    Stefan could be a smurf, who knows, but the playerbase on geoguessr is definitely getting better very rapidly. I'm slightly higher rated than him and I don't think he played too far out of his league.

  • @BohdanMelnychuk
    @BohdanMelnychuk ปีที่แล้ว +5

    The first opponent, Base, here. Just like some of the other commentators I don't think that second guy is a smurf (though I cannot excluse the possibility of course). Now that I am solidly in master's the situation is that unfortunately at least half of the games are against legendary league players like you, sometimes it is someone even higher rated than you are such as Jake. The thing is that you do have to keep it up, and although not consistently (would help not to miss obvious rounds such as that Albania where I went Greece was in retrospect) you would have good games once in a while with some degree of luck, e.g. I remember winning against someone from top-10 once recentish.
    The match making is actually quite crazy, because yesterday besides matching against you I also on the other hand matched with some silver league players for whom it was like the 2nd duel ever and who were truly new - guessing Venezuela and stuff - I really wish there was some way to, perhaps like a toggle, match only against people of more or less the same elo, as it is quite frustrating for both parties when such a huge gap happens (you either feel like you don't know anything or on the other hand you almost don't want to discourage the person who just joined by guessing too well).

  • @wheels405

    I think the thing with moving is that youre guessing slower due to looking for signs. Most of the time you already know the right region but youre looking for signs to give you confirmation which gives your opponents time to look for signs also, so that they can make a good region guess too. Without moving you wouldve guessed faster and your opponents werent able to look for signs. Anyway, keep going!

    I don't understand why people use smurfs in Geoguessr when the matchmaking is so loose. It makes much more sense in games where you can get to an Elo where you have trouble finding games.

    • @matta5749
      @matta5749 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Yeah it's pretty obnoxious IMO because when your skill level is clearly way beyond your Elo and profile border people are naturally going to think you could be a cheater, which causes unnecessary doubt and paranoia that could have easily been avoided by using only one account. I dont think the Stefan Tomic guy was a smurf though because his border pretty much matched his Elo. Probably just played well and got locations he knew. People way underestimate the amount of luck involved in individual duels. The biggest difference between good players and the best players is just consistency. A 900 rated player can keep up with a top player for 10 rounds in a row and then get the wrong continent or something.

      Geoguessr is just one of those games where you can learn a lot of knowledge just playing single player or watching TH-cam and never actually touching duels. It might be his main account but just not a duels player. If it is a smurf then yea I don't really understand the point unless he just feels good smashing lower rated players.

    21:43 The company name on the red building did actually include the name of the city, Skänninge, which is between Motala and Mjölby, but it is small enough that I would not expect anybody from outside to know it. It is quite common in Sweden for a company to include the city name in the company name if they are a bit niche and want to establish themselves as The One company that does that thing in their town. I have seen Betongborrning i Göteborg AB, which just means "concrete drilling in Gothenburg Inc" and if anybody googles for that they will be among the top hits.

    Hey, I wanted to provide some well-meant perspective on that game during which you were wondering whether your opponent was a smurf (at 4:58 - 10:15). I am currently at a rating of 795, and probably could climb up to 900-ish more or less with the skill I have right now (haven't focused on Duels that much). And I guess as a side note, I am from Europe/Finland & have an interest in languages, which helps me quite often when I see signage.
    Round 1: My first thought was Bulgaria, mostly since that's where I've heard that a lot of snow/winter coverage is. I know that's not an exhaustive thing, but I just got that vibe, and honestly was ready to learn from you why you thought it was Hungary, if it would have been there. :D
    Round 2: Wouldn't have been sure whether it was Norway or Sweden, would've probably gone near Oslo and the border of the two.
    Round 3: Actually, for some reason, my first thought was something totally off (Japan :'D), but after moving for 10 seconds I believe I would've plonked it somewhere in the mountains of France or Spain.
    Round 4: Initial vibe was somewhere in the Balkans or Greece etc., with the sign you saw I would've recognized the language to be Albanian.
    Round 5: Knew that it was somewhere in southeast Asia just by vibes, and with the Malaysian flag and the sign I would've gotten the country. Wouldn't have remembered any regional metas.
    Round 6: Nothing else to say about that than I recognize the Malta stonewalls after missing them a couple of times while playing A Community World / A Diverse World. :'D
    Round 7: This is where it's a 60/40 chance for me to be too far away, since distinguishing Jordan & Qatar & UAE is a little bit tough for me. Might've still stayed alive even when going a few hundred kilometers away, might've gotten the city.
    Round 8: Don't think I would've gotten the exact city, but the language definitely would have put me in Slovenia or Croatia, and at worst in Slovakia or so. Most likely surviving the round, unless I'm already at only 200 hp or something.
    Round 9: My vibe was somewhere in the dry parts of Argentina or Chile, difficult to predict whether I would've been close enough to survive the exact Santiago guess, but probably against a guess farther away, I would've survived, 75% sure.
    So yeah, I think it really varies sometimes just based on the rounds that you get, and your pre-existing background and knowledge that might not even be from anything Geoguessr-related. This guy was also a bit higher on the ratings than me, so it'd make sense for him to e.g. recognize 1-2 of the rounds I didn't immediately recognize / guess a bit faster than me. And also, it's very possible that the skill required for certain ratings would be increasing continuously, so at the time you were at 900 rating, the requirements were quite different. Anyway, I want this to come across as a view-broadening and friendly thing, not trying to defend the other player if they actually were a smurf. Love following this series and learning something new every time! And wishing you luck on the next duels! :)

    Highly doubt that was a smurf. There's little to zero reasons to smurf in geoguessr and i am lower rated than him and could pick every country in that round instantly. Its not like his region guessing was insane either. Its not a conspiracy or a cheater every time you get outplayed

    In my opinion you take too long to guess when you already know the region. You’re so quick at that, I’d suggest you use that more often. You give your opponent a lot of time to look for clues, while you already now the region. Either way, I love this series!
