    My sling length: 24”-27” from middle of sling or 48”-54” finger loop to release knot.
    Pouch is around 5”
    Length for the main 4strand braid cords is, 2/ 150in cords folded in half to become the finger loops and the main cords for the sling.
    I had trouble finding a good clear video that showed the braiding techniques to make a shepherds sling, from the point of view of the person braiding so I thought I’d make a video from that POV to help out anyone wanting to try and braid there own slings. This is my method for braiding a 4strand split pouch shepherds sling, hope u learn something and enjoyed it. Leave a comment and let me know what u think? Thanks and have a good1. Good luck to all #ancientweapon #primitivetechnology

      @@blindsquirrelRockChucker Thanks for the reply man (didn't see it because TH-cam likes to ban me now and then for supposedly "violating ToS" without telling me why).
      Have a question now. I've used your design for the finger loops (removed the core because it felt a bit too thick on a smaller test-sling) and they feel great, learned the stopper knots and 4 strand braid. Am now down to the pouch... I am unsure how to incorporate the strings into the sling (despite being shown in this video I've tried on the "test sling" and don't quite seem to follow (the two strings I wrap the 5/6 strings over seem to not line up well but rather be a bit on top of one another; is that normal?). This is afaik the only "big" issue I'm not sure about at this point.
      So... Why not braid to the half desired length and then do TWO other stoppers, incorporating the pouch inbetween those? Does that not hold up as well (needs to be incorporated into the sling to last better)? Or does it make for "bad movement"? I've still never slung a single thing; this is the first one I'm making.
      Edit: OR, if this adds too much to the middle of the string, only the first part (the over x4 knot) and not the full stopper knots?

    • @blindsquirrelRockChucker
      @blindsquirrelRockChucker  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      When braiding the main body of the sling u hold the 4 strands in a so 2 move top and bottom and the other 2 move left and right. If u add the 5th strand to between the left side and the top side make 4 movements and then add strand 6 in between the right side and the bottom then make 4 more movements and then go into the pouch. This will lock these pouch strands in. Ur idea with the stopper knot before and after would work too, just not sure how well pouch braid will stay locked in. I also use the extra strands for the pouch to add weight to my release cord. I believe that a heavier release cord helps with the way the sling works. I actually now add 4 additional strands to make the pouch area to increase the weight in there even more. Heavy sling seems to hit harder too. Hope this helps, maybe this would make a good new video subject.

    • @SicketMog
      @SicketMog 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@blindsquirrelRockChucker Cool. My idea is to introduce string 5-6 by just put a clothing pin on the braid, doing the harlequin-looking knot (Turk's knot you called it?), place a tennis ball in between and line up the ends (to measure; maybe taking some small amount of extra string into account for knots; trimming off possible excess), another clothingpin/one of those knots, braid the rest and finish with just weaving the pouch last then melt/glue to hopefully make it hold up. Figure this is 1. easier 2. easier to replace just the pouch if it breaks (since it's not incorporated into the main braid itself) but don't know if it holds up to the stress. Bad idea? A lot of stress put on the pouch (as opposed to the end where I thought the majority of stress would go)? Again I have never slung a single thing (so far) and am bad at physics. Was thinking "just" the diamond knot to make it smoother on both ends (considering the pouch weave should stop them from unraveling). Didn't even think of making the pouch heavier. May have to consider a full knot on both ends then.
      Ah so heavier release cord... The double knot makes sense in that case (this seemingly goes against the balearic slings where they get slimmer towards the end). Then could maybe just add knots/weight onto it after the fact (with glue as well to make it hold up better) perhaps? Weighing that option vs possibly coming around harder after release (getting whipped in the face wouldn't be fun).
      Also (I'm sure you know of these) there are cheap metal "embellishments" one can buy to put around single strands. Maybe something to consider (would look cool too; maybe the weight isn't enough)?
      Read another commenter somewhere talking about an afghan kid who put a ball-knot on the end of his sling and was accurate so heavy end may be good (?). Just a commenter though; no video proof of that. Also to provide some feedback I couldn't follow your instruction on the full stopper knot, just the first part, even with the different colors so had to go to another video for that. Holding the thumb on the next string over and shifting makes it easier to follow.
      Yeah I'm sure it'd make a good video subject. Thanks again for your uploads; while I'm taking in feedback from all over the place rn, more input doesn't hurt, I am very happy with the way the adjustable finger knots turned out. 👍
      Edit: oh another small upside to how I'm considering making the pouch is that it's impossible to match the braid strings wrong with a knot before/after. They will lay perfectly flush. That's a small upside at least.
      Edit 2: just had my first test sling using a tennis ball (with an unbraided pouch/end cord) and it really feels amazing and natural. Ball fell through first time though (guess this is why people put cross strings in between), so the thought then hit me to maybe use a couple of polishing cloths on it to make the pouch solid. This a good or bad idea? If bad/good any reason why? I figure being able to sling smaller things (even multiple rocks shotgun style) vs the cloth not holding up if holding something with sharp edges.
      Edit 3: now considering opening the pouch knots sticking the extra cords through closing them (against clothing pins), weaving and then finally melt/glue on both ends. Should be perfectly smooth without too much extra strands. The durability of this solution is the question.
      Edit 4: right on. Tried now and the swining motion feels a LOT cleaner with a heavier pouch (wether or not the ammo is heavy). As for how it feels to release dk; still not done and swining in my apartment.
      Now dk what to do. Already braided to take around the size of a tennis ball or slightly larger but am figuring I will throw things smaller than that more often than not (like 5 cm diameter). Do the cross strings over the pouch help with smaller ammo do you know? Or better to correct it immediatley and just braid a smaller pouch from the beginning for my more common ammo (once getting into clay ammo plan to get one of those clamping meatball makers to get consistant round ammo around the 5 cm mark)?
      Sorry for the MANY questions but don't have much more paracord at home to do another one currently, and it takes forever for it to arrive after ordering, so this one will have to last me a while; want it to be good. This is my current progress with a test-weave of the pouch half done: ibb.co/P4PxS9S The two sections are not interwoven at all. Thinking now maybe they should be to hold together better for the smaller/elongated ammo (?). Orange stopper string may make for a good whip-cracker in the end as well.

      Sure it is an extra strand that is laced through the pouch halves the (X and the smile) and then it is tied off at the ends with overhand knots (the eyes). But if u make ur pouch so that it’s ends cover from the equator to equator of a tennis ball (usually 17-18 weaves counted on one of the middle strands) it can throw down to golf ball size ammo with no X on the pouch.

    • @blindsquirrelRockChucker

      I usually start with 2 strand of paracord 140+ inches long folded in half to make the 4strand main body of the sling. I add 2 more strands when moving into the pouch area that r 5-6 foot long. And same for the finger loop it takes about 4ft or of cord. These lengths will make up to a 26” sling when folded and ready to throw. Hope this helps, good luck and have fun!

    • @blindsquirrelRockChucker

      Add another 24” to main cords, so in stead of 140” go with 164” inch and that should b enough to get the extra 5”. It’s always better to have more cordage to start with
      , u can always trim it off if to long. Once u figure out what works best for u then u can optimize the length of the cords before making. It’s only taken me hundreds of different slings and designs before I settle on this one and it has changed a good bit since the videos refining it more as I continue to learn. Have fun

    • @blindsquirrelRockChucker
      @blindsquirrelRockChucker  6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Typically I use the 550 paracord with 7 inner strands for my slings. The inner strand count is how u can control the weight of a paracord sling. I like a balanced downcord and release cord with extra weight through the pouch area. So I don’t taper out any inner strands I actually add in 2 additional pieces of paracord through the pouch to give extra mass there. I feel that the mass of the sling adds to the overall potential energy transferred to the projectile. I’ve been curious how the 325 and 450 paracord would do, I just haven’t gotten any yet to try.

      To make a 25.5” sling, this is folded in half it is 51” long from fingerloops to release knot, I start with 2strands that r 140” or so long. I make my fingerloop in the middle and then fold in half to start the 4strand braid up to pouch. • @blindsquirrelRockChucker
      @blindsquirrelRockChucker  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@michaelkellogg8575 that’s is all about personal preference. If u r new to slinging a good starting point is to measure from ur wrist to collarbone and us this measurement for the sling folded in half. I found a pouch that is roughly 5” long and or when folded over the tennisball it covers from equator to equator, will work with projectiles from tennis ball down to golfball sizes. The 5th and 6th strands can b added in at anytime along the down cord. This is how u can control weight throughout the sling with the tapering off these cords. I add the 5th cord in 3” before I get to the beginning of the pouch. (Example a 25” sling when folded in half or 50” sling from end to end, I would add strand 5 in after I braided 19” of downcord.) The 6th strand gets added in 4-6 movements after the 5th strand. Then make 4-6 more movements and then begin the pouch. When moving out of the pouch u just drop these extra 2 cords. I usally drop the 6th strand roughly 3-6 inches down the release cord. Then drop the 5th strand anywhere after that one. U can use the length of the extra strands to tune the sling to ur throw. Hope this makes since. Good luck and have fun.

      The 2 main paracords that make up the 4strand braided part, start out at 148inches folded in half to make 4strands 74ish inches long. This will finish out to b somewhere from 25”-27”middle pouch to release knot or 50”-54” release knot to fingerloops.

    Roughly how long should strands 5 & 6 be?

    • @blindsquirrelRockChucker
      @blindsquirrelRockChucker  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Roughly an arm spans, but It all depends how u want the release cord to preform. I use 5&6 to adjust the weight throughout the sling so they can start and stop where ever u would like them to. But on my slings I start them 3” from the beginning of the pouch on fingerloop side and then drop the first one 2” out of the pouch and then drop the other one 5” out of the pouch on the release cord side. this is the beginning of the release cord taper. It’s all personal preference, try a couple of different lengths to c what feels right and throw where u r looking. Sight the target, entering the flow, just let Go.

    I have one question if I wanted to make a 60” sling using this method how much paracord would it use

    • @blindsquirrelRockChucker
      @blindsquirrelRockChucker  ปีที่แล้ว

      I’m not sure never made one that long. R u wanting the sling to b 60” from release knot to finger loop, this makes a 30” sling folded in half. Or do u want it 60” when folded in half? My slings start off 140” long. This then gets folded in half to b braided into he sling. When done my sling measures 25-27” folded in half or 50-54”release knot to finger loops.

      100-200feet would work for making several slings. No for a 30” sling folded u would need to start with 2 strands that were around 15 feet apiece, this makes the main 4strand braid. I add 2 5foot pieces for the pouch weave and 2 extra just for added weight in pouch. These 4 cords get tapered out as I braid down release cord, adjust to our liking.@@UnknownNotFound630

    Your "bonus constrictor knot" is called a clove hitch.

    • @blindsquirrelRockChucker
      @blindsquirrelRockChucker  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Goggle search constrictor knot and u will find instructions on tying the exact knot I use. It is similar to the (clove hitch) but it is its own knot because of the locking part that comes up through the 1 loop and then back under the whole knot locking it together and in place. Go ahead and use ur clove hitch if u like but it will move off the place u set it, it doesn’t lock. How do I know? I was use ing this (clove hitch) with bad success so I found this better knot the Constrictor Knot and it works like a dream. Thanks for the comment

      @@blindsquirrelRockChuckerwhat shrinkage rate are you seeing when you make a sling? I just made my first one following your tutorial, and I saw about almost 75% shrinkage rate (started with 8' lengths, and ended up with a 30" sling).
