I was surprised the racism/colorism wasn’t talked about as much, I’ve seen people on Tiktok talk about how they’re not allowed to enter some clubs etc. because they’re foreigners or how unfriendly some can be towards other Asians who are foreigners particularly those with darker skin
So true i still can't get over the interview i heard from one of the cast of the squid game the one who is Filipino he said that one time he rode a bus in korea and the older woman (or is it a guy idk) threw a kimchi on his face and that broke his eye glasses and people inside didn't even help him find his eyeglasses or stood up from him (the older woman threw kimchi on him because he is foreigner) and people on that bus didn't stood up from him because they will be viewed as disrespectful to the elder if they did which is f up because that older woman didn't even respect him that did nothing to her😡
Like black people being denied housing by some landlords. Or elderly Asian people being attacked because they come from certain Asian countries. There is no country that doesn't have racism. It would be better if we worked on ending racism in our own communities, and let Korea work on their issues in this area.
I also saw some Filipino or brown people getting some hate from korean because of their skin color 😡 as much as i love korean drama and kpop i don't want to tolerate what they did to foreigner who is living there because my mom is also living in korea with my korean step dad and one of her manager always make her work harder than the rest of her co worker even though its not her job and even if she cleaned the sink the manager will said that its not clean enough to the point my mom hands got injured because of the cleaning acid 😤 just because my mom is a foreigner doesn't mean they can keep on making her do her co-workers task/work. I'm thankful that her other manager is kind to her and treat her to dinner and take care of her. I wish people in korea will stop hating other people and foreigner because they are foreigner and just because of their skin color because they always just keep it under the rug and ignore this issue i hope some korean yt channel tackle this issue.
I’m a bit disappointed that racism wasn’t mentioned. It’s a huge reason ppl want to leave. There are literally places that have signs saying no foreigners, and even places that take it a step further and specify no black people.
The hugest reason why people leave any country is because of job satisfaction. I am surprised nobody is talking about the absurdity of korean work culture. Always being pressured to do unpaid overtime, aka. slavery, when it's not necessary, but because of workplace pressure it's what you have to do, and only being able to leave once your boss leaves and if you leave before, you get scolded. Being unable to talk back to your boss if he's wrong because it's considered "rude". Forced company dinners even after a long day of work and overtime and you're looked down upon if you don't come. Just work, work, work 24/7 no time for fun, no work/life balance. Sometimes Koreans value work over even their own health and family. J It's extremely detrimental to anyone's mental health and because people have no personal time that's exactly why the birth rate is so low. Not to mention I heard office politics in Korea are a lot more toxic than in other countries.
@@theguy6082 yeah it’s definitely part of it, though i think most people who come to korea aren’t doing business type jobs (unless they are affiliated with their previous one) considering the job market.

@@oppaheimer88 reread my comment… I said there are places where there’s a general rule about no foreigners, which would be an example of xenophobia in Korea. I also said that there are places that target black people specifically (not general foreigners), which is racism. There are signs that blatantly say “no black people”. I’ve literally witnessed non-black foreigners be let in to certain places, but wouldn’t let black people in. I gave examples of both xenophobia and racism. But it’s interesting that you chose to ignore that part of my comment.
You guys should do a part two too and show the discrimination side too. Most youtubers who live in Korea, have spoken the most about this. Refusal in clubs, only getting certain jobs, staring, people not sitting next to foreigners on trains. these make a hugge impact to foreigners in korea, probably a bigger impact than these issues which are quite minor inconviences in retrospect.
It’s because they don’t care. Smh. It’s the racism that keeps me from visiting the country. We already deal with it enough in the states. Sure don’t want to pay to travel and deal with the same mistreatment. And that sucks because I’d love to visit South Korea.

I lived and studied in Korea for 2 years and as a dark skinned filipino, I was treated very poorly by many average Koreans. Other international classmates of mine were too, but luckily, our school life was somewhat peaceful since most of our Korean classmates were kind and accepting. My friend who was black got spat on while we were walking towards school, I got called a prostitute, and jungle monkey, our intelligence was questioned, and we were looked at as if we were lesser beings simply for existing. It's just funny to me that Koreans in general put up a fuss when there's news of asian people getting discriminated against in other countries, but when they have to deal with their own biases and discrimination within their own country, they turn a blind eye to the problem
This is very well said. I'm actively looking for an English teaching position in Sk but I'm only staying for a max of two years. I didn't hear much about discrimination and xenophobia 10 years ago when i first looked into it, but now that more people are speaking out on it, it worries me. This happens in every country, nobody likes to address racism in their own countries, mostly because most people aren't really racist. Here in Argentina we have this kind of racism against people from neighbour countries or asians, and sometimes it goes from just an insult to killing them for being foreigners, but if you ask most people in Argentina they will obviously not agree. There was a case of a Bolivian woman who was pregnant, she was pushed out of a train (trains here in those years didn't have closed doors) by an Argentinian man not before yelling some racist slurs to her, she died and he never faced any charges.
I wonder why they didnt include the real reason alot of people dont like living in there.... the racism, the exclusion, not being able to familiarize yourself with their inner circles and basically having a hard time having a social life with koreans.

The reasons addressed in this video are VERY MINOR compared to actual reasons why as someone who lives here , I struggle to see living on a long term basis ….a part 2 addressing the extreme levels of colorism and racism as well as the adoption of American black culture (but with the erasure of origins) etc… there are so many actual problems this video other than stuff like “people wearing padded jackets)”😒
They're probably not going to address these problems. Korea isn't an immigration nation and for the most part they don't care if foreigners stay or not.
Its about time people are starting to notice how kpop are stealing hiphop culture. I’m not even black but I noticed how many styles and ideas they stole or used for their own benefits. I’m talking about how Jessi’s performance stole Cardi Bs pink gloves, or how Lisa uses the “throne like chair” like nicki minaj does, or even how BTS performed on a roof building after The weeknd performed on the roof for BBMA.
Hmm I wish there was deeper discussion as to the xenophobia and racism foreigners are speaking up and saying they experience in Korea. For example foreigners on a whole not being allowed in some clubs or white foreigners being let in but not black or Latino foreigners, persons not wanting to sit next foreigners and would prefer to stand on the train, the staring, the children’s day controversy they had the other day where only Korean children would be let in free to theme parks or the residency card still saying foreign alien in this day and age etc. The topics covered in the video felt quite superficial

Segregation in some establishments, people hating the colour of their own skin, group think preventing you from wearing certain colours or trying unique styles, gender stereotypes, normalised prevalence of patriarchal ideologies.. all happening in big 2022!
You have to understand that S. Korea was a poor country just 50 years ago, and the country is still largely homogeneous. It'll obviously take time for S. Korea to develop more socially.

Some issues I'd like to see this channel address 1. Mixed kids being treated as outsiders and other Koreans being racist towards them (as a mixed kid myself it was hard as hell * not Korean tho *) 2. Why are foreigners not allowed in clubs 3 . Racism towards other Asians esp if you have darker skin tone & black people (anyone who isn't white) 4. Lots of foreign women have talked about men wanting to sleep with them to brag bout it 💀 5. Why would foreigners who were born n raised in korea with Korean citizenship still be considered an outsider (I can't understand this cause my family is scattered around with different citizenships n they've always been considered apart of their respective countries)
Those people are frogs in the well. I am Korean, but regardless of skin color, I treat people as people. People and people should not discriminate against each other, but should respect each other.🙏🏻 Some clubs don't accept foreigners. They say that foreigners have caused too many accidents in the club that they can't handle, so they don't get it after that.He politely asked for understanding and even interviewed me that he didn't accept it, so it was published in the article. In Korean clubs, there is an entrance cut that cuts at the entrance even if it is the same nationality. Dress codes are often limited to far from clubs or age restrictions. There are cases where age restrictions and clothes that do not fit the club dress code are restricted.
I agree with the beauty standards thing. Being pretty/handsome seems to be valued over personality and talent in South Korea. Attractive people are definitely treated better and get more opportunities, no matter how talented or skilled they actually are/are not.
I have little experience - only 4 days in Seoul - but some of those observations chimed with me. It's certainly much more monocultural and conformist than London. OTOH Korea is a fantastic country whose creativity, industry and innovation have been a real phenomenon of the past 60 years. Hope to stay longer next time!
Yeah, that's the attitude to have. You're the kind of person who will have a meaningful and enlightening experience here because you are respectful. For Koreans, it's all about respect, no matter your colour.
The way I see it, Korea I new to the international community. Yes they have been open for decades. But it is only recently that it's become more and more international. I do wish Koreans would be open to making new friends no matter the age. I think having friends of different age groups give you different perspective in life and generations
I've noticed that in K-pop groups. Like they were training for years together and have maked a good relationship with each other but just considerate "friends" the ones who born in the same year
@@胡利奥 I feel like It's probably the way they adress them considering Korea place importance to the way you adress your elder, that's why it's not unusual for ppl to ask your birth year so they know what to adress you. I'm may be wrong but that's how I view it ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
I thought that the dating and clubbing culture would be mentioned. I do think that they should have added more and talked more about the colourism. Maybe they are going to cover it in another video.
Thanks for using my video 👍🏻 hopefully next time you can talk more about some of the serious issues that foreigners have a hard time living here- like because of racism, xenophobia etc.
To be honest I fell like they never talked about Racism, colorism, and xenophobia which really makes me really disappointed because is the most obvious and notorious things when you talk about the experience of living in Korea as a foreigner and it gets worse if you are poc, like it is a big problem with korean society ( just as any other, but in this case is about korea) and most importantly the topic that I wanted to be recognized was how foreigner women are often targeted and have to go through very bad situations , and how they are seen as an easy target by korean men, because of this women’s situation of being in a complete different country. I have heard enough stories from foreign women living in korea how they had to go through bad situations often involving s3*ual harassment and other things. In the end they really covered pretty much things that are so simple or something more of a cultural shock that actually what has been talking about a lot recently in social media about these bad experiences in Korea and how after being again in a completely different country and society and sometimes alone plus this experiences I just talked about can be overwhelming and completely ruin your whole experience staying in this country, but yeah what I think should be talked in this video mostly was racism/ colorism, xenophobia etc. and how foreign women are seen through this stereotypical way of being “easy”( kind of with the thing that “we are open minded” idk how to explain it) and how they are often harassed. ( sorry for my bad english and also for the long comment)
This wasn't as 'deep' of a video as I thought. We all know what the #1 reason is as to why foreigners want to leave Korea. Racism and xenophobia are topics that need discussion. Hopefully there is a follow up video.
5:16 THIS IS SO TRUE!! "once a foreigner, forever a foreigner". No matter you basically lived or born(immigrants/mixed parent) in Korea, you can't FIT in. You learnt and knew well the language, history, everything or even older than any Korean in Korea, like you actually one of the people that experiencing a historical moment that written in their history book .. but at the end you're just merely foreigner with typical question "where are you from"?. They create a very obvious line between local and foreigner. Simply put, if you're a foreigner, know your place. Tq.
Not surprised they ignored to most important things of why foreigners wouldn’t like Korea. Totally intentional bc most of those videos are about racism lol guess they did their best to edit that out and pretend it doesn’t exist.
Hmmm... I kinda feel they didn't want to include the racism/xenophobia because they don't want to show a bad image of Korea... but again is something that happens around the world and since they're opening up to the world is something they should talk about to make the problem more visible so they can put a solution to it
Mostly it's because it's overblown. If you read the comments they keep talking about clubs and being denied entry. That's not really important. Also for the most part, those clubs have those rules because something went down in the past. You have to remember there's a ton of dumb young kids that goes there to teach English and they do all sorts of stupid hijinx that leads to people thinking of foreigners in the wrong way
I’ve seen harsher ones with important topics such as racism, colourism, inequality, sexism, r*pe... hopefully you show that next time, don’t cover it up, be part of the change.
Also, there was a study done that showed that South Korea is one of the nations that trusts strangers the least. Not just foreigners but KOREAN strangers too, which is important to remember. They’re generally more insular in their social circles and don’t seem to venture out of them as much. So it’s not just cause ur a “foreigner” but you’re a stranger in general.
I honestly think that korea can keep their culture and everything while trying to be more openminded and accepting of differences. I always wondered why koreans get so fascinated with america. And now i can see that they are in awe and feel refreshed to see how mostly openminded and accepting america can be. I hope one day SK can be that way as well. I see japan is somewhat working on their way to being more openminded and accepting of foreigners. But there is still alot to be worked on though.
USA itself isn't that accepting and open minded, look at all the racism in USA. Aside, from such major cities a large of USA can still be very close minded.

@@sambatra6162 why are you trying to argue? Racism is everywhere and that’s a fact, but the U.S is known to be more accepting than other homogeneous/conservative countries with South Korea being one of them. South Korea bases everything on looks…being gay isn’t acceptable and they can’t even marry the opposite gender…pda between couples is considered rude…many citizens bully each other into getting plastic surgery or committing suicide. Ultimately the US is more accepting and diverse being that America is full of people from all around the world and has no specific based race such as Korea. In America a South Korean can walk in public and nobody will stare them down…but a black person can walk in South Korea and be treated like a animal in a petting zoo. There is no argument there…Koreans literally say that Americans are too friendly and open..and if they did half of the things we do in America they would get in trouble or have a ruined reputation.
It is a bit disappointing they didn't mention racism. I once went to a chicken restaurant in Seoul, and was told they didn't have chicken there...as a table was filled with people eating chicken...so we should try the other place. This is one example
Some clubs don't allow most foreigners in (mostly in areas where we have caused problems at clubs because we have a different standard of what is acceptable behavior at the club when we get drunk) but I honestly feel like none of these things were a problem when I lived there. If you want to pass someone just say, "첨시만요" (I think I spelled that wrong but the sounds are right) "cheom-shi-man-yo" and people look back and move aside or make space to get past if possible. This works even better for foreigners because they are usually pleasantly surprised that a foreigner used the correct phase in Korean. Making friends is very easy with an app and then they are excited to introduce you to their old friends especially if you are very open to trying new things and trying to learn the language and culture and discovering new food. I feel that we (especially us Americans) are ethnocentric (even if we didn't mean to be) and tend to judge things like what was mentioned in the video from our cultural perspective when we need to learn to be looking at it from the viewpoint of the culture around us. If you go to a new country you have to adapt to the new culture around you
Some clubs only allow white foreigners but not dark skinned ones, only koreans who living abroad /travel abroad are more friendly , is really difficult adjust of the culture if they still see you as foreigner and avoid you even if you know korean (look the koreans who "dont look korean" they get hard time even if they are koreans to make friends or talk with people ) . We judged that because koreans when they get discriminated abroad make a big fuzz but when they discriminate foreigners or other koreans they act like if they are blind/deaf/and play dumb. In my country when somebody discriminate foreigners we dont try to justify that we pointed out the beahviour of the person . If the culture attack the human rights of the person that is unaceptable
i dont know how it is now but ten years back I was discriminated so damn bad that I quit my studies after 2 months. dont make me start when they knew I was a muslim.. 🤢

The racism in korea is real. They tend to stay in the same group and keep to themselves. Inferiority complex buds and makes them exclude people of not the same race or acceptable to them. The beauty standards were just too much. They don’t even realize it that being different is a gift in itself. Diversity is beautiful. Maybe they not realized but it's truly happened. Korea is homogenous country they never see any diferensial among people. So when they meet new people with different skin color, hairstyle or language they said something bad. They did the same thing even among korean themselves. Hope in the future you can react to foreigners talking about this issue, bc a lot of them do.
Take this with a grain of salt because I haven't been back to Korea in close to a decade. The club thing isn't new, that was going on even when I was there. The issue they had though was the stupid shenanigans the English teachers used to pull that they just banned them for the most part. A lot of expats here talks about it from their experience which is fair but they also leave out the bit where they've caused Koreans to think that foreigners = social delinquents Again, a lot might have changed because when I was there it was mainly young men that went to teach English - not really tourists. And if you understand young men, they do a lot of stupid things, which is amplified more when they're overseas
I’m sorry but this video didn’t even cover the serious issues about South Korea, they are literally sugar coating the whole reason why foreigners don’t want to live in their country.
Please do a part 2 that covers racism, colourism, Korean police bias and how it makes it hard for foreigners to report hate crimes/discrimination. If we are going to have this conversation let’s at least try to have it honestly 😊
Thanks for showing these! There's A LOT more out there with a lot more issues to show them! Keep 'em coming. I understand and appreciate that Korea is still fairly new to trying to be open to multiple cultures and it is new to a lot of the societal norms the rest of the world has had time to cultivate. I tell my mom all the time that Korea is to be applauded for how rapidly they take in and adjust to change especially considering the America is still VERY messed up itself and they've had HUNDREDS of years to improve and this is as far as we've gotten. :'( With that in mind, society cannot address an issue if it remains unknown/hidden. :D - Public domestic abuse and not helping others (Seriously, WTF is up with that! They're always shocked when I stop a man hurting a woman, once even had the nerve to applaud, why didn't THEY help her or even stand WITH ME against him?!) - Racism - Sexism - Colorism even amongst Koreans and other Asians - "Gatekeeping" and nationalism at clubs (only Koreans allowed), enrolling children in schools, bullying on public transportation b/c the Koreans assume the foreigners do not speak or understand Korean - Starring at foreigners for LONG stretches of time, touching them without consent especially us Black women, pulling our hair, touching our hair, trying to rub off our skin color - Purposefully stepping on the backs of foreigners shoes - Poor treatment from employers (there's a current flood of teachers leaving Korea right now due to being mistreated and disrespected by parents/falculty/and haggyojang/chilpan in Korea
I agree that these things happen, but I've never heard of people stepping on the back of shoes. How do you know it happens purposely? (Not meant in an accusatory way)

We must have lived in different Koreas. Didn't have any issues and I'm dark skinned Filipino-American. Didn't see even a remotely violent incident in my entire time there except one shoving match outside of a club, little kids walked around at night alone, and there are cameras everywhere. Can't even imagine how there would be "public abuse"? Definitely not to any extent worth mentioning as an issue. Stationed there for 3 years. Sounds made up tbh. Where do you live?
So many of these comments are hypocrites claiming all koreans are racist 💀 its not a good place for foreigners thats like the biggest point why are you guys making up the most exaggerated comments
I believe its a LOT of trolls on here. They KEEP saying the same things and some are saying the exact same words but various accounts. It is SO so tired. Sheesh. They also miss the ignorance on their own part.
Not being allowed to enter some clubs is normal and its for the good of the foreigner. Foreigners get way more harsh punishment if something happens, and guess what? Clubs are usually filled with drunk people. Also In Korea, when problems arises, it becomes a legal battleground. If there's a problem with a foreigner, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the local police have alot of complicated stuff to fix
I’m glad they touched on the extremely important topic of some people wearing long padding. Especially in such a short video, it’s good to really hone in on the most pressing things. I hope one day people can wear more diverse coats. That will really solve all the problems foreigners have here I think.
The bit about winter clothing, reminded me of when *the Raiders Jacket* became a big deal, in schools. All the kids had to have on and if you didn't get one, you were pretty much shunned.
I like this video, but I agree with most of the comments that there should be a part two going into deeper issues. This really doesn’t even scratch the surface.
If you are going to do an expose on the bad parts about living in Korea, at least hint at some of the worst things about living there, i mean i get that it is heavily censored but this is reaching Chinese censorship standards. A lot of foreigners come to channels like your's because they want a chance to experience the culture maybe even as a prelude to actually living there and so many things are being skipped over as if hidden cameras, rape issues and downright racism can compare to not feeling included due to clique culture. That video of a attempted rape and q man caught on camera trying to follow a woman inside her home, and the several incidents of hidden cameras being found in public bathrooms. (You know that's not normal, right?!) I've never had to worry about stuff like that in my life, being drugged or walking home in the middle of the night, getting into a strangers car or not locking down all your luggage when walking in public sure but having to check for hidden cameras was never something I've been told to do. Don't just glaze over things like that, people do read the news and foreigners who leaves Korea aren't going to stay quiet about it either, it really better to be upfront about it to keep everyone safe.
i would love to visit or maybe even live in south korea, but as a black woman, it sounds kinda scary. i’m fascinated by the korean culture and the people. it’d be a shame for me to be disliked just because i look different. 😢
This must've been the "Intro to" video because those were all mild in comparison. I had a Korean girlfriend and a Korean wife (separate time periods) who didn't believe me when I told them that taxis wouldn't stop for us because I was standing with them, so to prove the point, I stood back away from them until they opened the door, and I would get in with them. The taxi driver would get pissed and start bitching. The first time that I attempted it with my girlfriend, I moved to the taxi too early, and the driver saw me, so he took off while my girlfriend had the door halfway open, but she hadn't started to get in yet. Both of them said that they were ashamed for their country because they never knew that foreigners were treated that way, and Im a white guy. Don't even get me started about the corruption of the Ministry of Justice, especially against foreigners when Koreans are involved, and doubly-so when said Koreans are wealthy.
I appreciate the topic of the video, but it would’ve been more impactful if we get videos by foreigners, especially Black & Brown foreigners, where they talked about racism and xenophobia they’ve experienced when they lived in Korea. It gets a bigger picture as to why they left.
Literally every single thing talked about in this video, I felt while I was living in Korea for two years. Very very true. But at the same time there are also many wonderful things about Korea

Racism, and not being allowed in clubs because of ur skin color SHOULDVE been talked abt more. Also the fact that u can’t defend urself from a citizen has me shocked. Like u can get beaten up but all u can do is report them. Also discrimination. Not anyone sitting next to you on the bus. All sorts of stuff. This is the bare minimum that’s being talked abt.
I really get shocked with the koreans obsession on looks like everytime I noticed that they compliment people on their beauty and not on their talent. i mean i never saw them complimenting someone because of their personality. It's like personality doesn't considered as a trait there. When I was kid I used to heard nagging from old people (not my parents) about my skin colour and all. when I grew up I realised that perfect is not what people believe it to be. I mean who the hell decided that this is better than that Or vice versa. But it broked my heart that in Korea people are judging people on appearance on daily basis and they are not even finding it wrong . Above all they are justifying it openly. I really wanted to visit Korea but after observing things from months I don't want to go. I can't imagine my self living between the people who are judging me in their mind because of my skin colour, clothes, eyes and nose etc
sorry it's not. Who are you or other people to decide which appearance is better, and should be consider as a talent. How will you decide that the particular person is good looking, is there any steps for that?. No, there is nothing like good looking or bad looking people. It's you who have some sort of set image in your mind, and you compare everyone with that image and decide accordingly. I feel sorry for the teenagers there, they must have hard time accepting themselves because of the unnecessary remarks of others. Just accept it that everyone is different from others and every individual is beautiful. Your validation is not needed.
You have to think about it in this context, Korea is a hyper competitive environment. Everyone probably has the same "spec" as you that the leading edge is superficial looks. If you compare that with let's say the labour market in N. America, looks doesn't matter when the average Joe can barely speak another language let alone know basic math or scienc3
Even if I consider your point , then also it doesn't give them right to treat foreigners differently because of their appearance . I can understand if the elders think in that way but not from younger generation . It's disappointing and wrong.
You should let them react where the foreigner were sexually harassed by the people and the authorities didn’t do anything about them. And yes, they all were teachers (the survivors)
I feel so blessed to be born in country like India where there is so much diversity, we have people that look very different from each other, some are white, black, brown, pale yellow and all are beautiful, there's no beauty standard, you're beautiful just the way you are, this generation s obsession with korea just because of kdramas and k-pop is ridiculous, I would never prefer to go in any country with this amount of racism and hate, no offense to anyone!!
@@msterrific it's sad that they get influenced from the delusional things that have shown in kdramas and k-pop, they are unable to know the harsh realities behind it, this kinda obsession is affecting their lives and I feel really bad about it though!
@Lien Ming let her make understand that k-pop and kdramas are not reality, maybe you can try her to convince to study by saying that she will only be able to meet them when she becomes finally independent and that's possible only because of studying, the obsession with these delusional things are unreal and affecting little girl's life, and when they will realise it's late for them.
As an Indian I can say yes we all are pretty Diverse but I don't think we are that great when it comes to racism, not against foreginers but within the Indian community it is prominent, tho it will vary from region to region. As for beauty standars yeah! such things are very complex stuff in our country. Beauty standards are there like fairer skin but we don't have that extreme obession like that in Korea. so it's different.
Agree with the visual standard thing, in my country we have a lot of type of beauty that's why there is not really a beauty standard, if you are good looking then you are good looking, there is nothing like "double eyelid, milk skin, nose, big eye, etc." The diversity of people in my country might be the reason
Beauty standards: I want more Korean women to feel free to say, like Hwasa, I don't fit the standard of beauty? Then I'll make my own. The Korean standard is so limited.
You guys definitely need to do a separate video addressing the racism and colorism in Korea. Self-awareness is the least you guys could do. I understand that you guys want to portray South Korea as a good country but that would be very ignorant. It’s important to educate yourselves and the viewers as well. You don’t want to display a false image to anyone who could possibly want to travel or move to South Korea permanently.

It was very difficult to hear what those interviewed was saying because the Koreans were reacting to their comments while they were talking instead of just listening to what they said then commented at the end. It would have been better had this happened.
Totally agree with other comments, in my own country some Korean restaurants don’t allow “foreigners”, like…? I expected to hear about pretty privilege too.

It doesn't make sense that Koreans don't have individuality. I lived in San Francisco at U.S. for three years, and I thought Koreans were much more unique in their clothes, especially when compared to American men. The reason that they think koreans don't have their personality because they're just all Asians.
These people acting like they have not witnessed racism in their country. These are the type of people who appear as victims to gain views but in reality the actual bullies
I was surprised the racism/colorism wasn’t talked about as much, I’ve seen people on Tiktok talk about how they’re not allowed to enter some clubs etc. because they’re foreigners or how unfriendly some can be towards other Asians who are foreigners particularly those with darker skin
They’re an open channel but there are just certain things I think is way too uncomfortable for them to address. Like an open secret

I would say in the example you provided it's more xenophobia than racism. I, as a Korean-American, was not allowed to enter those places either.
@@oppaheimer88 xenophobia and racism are different but often together. You can have racism without xenophobia, but you can’t have xenophobia without racism

안돼 안돼!!!!

I feel like with regards to social issues, S.Korea is still living in 2004 or something.

Some issues I'd like to see this channel address
1. Mixed kids being treated as outsiders and other Koreans being racist towards them (as a mixed kid myself it was hard as hell * not Korean tho *)
2. Why are foreigners not allowed in clubs
3 . Racism towards other Asians esp if you have darker skin tone & black people (anyone who isn't white)
4. Lots of foreign women have talked about men wanting to sleep with them to brag bout it 💀
5. Why would foreigners who were born n raised in korea with Korean citizenship still be considered an outsider (I can't understand this cause my family is scattered around with different citizenships n they've always been considered apart of their respective countries)
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Totally agree!
Those people are frogs in the well. I am Korean, but regardless of skin color, I treat people as people. People and people should not discriminate against each other, but should respect each other.🙏🏻
Some clubs don't accept foreigners.
This is very unfair

True
Even without racism, it can be conformist and classist as I see from interviews in Korea.

This was much much milder than expected.
I'm not surprised tbh this isn't the first time that they've brushed over the racism thing
Thanks for using my video 👍🏻 hopefully next time you can talk more about some of the serious issues that foreigners have a hard time living here- like because of racism, xenophobia etc.
Went straight to the comments expecting a dumpster fire, was not disappointed.
This hasn’t even touched the surface of what foreigners in S.K have to deal with loool
This wasn't as 'deep' of a video as I thought. We all know what the #1 reason is as to why foreigners want to leave Korea. Racism and xenophobia are topics that need discussion. Hopefully there is a follow up video.
Plz do a Part II & show how dark skinned, disabled, disenfranchised, divorced etc., are treated even within their own Korean families.
You have to remember there's a ton of dumb young kids that goes there to teach English and they do all sorts of stupid hijinx that leads to people thinking of foreigners in the wrong way
Probably hurt them to talk about that yeah, should let them know we're fine with them talking about it and won't judge
I’ve seen harsher ones with important topics such as racism, colourism, inequality, sexism, r*pe... hopefully you show that next time, don’t cover it up, be part of the change.
“Why do you want to leave Korea? The weather is cold😭😭😭” lolllllll this video did no justice to the real reasons…
Also, there was a study done that showed that South Korea is one of the nations that trusts strangers the least. Not just foreigners but KOREAN strangers too, which is important to remember. They’re generally more insular in their social circles and don’t seem to venture out of them as much. So it’s not just cause ur a “foreigner” but you’re a stranger in general.
same with me
I was bullied a lot
my friends didn't gave fuck about me
then started bullying me as well

I honestly think that korea can keep their culture and everything while trying to be more openminded and accepting of differences. I always wondered why koreans get so fascinated with america. And now i can see that they are in awe and feel refreshed to see how mostly openminded and accepting america can be. I hope one day SK can be that way as well. I see japan is somewhat working on their way to being more openminded and accepting of foreigners. But there is still alot to be worked on though.
USA itself isn't that accepting and open minded, look at all the racism in USA. Aside, from such major cities a large of USA can still be very close minded.
@@sambatra6162 The USA is totally different from SK idk why you’re trying to compare it to SK. A lot of ppl in the US are more accepting than South Koreans. The US is very open minded that’s why the ppl here have more individuality than South Koreans.
@@nb9305 there are a lot of close minded people in USA as well, racism is at an all time high, asian elders are harassed on streets, your cops are racist, police brutality, there are states where abortion is illegal, violence against transgender people is way higher in USA.
Why didn’t you guys mention how foreigners aren’t allowed to enter some clubs/restaurants 🤔
That's due to the US military and all the fights that happened over the years. It's not racism idiot
They knew about this but they didn’t want to make a bad impression about Korea
They be so quick to point out other but when it comes to their country they cover things up, disappointing.
As a foreigner living in Korea, it seems impossible to keep friends. I'm the one always contacting the friend through text, calls, etc. If I just decide to stop contacting the person, even if we're otherwise friendly towards each other, I almost always will never hear from that person again. It makes me think they never wanted to be friends to begin with.

The racism in korea is real. They tend to stay in the same group and keep to themselves. Inferiority complex buds and makes them exclude people of not the same race or acceptable to them. The beauty standards were just too much. They don’t even realize it that being different is a gift in itself. Diversity is beautiful. I think Koreans should be more accepting and I hope they grow to embrace differences.

When I travel to Korea I’m gonna have to really do my research before going clubbing (to know if there foreigner friendly).
A lot of expats here talks about it from their experience which is fair but they also leave out the bit where they've caused Koreans to think that foreigners = social delinquents
Again, a lot might have changed because when I was there it was mainly young men that went to teach English - not really tourists. And if you understand young men, they do a lot of stupid things, which is amplified more when they're overseas
Here's a little secret about the clubs. They reject Koreans all the time too. Race is the easy way to reject foreigners.

I tell my mom all the time that Korea is to be applauded for how rapidly they take in and adjust to change especially considering the America is still VERY messed up itself and they've had HUNDREDS of years to improve and this is as far as we've gotten. :'(

I feel like Koreans worry a lot about conformity
I’m glad they touched on the extremely important topic of some people wearing long padding. Especially in such a short video, it’s good to really hone in on the most pressing things. I hope one day people can wear more diverse coats. That will really solve all the problems foreigners have here I think.
The bit about winter clothing, reminded me of when *the Raiders Jacket* became a big deal, in schools.
All the kids had to have on and if you didn't get one, you were pretty much shunned.
I like this video, but I agree with most of the comments that there should be a part two going into deeper issues. This really doesn’t even scratch the surface.
the racism and xenophobia is the main reason.
yeah lack of individualism is one of the biggest thing in korea for sure
The comments were enough for me not to watch this. Thanks, y'all, for saving me the trouble because I would've been annoyed!
Once again a great topic by OSSC. OSSC's contents are always amazing.

I appreciate the topic of the video, but it would’ve been more impactful if we get videos by foreigners, especially Black & Brown foreigners, where they talked about racism and xenophobia they’ve experienced when they lived in Korea. It gets a bigger picture as to why they left.

sorry it's not.
I was so surprised when I heard that Korea was so racist and didn’t hide it.
Surprised the racism wasn't talked about
You should let them react where the foreigner were sexually harassed by the people and the authorities didn’t do anything about them.
And yes, they all were teachers (the survivors)
there's a pretty easy solution if you hate living someplace. leave.
Great. Now lets talk about racism and discrimination
I feel so blessed to be born in country like India where there is so much diversity, we have people that look very different from each other, some are white, black, brown, pale yellow and all are beautiful, there's no beauty standard, you're beautiful just the way you are, this generation s obsession with korea just because of kdramas and k-pop is ridiculous, I would never prefer to go in any country with this amount of racism and hate, no offense to anyone!!
i don’t even think it’s the generations obsession, it’s the kpop fans.
Wait until you get to the USA level :,)
Culture, MIXED cultures, color, tribes, religion, etc from all over the world
As an Indian I can say yes we all are pretty Diverse but I don't think we are that great when it comes to racism, not against foreginers but within the Indian community it is prominent, tho it will vary from region to region.
The Korean standard is so limited.
these problems aren’t make or breaks for people really. there’s bigger problems that are always talked about
You guys definitely need to do a separate video addressing the racism and colorism in Korea. Self-awareness is the least you guys could do. I understand that you guys want to portray South Korea as a good country but that would be very ignorant. It’s important to educate yourselves and the viewers as well. You don’t want to display a false image to anyone who could possibly want to travel or move to South Korea permanently.
Or westerners should stop imposing their world view on others. You're not the center of the world.
@@slee2695 since when were racist and colorist issues a westerner problem 💀 also, I’m Filipino and these issues are also very present in the Philippines. Prejudice has to be addressed in every country, don’t be stupid.
I'm glad to be born in a country like India. Still developing, but at least we have diversity, uniqueness and acceptance (not always, but far better than korea) 😌
foreigners complain about why Korea isn't the country they're from. LOL.
It was very difficult to hear what those interviewed was saying because the Koreans were reacting to their comments while they were talking instead of just listening to what they said then commented at the end. It would have been better had this happened.
They should have made the video longer it looks like they were trying to cover it up
that's because they don't "listen" to the videos, they just read the Korean subtitles
Totally agree with other comments, in my own country some Korean restaurants don’t allow “foreigners”, like…? I expected to hear about pretty privilege too.
I’m not Korean but I have went to Korea with my friends Bcs they are Korean and I’m half Asian and ofc I’m a foreigner and I was not a victim of racism but my friends heard some Koreans talking crab about this middle eastern (I think he was M.E) and they said some messed up Shit.
Koreans do look down on Chinese , indians and other southeast Asians.... Koreans curse a lot on them
It doesn't make sense that Koreans don't have individuality. I lived in San Francisco at U.S. for three years, and I thought Koreans were much more unique in their clothes, especially when compared to American men. The reason that they think koreans don't have their personality because they're just all Asians.
I love to visit Kore for vacation but I'd never want to live there. Europe is just so much better in my opinion.
These people acting like they have not witnessed racism in their country. These are the type of people who appear as victims to gain views but in reality the actual bullies
