3:49 *Graceburn Bridge - How the Shire killed Grand Hotel potatoes.*
During construction of the Graceburn bridge it was necessary to keep the bed of the Graceburn dry. To do this, the shire diverted the water down an old watercourse depression via a cutting.
A heavy downpour of rain saw the occurrence of a flash flood causing the diversion to overflow into Alexander Constantine’s large vegetable garden. Constantine was the owner of the Grand Hotel and sued the Shire Council for £200 (equivalent in 2023 to $16000) for loss of 1½ acres of potatoes.
The Shire initially contested the suit, but after a convincing argument by the prosecutor, accepted responsibility.
The judge deemed that the valuation of £200 was a bit high and awarded damages of £75 (2023 value $6000) to Constantine.

27 June 1887. Michael Sweeney died from injuries sustained by a dynamite blast which prematurely exploded while he was tamping down the explosives with an iron rod.
7 January 1888. John Palmer sustained a fractured skull when a portion of the tunnel excavation collapsed on him. He later died from his injury.
31 March 1888. Two men named Moore & Sullivan were injured when their drill struck a dynamite cartridge.
25 July 1888. Thomas Brown fell from a scaffolding, severely injuring his head.
27 February 1903. A brown paper bag containing a deceased newly born infant boy was found laying in the tunnel. A young woman later confessed to giving birth to the child which was stillborn. She threw it from the train as it passed through the tunnel. After spending two months in custody, the judge deemed that she had been sufficiently punished for her crime of concealment of birth. The young woman was released immediately after the sentencing hearing.
