Although it is set mainly in the year 1858 the opening sequence takes place on the 16th of April 1879 at the time of the death of Bernadette in Nevers. She is lying in state at the convent surrounded by a chaplain and a small group of nuns . The chaplain and the nuns are praying for Bernadette. The narrator who enters is not part of the scene.
