame cameras, both of which I will dust off and use again. Neither were nearly as good as the camera you reviewed here, but still interesting. One is the Olympus Pen EE, a basic fixed focus compact camera. The other is the Yashica Samurai X3.0, which has an integral zoom lens, and a curious design, suggesting that it might be a video camera.
      The appeal of half-frame for me was not the cost-saving aspect, but just the idea of getting a quart into a pint pot, if you know what I mean.

    I have a Pen FT (ie with the meter). Yes, it does take superb pictures and with Adox CMS 20 film, it gives BETTER results than 35mm full frame, using Ilford 50asa film. For anyone interested in half frame, the Canon Dial always surprises. The picture quality is amazingly good, especially when you consider it's a semi-automatic camera, made for "non photographers"... It takes pictures every bit as good as the Olympus if the same focal length is used.
    I also have a Konica SLR. It takes both half frame and full frame. It can do a combination of both formats on a single roll of film. 72 frames means a two weeks holiday can be accommodated on four rolls of film. (Ie nearly 300 exposures). - that's usually more than enough to bore my friends. The Pen F is such a lovely camera to operate. Yes, it's a bit noisy but that sound is very mechanical and I like it, just as a 1990s BMW M3 makes a lot of noise but it's so delectable. Mechanical cameras make mechanical noise. That's one of the things digital cameras can't do.

    I am an enthusiastic user of two Pen FTs, one chrome, one black. To my knowledge there are no - official - black Fs. Good video, however you should maybe have mentioned four of the most outstanding and partially rare and expensive lenses for the system, the 42mm f1.2, the 60mm f1.5, the 70mm f2 and, need for speed stops here, the absolutely fantastic 38mm F3.5 Macro. You mentioned the also rare and sadly expensive 38mm pancake. The lenses are one of the best reasons to buy into the system. Regarding shutter noise, yes, but the camera is so small that it hardly matters. In case of the black FT the camera is the only one I used which appears to be practically invisible to most people even if you hold it very close and directed to them. Continue the good videos and many thanks!

    such a fun and fashionable camera! I have the FT and the shutter is VERY quiet. the only thing I don't like about the camera is that the shutter is placed in a spot where it accidentally gets pressed quite easily. About every 10 shots I lose when to this. (holy moly, I didn't know there was an adapter, my horizons just opened! danke!) PS- what a gorgeous sweater!

  • @randallstewart175

    I bought into this system about 1980 seeking its small size and relatively low weight, thus more portable than a full frame system. I bought an FT version for the internal metering convenience, but I found that the metering was not automatically synchonized to the lenses - slow and hooky. The viewing system on the FT is quite dim, another negative. In the end, the collective body and lenses still used such space as to not be pocketable. After some experience, I found that the smaller size of the half frame format reduced print quality below my personal acceptance level. So, I sold off my Pen FT and lenses and went back to my Nikon FE2.

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for your elaborate comment. I can see why you did that based on your description. For me, the PEN F is most interesting if it is used with just one small lens to keep it as compact as possible. I agree that it cannot replace a full frame system

    • @randallstewart175
      @randallstewart175 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I think now that had I not picked the FT body, I would have responded much more favorably to the Pen F system; probably would have kept it.

    I bought one around 50 years ago but returned it as I couldn’t live with it. The gentleman in the camera shop was very annoyed. I still have two colour slides from the camera. Incidentally I am left eyed too. I have always loved Olympus cameras and I now have 35 SP which to me is the holy grail.

    Maxi how are you doing? I'm pretty blown away by this review, I didn't know such a camera existed. I love Tech from back in the mechanical days so I learned a few things. These lenses got me thinking though. But normal 35mm camera Adapted to micro 4/3 is double the focal length. Do these half frame lenses cast a smaller image Circle which will be better adapted to micro 4/3?

    Thanks for the recommendation:) never even knew half frame cameras existed, until now .. Looking on eBay, seems like you can get a body from around 90-200. You can get a body and a lens from around 200-900. 200 if it's used in good condition, 900 if it's rare and mint. Of course there were some super rare mint ones for over 9, but still. I'm going to shoot for the 300-400 range, thanks once again. And I know we all look forward to more content!!

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Marc Gravel Thanks for your comment and please excuse my late response. No problem or disadvantage. Naturally the lens could cover more than the available film area but this usually results in rather sharp image corners on the half-frame image. But apart from that, it simple works great.

      Thanks for your comment. And yes, I've thought about that as well but then decided against it. Sorry about that. Roughly speaking: The shots where you can see Jules and myself shooting the camera, usually give away which lens we are using (mostly the 24mm with OM adapter, the 40mm in the beginning and the 60mm in the end). And for the additional photographs I used mostly the 40mm when shooting Ilford FP4+, and mostly the 60mm when shooting Ilford Delta 400. Hope this helps a bit. :)

    Hi, many thanks for your review, I just bought a Pen F today after being away from 35mm film for over 15 years, a bit out of sync with current tech. Which scanner do you use/recommend that I scan my finished photos in?

    • @NoosaHeads
      @NoosaHeads ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Use a digital camera mounted on a copy stand with a macro lens and the film illuminated by (preferably) daylight. Take multiple exposures of the film and use a stitching program such as Matthew Brown's Autopano. This way, you can actually get a **better** scan than using a Heidelberg Drum scanner. You'll be astonished at the resolution and dynamic range. In short, using this scanning technique, you'll get results equal to medium format digital photography at a tiny fraction of the cost. What you will be most impressed with is the shadow detail. Use negative film for exposure tolerance and reversal film, (much more technically challenging) for the ultimate results.

    Another great video! How do you guys find the half frame shots to look once enlarged to fit on a computer screen? I'm curious is the appear more grainy and messy than regular 35mm or if they're still acceptable at that size. Very interesting designed little camera! Thanks for continuing to make good content!

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thanks for your comment. We were actually quite surprised by the quality of the shots (and the resolution of the lenses). When shooting ISO 400 film, I would recommend going for a T-grain film (as we did with Ilford Delta 400) but generally the amount of grain is still fine. There's a very interesting blog post by Erik Gould touching this topic which I can highly recommend: www.filmshooterscollective.com/analog-film-photography-blog/olympus-pen-ft-review-my-life-in-half-frame-erik-gould-3-8

    I recently bought a Pen F, you a not on your own using your left eye to focus I do but the advance lever is not a problem for me I have glasses which keeps me away from the lever, on my model the last bit of the second stroke is much stiffer which maybe is why you didn't always wind it on fully, I'm not a street photographer so the shutter noise isn't a problem, it is loud.. I like the shutter release button I would think it was to keep the top of the camera flat. I have just got an Olmpus adapter OM Zuiko to Pen F it was expensive, anything for the series seems to be expensive for that reason I got a cheap lens cap to take out the one with the gothic F stays safely at home. One thing I don't like it's taking ages to take 72 photos !!!!

    I've had 2 FTs & 1 F. All developed bad shutters. The Pen-F shutter worked in warm weather but would jam in the cold.

      That sounds like you need a CLA, means, when they work during the warmth, there's often some gumming in the game, due to aging.

    The greatest and most challenging liberation of halfframe is to create images of 2 corresponding halfframe images standing side by side as one ‚fullframe‘.

    I recently inherited one of these (first generation), I have a question with the lens: its a 38mm zuiko auto-s 1:2,8. When I close the diaph, it doesnt seem to move inside the lens. Diaph will only show his "real" aperture when I press the small "depth of field" button. Otherwise, it would be stock on his max aperture, even if I move the aperture ring. Is it normal? Or should I have the lens cleaned? Thanks you! :-)

    Great video ... as always 😁👍
    One question most of the images look more like 3:2 instead of 4:3. Is that due to my astigmatism 😆🤓 or did you intentionally crop the images or ... ? Frank

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Frank Mueller Thanks for your comment. And no, we didn’t crop a single image. These are straight out of camera. Typical half-frame photos, so a 35mm frame divided by two vertically.

    • @framue
      @framue 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Analog Insights Strange ... maybe it is a video aspect issue. On my iPhone 7 Plus they measure approx 69x46mm which 3:2 and half frame should be 4:3 ... I‘m not complaining, I just try to understand 😜

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The scans of our photos are 3000x4500 pixel. A half-frame negative is 18x24 mm as you can read in the third paragraph here, for instance: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/135_film#Image_format
      The image ratio therefore is 2:3. Maybe you forgot to take the additional spacings under consideration? The images here are definitely regular half-frame shots. :)

    • @analogbug16
      @analogbug16 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I thought they looked closer to 3:2 as well.

    • @kennethdickinson2591
      @kennethdickinson2591 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Analog Insights Maybe I’m not fully understanding how to calculate film format ratios. A full frame 35mm image is 24mmX36mm, which reduces to 2:3, just as does a 6cmX9cm image on medium format. But 18mmX24mm reduced comes to 3:4. I can’t seem to work out the math on how to express 18:24 as 2:3.

    • @GroundhogOZ

      Some lenses are able to cover Full Frame since the original idea was a 24x24 negative but most will vignett heavily.

  • @monodistortion
    @monodistortion 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I noticed most of your photos are in portrait (vertical) orientation. Do you feel the camera influences you to shoot mostly in that way (the opposite of a normal 35mm camera)?

    • @AnalogInsights
      @AnalogInsights  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Thanks for your comment. Yes, indeed. I originally intended to talk about how the camera affects your photography and lets you see completely different compositions. I also intended to point to Ralph Gibson's current project "Vertical Horizon" which is all about vertical compositions and deliberately eliminating our preconceptions about the golden cut. And, last but not least, I originally also talked about how this camera results in many photographers shooting diptychs or triptychs with it. But, the video became simply too long and boring with all that information in there. Plus, I made a crucial mistake when recording this part and eventually decided to leave it out completely. :)
      To make a long story short: Yes, it affects your photography and may spark quite some creativity in my humble opinion. You should give it a try. :)

    Great review. I was extremely lucky to find a PEN FT at a garage sale--bought it from the original owner for $45 with a lens, but paid $150 to clean it up, testing, and a get a battery converter. Purchased two additional lenses from Japan through eBay. The cons you mention are insignificant IMO, and are offset by the pros. I do find it difficult to understand how the TTL light meter works. The lenses come with the usual f-stop and an index (ie 0 1 2 3 4 5) that matches the f-stops. The light meter indicates a number in my viewfinder but I tested with an external meter and it doesn't match--either it does not work (I was told it was calibrated) or I don't know how to interpret it (highly possible). This beautiful camera was used by W. Eugene Smith (check this website: t.ly/3yXl5).
    QUESTION: Could you provide the link where to find the PEN F--to--OM lens adapter? Thanks.

    • @GroundhogOZ
      @GroundhogOZ 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      When you select the shutter speed you want the ttl-meter gives you the number to select on the aperture ring for a "correct" exposure - or if you want to go the other way you select the aperture and adjust the speed until the meter is pointing to the number you choose on your lens.
      Works for both of my FTs (they were converted to 1.5V) while I have to say the metering on my OM cameras is more precise.
      As for the adapter:
      The "Olympus OM Lens Mount Adapter Pen F" (as well as the other adapters for Exakta, M39, Minotla, Nikon, M42, FD, ...) sometimes can be found on eBay but are quite rare and expensive.
      Since I wasn't willing to pay >100€ for the adapter I bought the native lenses (20mm, 42mm, 70mm, 100mm) which imho look the best with the F/FT/FT.

    My first "real" camera was an Olympus Pen F, purchased in 1966 and succeeded by a Pen FT in 1972. This was my camera joy for thirty-five years as I gradually accumulated lenses and accessories. When the body died (self-timer failed and mirror seized), I was left with an orphaned lens collection. I now shoot with the digital Olympus Pen-F but, with an adaptor, still use the orphaned lenses, shooting mainly in manual mode or aperture priority.

    • @GroundhogOZ
      @GroundhogOZ 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You can add a coldshoe (it is attached to the frame of the viewfinder) and the sync port is on the side - since the shutter is extremely fast it is possible to flash at every shutter speed (like with a leaf shutter).
