  • Tie a Yellow Ribbon Round the Ole Oak Tree - Tony Orlando & Dawn
    On 22nd February, after widespread voter fraud and intimidation in that months snap election, two million people took to the streets across the Philippines as part of the People Power Revolution, also known as the EDSA Revolution, Yellow Revolution or February Revolution. In just three days, the dictatorship which had lasted 20 years was toppled by a coalition of citizens, the clergy and military defectors.
    While there would be small-scale violence in the closing hours, the revolution would, to the surprise of the entire world, be almost entirely non-violent. And lead to the swearing in of Corazon 'Cory' Aquino, the wife of democratic activist and senator Benigno 'Ninoy' Aquino who was murdered three years earlier.
    Fun fact: The song I used was used heavily in the Philippines when Benigno was in exile by supporters welcoming him home, and again during the revolution, when Corazon used the colour yellow and the image of a yellow ribbon in connection with the song to represent a return of democracy, three years after her husbands death.

    • @xavi-kun
      @xavi-kun 2 ปีที่แล้ว +73

      @@AccipiterSmith That is certainly a difficult question to answer. Based on my current understanding, I would argue that the Philippines benefited from Cory’s presidency. Particularly in terms of economy as during the final years of Marcos’s presidency, the Philippines was actually experiencing negative economic growth. However, no administration is perfect and this rings just as much for Cory’s presidency, with events such as the Mendiola Massacre being one of its many blunders. Despite this, it could also be argued that the fact an atrocity such as Mendiola is as widely known as it is because Cory’s rule had also managed to bring back something important: freedom of speech. Because of this freedom, the press were able to report the truth and thus knowledge of the incident is widespread. While Mendiola was a tragedy, bear in mind it was only one incident in her 6 years as President, compared to no less than 12 massacres that occurred between 1981 and 1982 under the Marcos administration that are mostly unknown.

      People Power had a domino effect that inspired other non-violent revolutions such as the Velvet Revolution in Czechoslovakia, which in turn, inspired the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany.

      While the "Edsa people Power Revolution" is magical in a sort of way as it is actually mostly peaceful (mostly is the keyword here) with most people participating in the said Revolution eating, praying, singing, and probably dancing too. He used to tell horror stories of how he and his friends would attend student protests against the Marco's government. He'd tell me how one time he saw police and soldiers would then open fire at crowds to disperse them. He saw people in the crowd just crumple to the ground as others scramble. He said the day the Marco's fled the country was the second greatest moment of his life, rivaled only by my birth. Now the son of bastard that killed protestors is in power.

    Nowadays, the People Power Revolution is looked down upon from the right-wing groups and politicians of Philippine Politics as it cause quite the political turmoil within the 80s and early 90s and the following administration (Cory Administration) didn't addressed the dreaded economic impact of the Marcos Dictatorship until the mid-90s, when the economy started to gradually rise. It wasn't until the early-2010s that we fully recovered from the economic dread caused by the Marcos. I could understand the sentiments of the right-winged people
    But during '86, it must be a phenomenon time for the Philippine populace to revolt against a regime that has hampered national development and siphoned billions of pesos to the Philippine public, and I understand this rhetoric.
    The revolution was not the problem, the one who's leading it (Cory) was the problem. The revolution was needed to topple a despotic leader at the time, but unfortunately, that Marcos was succeeded by a woman who has little understanding and background of Philippine politics and only became popular because she was the wife of the supposed leader of the non-revolutionary movement.
    Perhaps if it was the Senator that was assassinated (Benigno Aquino) or Salvador Laurel, who advocated for a federation and economic reforms, that will lead the movement, perhaps more people will think more positively about the revolution.

      @@teruterubozo I beg to differ, every country's political atmosphere has a mix of ideological alignment. Marcos Sr. is probably a Authoritarian-Right Authoritarian, Benigno Aquino is Centre-Right as well but a bit Libertarian. Actually, most Philippine presidents were Centre-Right. When I say "Centre-Right" they mainly centrist but could also lean a bit towards the right. I think the political atmosphere here in the Philippines is similar to the French, where for the 20th and 21st Century, French politics is mostly focused on the right spectrum of politicians. Meanwhile, Latin America's political alignment leans on the left. Example, Brazil's PT Party we're the majority of Brazil's leadership for the past 20 years.

      Because it was a slowburn. People thought Marcos was a good president at first, until he announced Martial Law. That's where it all started, it slowly planted seeds of anger from the people over time.
      When Filipino senator Benigno Aquino, Jr. got assassinated, that's where the movement started.
      The only reason PH is not having a big event similar to that right now, is none other than fake news. It has corrupted the minds of Filipinos, brainwashing them.
      Any news against the Marcoses will immediately trigger the apologists. Even actual facts, they will *not* accept anything that does not fit their narrative.

    A story my dad told me was that there was a failed counter-revolution from Marcos loyalists. They actually hijacked a Japanese Zero we had in our military surplus and tried to strafe some houses, but then an American jet showed up, so the Zero bugged out pretty quickly.

      Yeah, during the December Coup, the rebel soldiers, some Marcos loyalists mixed in with them, managed to control a couple of T-28 Trojans and S-76 light attack helicopters as some Air Force pilots defected too. While most remember the American intervention coming in with superior air power, there were Filipino pilots that didn't defect to the RAM-SFP, piloted F-5 jets, destroyed the rebel-controlled planes and choppers, and turned the tide in favor of the government troops. The American reinforcements that came later pretty much destroyed whatever morale the rebel soldiers had.
