@@Producelikeapro Yes, I agree, very nice and humble to his fans and I believe to others too. I bought his book "Late, late at night". I remember he was on a Swedish television show, and "Totte" who interviewed Rick had an assistant who came in to the interview in front of rick with a dog in a leash, and a paper bag... She said to Rick "it's..ehm...well... dog... doggy bag" in a funny way, and Rick pointed at the bag and said "Is that dog shit" and smiled.. haha.... Such a funny moment... Ask Rick about that if you ever interview him, haha..

I randomly came across a video called “Best of Buck Dharma” on TH-cam a few years back and the solos absolutely blew me away. Cool interview, he seems a decent guy 👍

Buck walked into my room out of nowhere with his guitar the first night of engineering school and we wound up singing oldies all night. Happy to say that “the friendship remains” some 58 years later!
Just saw BOC last night and Bucks birthday was the night before. 75 years old and setting the room on fire with his playing. May he live forever!

I'm so glad you did this interview. I really don't think Buck Dharma gets nearly enough praise for his playing, writing and singing. Whether it's Last Days of May, Reaper, Flaming Telepaths or so many others- the riffs and searing guitar solos are an absolute inspiration. So genuine and down to earth too (as all members of BOC seem to be). He makes it look so effortless on stage too! Hoping I can see them again in London before they call it a day.

Have seen BOC a couple of times, the most recent being last month in Bakersfield, CA at the Kern County Fair. Buck and co kicked ass. Thanks', Donald/Buck for once again playing a terrific show. 👍 Rock on!
Rock critic's book I'm reading says they were one of the best concert bands in the 70's. (He actually says THE best live band back then. But c'mon. He surely didn't mean they were better live than The Stones or Zeppelin or Skynerd or Grand Funk or Foghat or J. Geils. I never thought of them that way. I used to live in Bakersfield. Is the VIP Lounge still there? My roommate bartended at bar near Oildale in the mid '90s. Where do you live over there? I lived in those condos by CSUB. Right next to the soccer field. I was a student there. You go to the bluffs with your wife. Or not so much anymore. @@johnsrous1616

Buck will always be my favorite guitarist and his vocals are perfect for Blue Oyster Cult. In my opinion they are the best hard rock band to this day.

I love the first BOC album. It never gets old for me. I saw these guys for the first and only time in 1972, when they were the opening band for Alice Cooper.
I do too and Secret Treaties as well! Do you remember much of that show with them opening for A.C.? I know that's over 50 years ago but man I'm so jealous!
I listen to the first more than Secret Treaties. I find it smoother.
Buck is such a nice guy. No Ego whatsoever. Just a guy who loves music and playing. Was a pleasure to see Blue Oyster Cult in Leicester a couple of weeks ago. Their legacy will last forever 🙏🏻

Maybe a nice guy once you get to know him. Doesn't seem to especially enjoy interviews. Maybe that's the humble part. It's like, "Why would anyone care what I have to say?"
@@Frip36That's pretty common. Look at interviews with Alex Lifeson or Jimi Hendrix, who were both known to be pretty soft-spoken off the stage. None seem to be very comfortable in interview footage. All guitar players, curious enough considering that guitarists are supposed to be on the arrogant side.
Maybe back in the 70's and 80's Alex didn't like interviews. But in the last 20 years he loves them. @@ulfskinn1458

He's got a good solo on Band Aid "We're Stars". You can hear it on TH-cam, but it's got to be the extended 10 minute version. It's subtle compared to the flashy hair metal solos it's mixed with.
Hearing Buck state that the “Cultosaurus Erectus” album was his and the bands favorite was awesome.
It happens to be my favorite of the bands albums. Tracks like “Black blade” “Divine wind” “Deadline” “The Marshall plan” man what a great album. Legendary band! Thanks for this interview.
Totally agree. It’s a fantastic album. Fire of Unknown Origin is prob my #1 and Cultosaurus Erectus is #2 for me! Unknown Tongue is my fave on that album.

I remember in 8th grade riding my bike to another town that had a record store to buy Fire of Unknown Origin on cassette. Just had enough money for the one tape. Got home,put in my poor man’s knock off walkman. Was blown away. Listened to it all the time and then started the record collection from rummage sales and flea markets. One of my favorite all time bands. Saw once at summer fest Milwaukee in the early 90s I think. Was awesome.

I read one critic say BOC was the best live band in their prime. That surprised me. No one talks about them as a great live band.
I remember hearing Godzilla, Burnin' for you, Then Came the Last Days of May, and of course, Don't Fear the Reaper really early in my life because of my Dad. He really is a legend to say to least! Congrats on this interview man!

Buck is insanely underrated BOC has some of the best songs of all time- love how they blended in sci-fi themes into their music; such a cool atmosphere and awesome musicianship

What an amazing, talented and charming man. Saw them last night and to describe them as underrated doesn’t begin to scratch the surface of their catalogue of great songs. They’re all underpinned with great storytelling and a lot of humour.
In the 70's I read that they liked to write songs as jokes, to amuse themselves. Like She's as Beautiful as a Foot. I love their humor so much

1978 opening for Aerosmith. Wore the BOC shirt for years, getting another.
Just saw the band in Alaska a couple months ago (for the fourth time) and it was so awesome! Been a huge fan since I was a kid not just for the music but the imagery and depth of the songs and lyrics. Blue Oyster Cult is everything a rock band should be, thanks for doing this interview.

In my opinion, the ability to improvise is skill every aspiring musician should have. Well done with the interview Buck Dharma is one of my favorites.
Wished they talked more about the early records. Buck is such a unique player/artist. I was fortunate to see them 4-5 times in the early years.

Love BOC and Buck Dharma! I am not a metal head or even a hard rocker but BOC has that crossover appeal that very few bands do. Another band that comes to mind is Queen. I think it is definitely their melodies and harmonies that keeps me engaged as you ay. The fact that they are so eclectic and diverse make them beyond just a "rock" band and plus those conceptual themes are what I think is band's trademark. Whenever I listen to their songs, usually mysterious films comes to mind somewhere in a lonely desert, driving along...

This is a wonderful interview with one of my favorite rock guitarists ever. Here's a little secret for those who don't know, "Buck Dharma" does all of his practicing on his Martin acoustic, rhythms and solos. He only plays his electrics in the studio and onstage. I would've asked him a little bit more about his tour with KISS and the "Black And Blue" tour. There was definitely a lot to talk about. Still, I do love his music and "Buck's Boogie" is one of my top 10 guitar solos. My favorite B.O.C. song is "Veteran Of The Psychic Wars."

Yes! Have always loved that little part so much.
Now I gotta wonder if this influenced Mr Bungle's _Pink Cigarette._ The ending is a similar idea executed differently.
It's a dripping '50s Lynch/Badalamenti swooner in 6/8, but similarly fatalist in mood and lyric, with a fantastic build/climax.
I first saw BOC in late July of '74, and most lately in Feb of '24...nearly 50 years apart and in between we've 'visited' each other about 35 times. Hands down my favorite band. At the last show they hit my trifecta...Then Came the Last Days of May, Astronomy, and E.T.I.
The above are semi-permanent earworms...listen to at least one a day from within the grey matter. Buck...or Donald...whichever you prefer is my favorite guitarist of all time. Not saying he is the BEST...just my favorite. Certainly does not get the respect he deserves. And while studio music from BOC is the bomb, it doesn't hold a candle to their live performances.
In the '70's, being an aviation fanatic, a BOC junkie and an avid scale modeler, I created a diorama of the cover of Secret Treaties in 1/48 scale. It took two ME 262 kits to really trick out the plane and some long, 'smoky' nights to create the guys. Eric's cape was toilet paper painted until it was stiff enough to hold shape, and the skeleton in the cockpit took weeks to re-create in a manner that was believable. Heated sprue (the plastic frames the actual model parts are attached to) to form the arm bones and hours (and three dudes) to ace the actual skull. Lost it somewhere. Tempted to try again, but vision may need boosting 😂

Buck, I love Cultosaurus Erectus too. I still have the album. In high school, I called myself Bultosaurus Erectus. lol. After the interview I'm going to listen to it again. Thanks for releasing music that was unique and thought provoking; different from the FM radio dookie we were usually forced to listen to in Memphis. 👍
Unique and thought provoking is a great way to say it. Besides being so talented musically, they've always been just plain smarter than their contemporaries. Never anything trite or derivative or dumb about BOC - they're the thinking person's hard rock band. Cultosaurus is a great example.
@@ue4058 I agree. In high school I ran with the "intellectual" crowd, or we thought of ourselves that way. lol. We stopped listening to the radio and listened to our RUSH, BOC and Jethro Tull albums mostly, being more sophisticated than the local yokels. 😉Bands like Kansas, Foreigner and STYX were out! I admit I liked The Cars though. Haha

Good interview, loved that he asked Bucky to play some live stuff. Buck's tone is perfect! Sounds like orig recording to me! Wish there was more talk about Cultösaurus and Bucky's solo, Flat Out. Flat Out is one of my favorite records of all time.
The 1st three albums did it for me .they were supposed to be the american black sabbath but luckily for us morphed into something else !

I loved how the band would get together, everybody came in with hot ideas, and then they'd turn to Buck to give them a song or two because he was the guy writing the hit singles. his lack of ego was almost unique in the field of bands with their level of success. - quite liked Symbol Remains. (my first purchase was Fire of Unknown Origin- then ETLive, Tyranny..., and Mirrors. I didn't quite get into Revolution by Night... but have since come back to their full discography.

I agree completely with your statement about BOC being one of the few bands that could blend the progressive and pop smoothly, finding that perfect middle ground that transcends. That's a rare and beautiful thing in itself. Again, great interview.
Great interview!! I saw BOC at Clarkson in February of 1977 when they were really breaking big on Agents of Fortune. Cult brought their entire arena light/laser show to tiyy Walker Arena in Potsdam. Epic show. Mind blowing. I had liked them but was unfamiliar at the time with the first 3 "B&W" albums. They were touring on "Agents" but high light was D&S and Astronomy. Lasers in the eyes, smoke, the whole thing. Watching Don/Buck from up front live was a revelation and I was hooked for the next 4+ decades. I'm from Huntington NY, hung out in Stony Brook a lot, so growing up on LI and attending SUNY Potsdam a few years I feel a deep connection. Bouchards are from Watertown area (Clayton NY), Eric from Queens, Buck from LI. Interviewer nails it. Great Harmonies, Melodies, musicianship, writing and really tough to pin down in a catagory.
Hello Guy: I met Buck 12 years before that 1977 concert as freshmen at Clarkson. Our band “The Travesty” played all the bars and frats in Potsdam and a few in Canton. It’s great “meeting” someone who has experienced the Potsdam thing. Stay cool!
@@bruceabbott4435 Cool. Interestingly enough, the youngest of the Bouchard Brothers was a wrestler from Clayton and lived 3 doors down in my Freshman Dorm. I was just up North last month on a cycling trip and stopped in Potsdam. Walked around what was the Walker Arena where I saw BOC and several other acts. Rode through Alex Bay where the Bouchards played pre BOC as teens. Very cool you got to meet. The Popov Bio of BOC is worth a read. Some interesting anecdotes of how the band eventually got together. One thing I learned is that "Secret Treaties" was written and composed in a rented Cottage on Eatons Neck, Huntington (actually Northport) LI...which I am quite familiar with. And my college Rooie lived off "Four Winds Road" in Setauket. Connections everywhere!!! Still love the band. Buck/Don an incredible talent that is under the radar. Stay cool as well!!

The guys in BOC are great guys, very down to earth and intelligent. I met Eric and Buck several times after shows and got their autographs, which I still have over 25 years on.
My misspent youth party daze going to see BOC at The Long Beach Arena were so exciting. I remember Buck running all over the stage playing all the bands instruments. And the lazer era was so very cool. Well done, Great interview!

Great to see this again. Buck's soloing style has that wild spontaneous energy of guitarists who came up in the 70s (e.g. Iommi, Lifeson). His phrases never sound like stock licks; it's like he's pulling everything out of thin air and it ends up being an unrepeatable moment. What a writer, too. Great interview!

I asked for Bucks autograph at ABC TV in Hollywood on The Rick Dee’s Show. About 1992 I walked into Their Dressing Room. Eric was on the couch & Buck was at his Mirror staring at himself & fixing his hair until it was perfect . And I asked !! I said Hello Sir ! May I have your autograph? And I said. As a Massive Fan. I said. You Rule !!😂. Buck signed my picture and wrote. Mike ! You Rule ! And w/ The Symbol ❤. I was just So Happy. Love BOC Forever

Just found this interview. Many thanks for interviewing Buck, who must be the most underrated guitar player/writer there ever was. Absolutely amazing musician, and a fantastic band.
Highly recommend listening to their more modern albums as well, they are all great. In fact, one of my favorite solos of his is from a song called Stone of Love. He just rips it, and his sound just cuts through so well.

I grew up on Long Island, so BÖC felt sort of like a local band - even though I was, like, 5 when “Reaper” came out! 😅 My first band (much later!) had a stab at covering it, but I wasn’t good enough to do that solo justice. I did finally go back to it and learnt it properly a few years ago (which felt good), but yeah, if you listen to live versions, it’s always a bit different as Buck improvises around the structure. Part of their “jam band” heritage. But I fell like more big rock bands in the ‘70s had some of that vibe, and weren’t afraid to take some improvisational chances in live settings.
BOC is one of the most staggeringly good American Rock bands of all time and I continue to be inspired by their fantastic songs-most of which are not known to the broader public.
I spent a weekend with BOC at Hammersmith Odeon around 76/77 when they were supported by a very new Japan.
BOC were very impressive.
It's been a while since I listened to DFTR and I had forgotten that guitar tone, which reminds me, and maybe only me, of the jazz (?) player Terje Rypdal, not in a copying way but in the sustain or the tone.
Oh... I know musicians hate to be compared... sorry..
I love BÖC and I have ever since I first heard them back in 1977 or so. I had the privilege of seeing them live several times, with the highlight being seeing them in a small club (The Old Waldorf in San Francisco) in 1979. It was a "secret" gig, as they were billed as "Soft White Underbelly" (it pays to know your rock history!).
I saw BOC in 1984. All but Albert were still in the band. Awesome show. I saw them in 2015 (ish), I was front row center, they still were just as good. BOC has always been on of my favorite bands. I will be sorry to see them slow down. Maybe I can make one of the shows when they come back to the US. At the very least I saw them a couple times. Great Interview Warren.

@@steverogers2603 - I realize now that the was is 82, not 81. Aldo Nova “Fantasy” was a current hit at the time and his set was fire, the crowd was into it big time. BOC was at their peak imo, “Veteran of a Thousand Psychic Wars” and “Black Blade” were two of my faves at the time, a very memorable show.
Thank you Don!!! Thank you Warren! Don, I might be one of very few on this: my first exposure to BOC was the video for Take Me Away. I STILL listen to that song because its SO frickin good. It just RAWKS and then I delved deeper into the BOC catalogue.

Great interview. I’ve been a fan of the BOC since I was a little kid in the mid 70s when my older sisters would spin their records. The riff and especially the solo on “reaper” will go on forever. I wish you had a chance though to ask him about the riff and guitar sound of Take Me Away! I’m guessing he was playing through a Fender Twin on it. Just a hunch since he mentioned he used one during his audition with Clive Davis.
An amazing and original rock guitarist. Some of those solos on Secret Treaties are incredible, Dominance and Submission, Cagey Cretins, Subhuman are amazing

(One time I got a really sweet detailed email from Carol Kaye with regards to bass recording and I was too stupid to print it out and that was several computers ago)(I detest name dropping but ya know ... one time me and Carol Kaye ...)
Mr. Roeser is one of the most talented musicians in rock and roll. I am a great admirer of his work.
