It is true that the Byzantine Rite retains the Advent Fast. I had no idea it was connected to Martinmas until now, although I've fasted for several Advents. I had heard that Christmas was originally a Western feast that moved eastward. Doing things without quite knowing why seems to be an ever-present tradition in its own right. Something reminiscent of Chesterton's fence, perhaps.
