Took less than 10 minutes to replace both struts, longest part was removing the plastic grommets and one of the pins had pushed right into the housing. 👏🏻👏🏻👍🏻
Hi Nigel, thanks for your comment. I have not sourced any new caps yet to replace the damaged ones. It’s certainly worth doing is this job and will save you from a large bill at a garage.
Just an update , did strutts today , finally. To remove the lower pin , if you look in the channel there is room to use a stanley knife to shuffle the pin out , worked a treat. Damo 🙂👍
Hi any tips on getting the bottom pin out it will not budge will i have to drill a small hole on the outer casing and push it in and the seal the hole i just cant get holed if the pin with any too Thank fot any help
Hi Terry If you are talking about the plastic grommet it is tricky without damaging it Try picking it with a sharp tool I damaged mine getting them out
Just done it but ordered slightly larger struts, loads better now but had to use bigger pins, not a big deal at all and should last longer than the stock ones.
Rich thank you for giving us all your experiences with this replacement. Having seen your efforts, you have persuaded me to do this myself. Having ordered the 330mm struts, I think it probable that I can expect to also struggle to remove the four end caps, and will damage them. Reminds me of the Hartal door lock "red and green" covers hiding the screws. I ended up drilling a small hole, and then picking the covers out; I expect the caps to be the same. Did you find replacement caps of the same colours please?
Hi Nigel, thanks for the comment. My plan was to sand the damaged caps fill and paint them but I have not got round to doing it yet. They must be available somewhere online I guess
Yes the caps are widely available. The problem I have with these “little jobs” is that the van is stored 20 miles from home. Thus in going to sort something, I need mental discipline to organise tooling and parts, else fail halfway through the task! I had to buy circlip pliers for the door lock, as hadn’t seen my old pair for some time. I don’t lube with multipurpose oil “3 in One” type for locks, and do use graphite fine powder sold by locksmiths. Wear Nitrile gloves as the powder can penetrate skin!
Still damaged grommet I'm afraid ☹️ , not terrible though. Did try the grommet using gaffer tape around fingers to pull it out but to no avail . That is a trick that works on electric socket grommets though 👍 Just couldn't grab the pin with pliers , that's when I looked in the channel and got the knife out.👍 Did notice on another vid that someone mentioned the eye on the strut would unscrew , too late for me by then though 🙂
You had a go yourself and completed it 👍 I filled my grommets with filler just to tidy the holes up I put in. Great we can look this knowledge up online 👍😊
Sadly front screens are laminated so the don't shatter and fall to pieces. Only side windows will do that. You can see the problem in the videos. I don't think this device will help you escape through the front screen - which may be your only option.
My problem was bottom ring join Somehow the pins on both sides had been pushed flush so nothing to get hold of. Unscrewed steel rod and then got top joint off, just hoping the threads on the replacement are the same, fingers crossed
Thanks for the tutorial Rich, just managed to change both struts on our caravan skylight 👌
Well done Jaqui 👍👍
Certainly worth doing and glad my video was of some assistance to you 😊
Thanks for this. Really useful. Changed mine yesterday having watched your video. 👍🍻
Thanks for the kind words Nick
Glad it helped you
Well done 👍
This video made my day! Thanks! I drilled a little hole in the plastic thing, put in a screw and pulled it out.
Well done Kare, good to hear. It’s a great feeling doing your own repair 👍😊
Thank you for adding the size of struts it is a big help.
No problem Fred. Glad the video helped 👍

@@johnbarker3734 Hi John I just did a quick search on Google stating the parts and sizes. They are out there somewhere for sale still I guess.
Great job I’ll now try and do mine 🙂👏👍

Excellent job Clive. Far cheaper than a trip to the dealer 👍
@@RichDavey I Don't use dealers, I do everything myself, so much cheaper and if I get stuck deep in Europe I know the caravan.
@@cliveneilands1449 can’t fault you Clive. It’s all worth having a go. Like you say if you get stuck you can repair yourself
Thanks for the comment. Quite agree my camera work is not it’s best.

Brilliant, gonna crack on with mine now.
You can do it Chris. It’s a well worth while straight forward repair

Can the entire locking catch be removed and replaced?
I would have thought so Stu. Go carefully though
@@RichDavey , Did it today and it was a very simple job, cheers.
@@stucrossland3719 well done Stu. Great achievement 👍
Good man Rich...thanks for that info👍
Thanks Niall. Glad this has helped you 👍
Bailey caravans supply these struts complete with replacement caps for £39.99 EACH, Much cheaper than other parts suppliers.
That’s worth knowing Nigel 👍
Loads on ebay. I bought a pack of two for £9-99. OK they are made in China, but they look well made, sturdy and fitted well.
Had problems getting plugs out, so drilled them and used a screw to get them out
So long as you got them out Geoff. Well done 👍

I can not get the plastic bung out I've made a right mess. 😥
If your having trouble drill the bung out carefully and prise any remaining out.
