I remember it well, we would take off on our bikes in the morning and explore all day, the orchards and farms provided all the snacks on the way, it's was a wonderful place to grow up as a kid, by the mid 70's it was unrecognizable compared to the 50's early 60's, moved out of the Valley 1976 then totally out of Calif in 84, very happy in small town Texas where we have recaptured what life in the valley was....
I moved out to Canoga Park in 1988 to work at Rocketdyne. It was a beautiful town. Aerospace started moving out in a big way in the early 1990's and took a large part of the middle class with it. What filled that void was not so nice which led us to the SFV we have today.
Amazing how many of these houses have been replaced with crummy apartments that look like they were built in the 70's onward. No wonder the valley is in a downward spiral of overcrowdedness and other issues.
Just one block from Woodman and Burbank Blvd. would be Chandler and Woodman where the trolley ran from Van Nuys and Sherman Way to Downtown Los Angeles until 1952.
My grandparents bought a plot on hazeltine and woodman in the 30s and my mom was Born there . She and her sisters would tell us all about the life in the valley at that time. As a small child I could remember growing up there myself in the 60s-70s . Playing on the train tracks and being told, Don't let the hobos and gypsy's get ya!😅 😢 Would love to be back in that simpler time.
I was in Northridge in '94. Crazy times that was! A lot of folks left. I can never leave. This is my home. I have ancestors buried all over this city. It's too expensive everywhere now. Things are just too out of balance. I hope and pray I will always have a roof over my head. So far so good. Love this state!
So. California use to be a beautiful place of orchards, groves, farms, and open fields that would bloom with Yellow Mustard and Sunflowers after the rains. Back then you could walk through a field and an occasional Pheasant or a family of Quail would take to the sky. I wish the major studios had filmed more of the surrounding country side throughout So Calf. before it all changed, they missed a golden opportunity. My hope is that someday some gaming studio will come out with a VR realistic looking simulation of what So Calif. use to look like back in the 20's, 30's, and 40's. Imagine being able to walk, ride a horse, or drive to any City or location the way it use to be before the developers came in and ruined it all. (If the powers that be are reading this... San Fernando was my first home after being born in the Queen of Angels hospital in L.A.! Early 1939! It was amidst olive orchards with no nieghbors in sight! only olive trees and horse corrals. Wonderful early memories! Country living at the best! Just before the start of world war two!! Wish I could turn back the clock and start over!
I love those old cars, but when I see them all I can think about is breather tubes hanging down, carburetors, points and condenser ignition, and so very maintenance intensive.
First clip is northbound Woodman Ave with left turn onto Oxnard St. Second clip looks like Ocean Ave in Santa Monica. Not sure where the third clip is. Fourth clip is likely Sherman Way because of the palm trees and median that still exist today.
I left in 94 after the collapse of the aerospace industry, housing market, and overall economy sent shockwaves through the valley. It had to be rock bottom, or close to it. I went back three years ago, and found it doing a lot better, but the house prices are completely unbelievable. In my view, if you grow up there, it is better to, as the saying goes, see the world. The variety of experiences is worth the risk and hassle of pulling up roots and leaving, not to mention the fact that it is nice to not have to fight the traffic on the 405 freeway.
My mom and dad bought a home in Burbank in 1941 for just under $5000. It started out as a 2 bdrm 1 bath. In 1955 they added another bdrm, den and a 1/2 bath for $5000. In 1971 they remodeled the kitchen for $5000. Earlier this year (2021) I read on Zillow where it was sold for $1,005,000. Fun Fact parts of the valley still don't have sidewalks, it was the weirdest thing moving from the South Bay, I thought only ranches (like Fresno) were like that. But then I saw a guy in a wheelchair with no lower legs try to get off the dirt road and nearly fell off his chair in Van Nuys. Then I learned SFV is still part of LA, so basically parts of LA don't have sidewalk still nearly 100 years later.
Precious moments in time that can never be replaced. Back when LA was a VERY DESIRABLE place to live. Pre-smog, pre-gangs, pre-(so much)traffic congestion. A nicer time for all and for all to enjoy the elements of living in desert chic without most of the bad elements that came later.
