When you were a kid you couldn’t comprehend how Charlie Brown was depressed during the holidays. But when you grow old you understand and feel the same way.
Seriously, Donnie? You can't imagine children not happy at Christmas? I wasn't in a happy life. Not trying to be insulting, really not, but you're a bit of the problem. People who can't imagine anything outside their own experience. And truth, I think that's why a lot related to Charlie Brown. Many of us felt, contrary to opinion, we were at the bottom of a pecking order with no voice yet to defend ourselves.
We are ultimately the sum total of our own experiences. Unless you have a traumatic childhood, Christmas tends to be this magical self-centered holiday. As you get older, you gain more expansive knowledge of the world, its tragedies etc and you realize it’s no longer about you. The only choice is to try and live for others. But if those others are not there (or dead) them there’s a lot less to feel joy for, especially around the holidays.
I hear you. Christmas has never been the same since my grandmother passed all those years ago. I try and make if fun for my kid, but it’s a different holiday now. I don’t feel what I’m supposed to feel anymore.
RIP to Jerry Granelli, the drummer on this soundtrack who died July 20th, 2021. Jerry ended up living, in all places, my city of Halifax, Nova Scotia. He received few accolades for his work on this album, but his body of work is lovingly appreciated by so many across the world. It's amazing Jerry ended up in the small city of Halifax, where he worked, played and entertained for so many years until his death. He was a founder of Creative Music Workshop here in Halifax, a summer program that has been an institution of the jazz community in Halifax for over 25 years. He gave so much to his adopted city, and being able to see him perform both Charlie Brown Christmas and his other work was a privilege I will absolutely never forget. Thank you Jerry for being generous enough to share your songs with us. I can't speak for him, but I feel like he would appreciate this version. Thanks so much.
