Have you tried using nitinol wire in order to replace the motors and make it more compact while having smoother movements? I'm trying to find inspiration for a project I consider doing sometime later on.
You could create interesting motion by simply having a wire running down the centre with a wave bent into it, then by rotating the wire the leg would move... if you follow.
