  • One of my favorite scenes in the 1988 film clean and sober, fantastic scene. I will upload the bits with M. Emmet Walsh soon as he is the heart of the film.

    This was THE movie Michael Keaton should have won an Oscar for! Subject is not even outdated...just as powerful today as it was in the 80's!

      Totally agree!!! At least it was his performance in this film that got him the the role as Batman.

      He didn't get an Oscar nomination for this--but he won the National Society of Film Critics Award for this and Beetlejuice. They saw the magic that was Keaton.

    My father showed me this movie when I was in college. I loved Michael Keaton but hadn’t heard of the movie back then. So he put it on for us and I still love it to this day. What a good movie. So underrated. This is a multi-faceted performance but it’s always great to see Keaton going nuts. I love this scene in particular because of it. Haha.

    Looking at the Oscar noms for Best Actor for the year of 1988, Michael Keaton could have (and should have) easily been among the 5 nominees. He was absolutely *not* gonna beat Dustin Hoffman in Rain Man, but Michael most definitely should have at least been nominated for "Clean and Sober".

    how come he did not win a academy award for this

    • @abegarfield7031
      @abegarfield7031 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It's a pain just getting involved with award ceremonies.
      It's quite political and a lot of stuff wouldn't be nominated because of the subject
      and sometimes just how the subject might be misinterpreted,
      in this case it would be drugs, addiction ect.
      Even though it's about real issues and trying to kick drugs,
      it's still too taboo for the academy.
      The mere suggestion of drugs would be considered too much.

    • @abegarfield7031
      @abegarfield7031 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      ....there's also the aesthetics.
      Everyone looks a bit worn down and scuzzy.
      The academy would much rather nominate a film where the cast look their best.
      There's not many award winning movies
      (smaller awards from film festivals, maybe)
      where The main cast look kinda dirty and are wearing sweat pants and T-shirts.

    This is, without question of hesitation, some of the finest acting by one Michael Keaton. At first, I didn't get what was going here. The set-up for this scene or what the hell Keaton was saying. With the sound and him screaming... But I guess it's a nice little teaser. I'm tempted to see this picture.
    Wait, what's going on? Craig's booting him 'cause he found out about the embezzlement, he's on the run, that the program is harboring a fugitive? All that jazz?

    • @abegarfield7031
      @abegarfield7031 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's because he's not taking the programme seriously
      (He doesn't want to be there)
      and he's quite condescending towards the other
      clients/inmates/residents
      (help me out here. What's the word I'm looking for?)
      which isn't helping their sobriety.
      He was disruptive since he arrived.
      Using the phone in Craig's office without permission was just the last straw.

    @abuseforapie It actually is a disease. Just because you don't like it being called that doesn't the fact. It isn't called addictive personality, it's called addictive substance. I know your comment is ignorant but I think I should put this out there anyway. A disease is a quality, habit, or disposition regarded as adversely affecting a person or group of people. Like for example, phobias are diseases, not just a "lack of control and discipline."

    @hardcorenate123456 I totally thought Keaton gave the best performance of 1988. The Academy just tends to go for certain types of roles/films too much for my taste (biopics, characters with disabilities). I actually think drama in general is overrated, but this film is a rare exception for me. Very realistic.

    @deliciousmorton Agreed. That's what meetings do for us. But it's not a weekend seminary. That's why we all have to face the fact we have to be there forever, because we addicts tend to forget easily and we can fall again into the same behavior patterns again of we don't give any maintenance to our problem. Some people with years and years of recovery can fall again. It is a behavior to take one or two beers but after that it's not only your mind, it's your organism screaming for another one.

    And still yes, the brain can get sick, it gets poisoned by drugs and alcohol as much as the liver is. The response is psychological, but the effect in the body is real. A lot of us happen to be intelligent and we understand scientists and investigators. The problem is they don't seem to understand us. They don't seem to get that addiction affects a human being way beyond the physical, psychological level, that it's not about stopping there has to be a real inner change beyond discipline

    @deliciousmorton I already made my homework, thank you. And I understand and respect your position. Desease is just a word, so lets skip it. All addicts suffer from obsesive-compulsive disorder and have an egocentric vision of life. You can be addict to casinos, no drugs but its the same. Discipline don't work for us in the first phases of recovery, just the truthful desire to get rid of the problem. And the change has to come from inside. Pills, hypnosis, nothing will work.
